Google Keep and Evernote are both excellent tools for capturing new ideas. Whether its notes, pictures, lists, or narration, these two applications can devour almost anything that you want. But the ability to quickly and easily capture your thoughts is key to working at your productive best. And while Evernote has been in the productivity game much longer, its ease of use can often be lacking.
In this video, Scott Friesen gives you a detailed overview of Google Keep. He shows you how the very simple interface allows you to spend more time doing and less time managing your notes.

My favourite feature about Keep is that is you add the location (via reminder), the note will show up as soon as you arrive at the location. So if you add the location of the supermarket for instance, the note will show up on your phone as you arrive in the shop.

I use Google Keep since 2 months for 5 to-do lists, but the lack of structure is a great disadvantage vs. Evernote. There is no web clipping, no folder structure, no editing of notes (no tables, no Bold/Italic/Underlining...), no capturing of conversations (micro), So for a big user of notes Evernote is still better dan Google Keep. And the search engine of Evernote is at least so good as the GK search engine. For me Google Keep is my to-do app (because of the connection with my Google calendar via the reminders). Thanks for your videos.

Totally agree. Google Keep is very embryonic and fails to compare with Evernote in terms of functionality. To-date, Google Keep Chrome extension does not work at all in some browsers, ie Brave and Vivaldi.

I wouldn’t call Google Keep an alternative or a replacement for Evernote. They’re not even really competing products. Evernote is a much more robust repository of digital assets with multiple features for power users. Google Keep, on the other hand, excels at convenience and speed. Even as I watched this video, I noticed Keep really functioned better as a task manager for things you may wish to dispose of in the near future. Also, when trying out Keep, I noticed you can’t have more than one image per note which can hamper power users’ workflow or anyone used to keep copious notes and assets in Evernote. Probably a better side-by-side comparison would be to show whether Keep can be used in the same situations as Evernote, say in an office environment or for a small business. I would venture say that Keep would likely run into a few productivity walls. That’s not to say Keep is inferior by any means. It just means that it’s probably better as an adjunct to your Evernote workflow rather than a replacement product, because really, they fulfill very different needs: convenience versus power. So consider rather your personal needs and choose what integrates into your workflow and maybe even use both for separate tasks.
@Simpletivity

Thanks for your comments, Gary. Yes, I know many people who use both of these apps for their individual strengths. As for your comment about adding images, Keep can certainly have multiple images within a single note.
@tadpoleontheweb
@tadpoleontheweb 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes. You’re right. Either I overlooked that feature or it was added after I had tried it out. All images are pushed to the top of the note and resized accordingly, though, which is probably fine for most Keep users. I like to put images within the body of a note with captions and such. In any case, Keep and Evernote are not really analogous to each other. Keep seems like a great digital sticky note web app for the masses whereas Evernote is more for power users. People just need to know if they want power or convenience.

Evernote restricting free users to two devices was the tipping point for me. That's when I dived into Google Keep. I'm a heavy user of both the web and mobile Android versions, though I didn't know about using the #label thing, thanks for that. Other key reasons to use Keep are location based reminders and scan image to text. The latter works great and has enabled me bin an old all-in-one printer/scanner that I kept around for just this task. But the main reason to use Keep is because it's so quick.

I can't believe no one has mentioned by far the BIGGEST advantage of Google Keep...the ability to do repeating reminders. Evernotes reminders are great but if you want a reminder for a note more than once you'll need to set it again each time it pops up. Google keep allows you to set reminders to repeat daily, weekly. monthly or yearly. I love it for household things like bill payment reminders, or to set out my recycling on Wednesday nights or whatever. I've been an Evernote Premium user for years and will NEVER ditch the app...but I do use Google Keep for quick reminders or ones that I need to repeat. I also like Keep's checkbox function better than evernote so my grocery list also lives in google keep.

One thing you did not mention: voice notes. On my Android version I can add a voice note and it will recognize the words and type them, as well as record the audio for later playback in case there is some question about the transcription. This is not available on the web version, however.

I have been using Evernote for years mostly as a repository for recipes and receipts. We travel most of the time so having my 'cookbook' with me at all times is invaluable. Any important document I need to keep and have available at all times, like eyeglass prescription, regular prescriptions, etc. are stored in evernote. However, their new restrictions are unacceptable. So I am trying Keep. The recipes I plan to make for the coming week get tagged as favorites so they are at the top of the list. I still take pics of Rx or receipts for Keep. I wish Keep would accept pdf files for storage, but I can put them into Docs. I love the quick search capabilities and the tags. Makes finding what I need a breeze.

The learn-ability of Keep is very quick. I tried Evernote and enjoyed it, but my wife doesn't have the patience to learn something new unless it's emotionally exciting (face it, it's computer software - boring). We're already sharing google calender as a family and it was easy to roll into Keep and get her sharing kids bday party ideas, new home lists and quick screen shots that we can go back and reference at anytime. If the tech side of your hippocampus is underdeveloped, go with Keep.

I think that GK could be fast as note taking app, but with Evernote we can do much more. Evernote can recognize text all over images, in it we can collect a lot of different stuff, everything we need (music, video, images, apps, ebooks, webpages, etc.) as we can do with file storage services. Moreover, Notebooks and Tags, together, make more simply (and flexible) to stay organized. In my humble opinion Google Keep and Evernote have different types of users, depending on the needs they have...

No. Evernote, if you go premium, especially, has SO much more functionality. It's integrated with just about any other app or information source. I went on a trip, combining Tripit with Evernote through a send to email, and I wasn't using Gmail. And that was in 2013! Today it's way better. I use it for health organization, work, personal tasks, research work, and yes, grocery lists, too. It makes Christmas so easy, by the way. I just change the year, and uncheck the checkboxes. I even have the tree assembly instructions in that notebook. It's also integrated with S-Notes. (So I hope they can change those batteries and glitches on the Note 7 right quick. It's actually designed to work with Evernote.) And this lack of structure, no notebooks . . . not for me. Thank you for explaining how it works.
@Simpletivity

It's true. Comparing the 2 based on features and integrations alone is simply not a fair fight. But depending on how you use them, more features does not always make the best experience for the user. I prefer Google Keep, like @Simpletivity said more features does mean better. It depends on you as a person. Evernote overwhelms me I couldn't even deal with having more features. If you like everything to be all in one place and you have a lot of things to do and are okay with doing multiple clicks to do a thing Evernote will be great for you. I do prefer the ease of Google Keep, I'm more comfortable with using it in terms of design and UX. And, it's easy for my to go toss in everything I need to do and general thoughts and ideas I need to quickly transfer. At the end of the day it doesn't matter the feature of any of these things, what matter is if you are gonna use it. :) Interesting Xmas list process though. But, I'm here for Google Keep hopefully they don't discontinue it!!!

Of course, you choose the one that works best for you. But Evernote is absolutely wonderful for travel. It hooks into your e-mail (any email), which is hooked into Tripit. And so Tripit is connected to your main travel needs. In addition you can have separate stacks. This means that one stack is a travel blog/diary and it doesn't interfere with the travel logistics. I used to use Ecco Pro back in the day, so using a complex outliner/project planner feels very familiar. On the other hand, for everyday repeating events, Google Now, integrated with the Google app, is best.

Evernote is for people obsessed with staring at their phone. I signed up to use it and the free version was to basic and non functioning that I didnt use it. I actually prefer a small company with my information than a large corporation that already owns half the world's information. So beside all my email, youtube, cookies, advertising metrics, google apps and calendar this is another way to collect and piece together all the information they could ever want on each individual...this is actually very scary if you think about it

For the last year or so I had a "Planner" folder in my Evernote for daily/weekly tasklists, quick ideas, and daily notes on what happened that day. But I have been playing around with Google Keep and I think I am moving this part of my Evernote structure to Google Keep. It is much less cluttered and faster to use - you are right, far fewer clicks. I love the integration with Google Calendar as well. I have loved Evernote - have used it for several years - but it's been getting unwieldy lately (partly my fault). Also Evernote has been lagging lately when I type in a new note, which has been frustrating. I'm a long time user of Evernote premium. I have experienced Google as the 2-edged sword-- if the service is free, then your data is not 100% controlled by you. I pay Evernote so that they can focus on providing me a service rather than selling any portion of my data to advertisers. I use several Google apps, but with caution. Evernote is a straight-forward service that I pay for, just like web connectivity, mobile services, the electricity in my home. Also, if your life is more than random to-do items and phone call reminders, Evernote can handle it all from shopping lists to medical records, owners manuals, receipts, writing. To get the most from it, considering your filing needs and planning how you organize your data pays off. Google Keep sounds great for random data-entry of non-personal information like many to-do's, phone call reminders-- nothing that is personally identifiable. And that sort of use has it's place, too. But I can do that with Evernote as well. Most important feature in a note app? Being able to keep everything you want to keep and being able to find it quickly. Search is the feature.

Great question, John. You highlight a point that we should all keep in mind when selecting a note app: what other tools will I be using with it? If you already use a lot of Microsoft products, it might be best for you to stick with OneNote. Of course, having said that, it never hurts to give something else a try and see how it feels. Thanks for watching!

I LOVE Evernote, having organized my notebooks is fantastic for me. At the moment, I'm taking an online course and the course offers transcripts from the videos as a pdf, and other essentials that I need for it. Can you do this in Keep?
@Simpletivity
@Simpletivity 6 жыл бұрын
Great question, Deirdre. One of the current drawbacks of Keep is that you are limited as to what you can attach to a note. Images are the only supported attachment you can add directly to a note. However, it does integrate seamlessly with Google Drive so you can always link these types of files that way.

Thanks. I have been using Keep for while. It's easy to use unlike OneNote or EverNote, but sometimes I find it lacking. I particularly wished I could change the font size or color or underline or bold text. At the same time I find OneNote for Android cumbersome. With evernote I encountered a frustrating issue: whenever the wifi is sluggish (as in Starbucks) my note gets duplicated every couple of minutes and I get "note conflicts". So I end up reverting to the ever simple Keep.

Thanks for the video. I use both for a while now, being Evernote the primary. I agree that Evernote is not so user friendly, however, the one thing that's stopping me from moving completely to the keep, is the lack of scanning ability of documents. Evernote does it very good. Still one could use another app for that and store it in Google keep. Bottom line? I'm also tired of Evernote. Take care.

One frustration with the web version is that when you scroll through your notes it scrambles the order of things in a very annoying way. Notes jump up and down, back and forth, etc. You can avoid this by choosing a list display, but if you use the sticky note display it is a hot mess.
@Simpletivity
@Simpletivity 7 жыл бұрын
mikethelma I've noticed this as well. But is the shuffling a result of the notes syncing? For example, the initial layout is displayed from the last time you viewed it on that device. But then it quickly syncs and adjusts the notes based on the latest edits. I've noticed something similar on the mobile version of Trello. On a similar note, it looks like Keep just introduced the ability to pin notes to the top.

Google Keep seems to have everything I need and I was glad to find it - but was amazed that it doesn't support uploading PDFs. A major flaw. The workaround is to upload them into a Drive folder and post a link in Keep. How is it possible that Google left this out?
@Simpletivity

Yes, this certainly makes it difficult if you are wanting to attach PDF's directly to your notes. Now that Google has released their updated Calendar, it will be interesting to see what they may have planned ahead for Keep.

@Simpletivity

Thanks for the question, Bob. I'm not sure if we should be any more worried about Google shutting Keep down vs any other app being taken off the market. There is always going to be that risk when buying into a system. Evernote has had some well known financial problems, so I think that risk remains for many users.

I had the same fear but I think Google has finally stopped being childish with Keep. It's tied in strongly with Docs and the new Gmail so I think Keep is safe. I hear you though. Google's like the creative child who throws projects away when bored. But hopefully Keep is one product they'll actually stick with since it's part of the Drive and Docs system.

Watching this in November of 18! Lol and I'm finally dropping Evernote! Not paying and I use my Samsung Galaxy Note 9 (all Notes since 2) retired my iPhone then... but still use all Mac's! So Google Keep for me! Cross platform and free . Just don't like the fact that Apple doesn't want to play nice with others... it's personal preference imo. My Note is a mini computer that I take everywhere! But when I sit down at home. I want to be able to keep on going on my computers! Great vid... even years later! I don't believe there is a limit to the length of the voice recording. What happens is that Keep stops the recording when it identifies a pause. But it would seem that it does often identify these pauses a little too quick and thus ends the recording prematurely. An alternative would be to use the dictation (microphone icon) on your device to transcribe your notes in Keep.

I'm used to Evernote and i hadn't heard about GK until now. Does GK have webpages capture options as evernote? Can GK integrate excel/cloud inside notes or something like? that would be awesome and a reason to jump to. Also combining tags for advanced filtering would be orgasmic and another reason to jump.

Great questions! Keep is limited with it's webpage clipping ability. Currently, it just captures the link and does not let you choose what components you'd like to clip. Similar answer to your question about integration - fairly limited. But combining tags for greater filtering is a fairly easy job in Keep. Thanks for watching.

Yes! I did transfer a whole bunch of my longer Keep notes on one go. But it seems the original Keep notes still existed after, when I was hoping they would automatically delete out of Keep. Being a long-time, heavy user of Evernote, I can't imagine replacing Evernote with Keep. Just watching the demo creating different Keep note types: text, to-do, or image, is a deal-breaker for me. With Evernote I can create a note with text, images, and text, all combined in a single note. Keep is too simplistic for me. I currently have 1200 Evernote notes, and need to organize them hierarchically. Using only Keep labels and search to do this won't work for me.

Unfortunately, there is currently no direct way to import Evernote data to Google Keep. Keep does not yet provide an import option. You can export notes from Evernote as HTML and then manually add them to Google Keep. But this is probably not appealing if you have a large number of notes.

When I used to use the Chrome app to create, edit and delete notes the changes would never sync properly across other devices (Android and iOS app). Deleted notes would constantly reappear no matter how many times deleted and also Bin emptied. Checked items would become 'unchecked', duplicate notes causing an error message and so on. I did a search online to see what's going on and if there are any others experiencing the same thing and I came across a post on another tutorial saying not to use that Chrome app, so I thought I'd give it a try. Since I stopped using it I haven't had anymore problems with sync issues or wanting to headbutt the closest wall.
