Have you taken an online flower farming course that you love?!

Every time this topic comes up, I think of the Good Will Hunting qoute..." You dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a f----n' education you coulda' got for a dollar fifty in late charges at the public library." There are so many great books and KZbin content out there. Combined with online info like Johnny's growers library. IMO, business classes focusing marketing, principles of accounting and operations management are a better return on investment. When it comes down to it, it really depends on type of learner you are. That being said, if money were no object, I would definitely take Elaine Ingrams course if I could.

Thanks for the helpful video! Last year I took the Lisa Mason Ziegler course, and I’m finishing the Floret course. I too really loved the Floret course. I agree with everything you said, and would add that the Floret course gave me a strong glimpse into the mindset of running a flower farm-how topics relate to one another and fit into a grander scheme, and how to think about it as a whole and make decisions. While I’d gotten a lot of tips from free videos, I was struggling to get how it all fit together. I also appreciated how many resources they provided-course book chock full of info, planning tools, a sample yearly plan, etc. The community has also been invaluable to me because I’m outside the USA and have different conditions, and I was able to connect quickly with experienced farmers internationally.

Good perspective Brittney, I have taken several courses from Lisa Mason Ziegler from The Gardner's Workshop. They have been really great and helpful. I do think if I would have taken Lisa's course a year earlier I would have had the confidence to sell earlier as well. I to think it's very valuable to learn from experts in the field because you simply don't know what you don't know. So take a course and focus on that. I love the advice to go back and retake/re-listen to the course. I do that as well, and it's amazing how much more you glean from the same material when you are 1-2 years further down the road from where you started at.

Lisa provides so much value through her free content, I bet her paid content is even better! Glad to hear you had a great experience with it!

I would be extremely cautious taking online courses, especially if the price tag is $1000+. There are many growers getting into teaching now because it is less labour and more profit than growing and selling plants. This is because online courses can be scaled up indefinitely, whereas a growing operation has limits set by nature. I am highly skeptical of farms such as Floret that have switched from production growing as their main form of profit to teaching online. With floret, it seems people are paying to be a part of the club, and feel connected to the owner. Now floret is not all bad, it's just that if you can't afford to take their course it's okay you can still accomplish everything you dream of, the information these courses share can be found in many ways. It may even be beneficial to combine free resources from various farms to realize that there are thousands of ways to farm, and no one way is the right way.

I should add I love to see this video, it's good to talk about how all online courses are not equal. I have taken Jenny Love's wedding course + workshop course, they were a bundle and I paid $600 for both. I feel they were both valuable to the growth of my business. I chose to take them based on my knowledge of Jenny's business, Love n' Fresh FLowers, and her dedications to regenerative farming and sustainability in the industry.

All good points! Thanks for sharing your thoughts + opinions :) I do agree that content creation may be less labor-intensive from a physical perspective, but for argument's sake-- I will say that I believe it's deceivingly more time-intensive than it appears to be at first glance ;) Just speaking to my experience, this simple sit-down style youtube video, for being just 20 minutes long, still took 12+ hours to create when you account for preparation/filming/editing and post-production tasks.... multiple that across an entire course and I can understand the time + effort some creators have in their courses. Glad Jenny Love's courses were helpful- she's such a wealth of information!

Yup yup. Also floret is in zone 7 and farms in the richest soil and most perfect growing conditions. She takes beautiful pictures. It’s the same thing with baby photography. Everyone who learned two tricks in photoshop was trying to sell “courses.”

How do you make a million dollars from your farm? Spend two million dollars. Funny joke k heard today. It’s a lot easier to make money teaching course versus selling flowers. Be careful taking courses from ppl who don’t have a lot of experience. Also if you’re a small beginner farmer be careful taking courses from established farms with many greenhouses employees and automated fertilizer etc. also be careful taking classes form someone who lives in zone 7 and farms in super fertile volcanic soil when you live in zone 5 with crummy soil.

Flower farming courses are 100% NOT worth it at all. Not even remotely close. 1.) All of the info that you need is free on youtube and through Google. 2.) Most of the people that charge for these courses are clueless idiots with very little experience that jumped on the "online course" bandwagon. 3.) Experience is the best course you can get and you can't teach that in an online course.

Also, farming and operating a successful farm business is highly contextual. Copy and pasting doesn't work in farming. Dropping $1500 on information you can find for free that may or may not work your context is a waste. Better off accumulating knowledge from many sources from many contexts and selecting or experimenting what works best in your context. And this can be accomplished with free information, a handful of books and experience.
