I’m finishing up my senior year in counseling psychology for undergrad. Right now, I am an assistant sales manager and saving up for grad school. I’ve been thinking about applying for the school psychology program at my school after graduation. I tried working in a field related to counseling but there’s not much in my area. However, I do a lot of delegating and problem solving with my assistant manager position. I work with a lot of men too because the field I cater to is construction like residential repaint and commercial construction. But I don’t see myself doing this for the rest of my life. I love kids, I have four daughters and homeschooled them. Being in charge of their education made me realize how passionate I am about school just like your interviewee, Simone. Plus, I’m bilingual as well and there’s no school psychologists who look like me. I’m half indigenous and half Mexican. I grew up on the reservation and had to work tirelessly to get where I’m at. Lastly, I love your videos, your channel is my go-to for school psychology. I hope I get accepted into a grad program. I know school psychology is what I’m built to do.

Gap years are definitely worth it especially if you have a goal in mind during that gap year. For example, getting some work experience and/or building a resume. Also, again like you said, getting some experience in the field can help confirm your feelings about your undergrad/potential career or it can also make you realize that you want to do something else.

Yes!! some people use that time to also study for standardized tests or just rest before jumping back into school. There is absolutely nothing wrong with either path!

Thank you so much for this! I'm a recent grad (May 2020) and currently taking a gap year right now! I know what I want to do and I'm planning to apply for graduate school, but I'm always debating whether or not taking a gap year is enough time for me to get experience. One of the things I'm worried about is experience and forgetting how to do "school". LOL

I took three years off and it gave me really good experience and perspective that helped me out in grad school and practicum. Like Sym mentioned in the video, your path is completely up to you and what makes sense for your life! It was honestly fun for me to come back to school and get back on the study grind after a few years

@@TiffanyLee If you had to take out student loans, would you say it was hard paying them off at first when you went into repayment, or was it manageable for you

It's funny that this video came out because I was just talking about this the other day! I don't really know if I want to go to grad school immediately or take a year or two off just yet, but this video definitely helped me out a lot!

yay glad it was helpful! you never really know whether you made the "perfect" decision but it doesn't really matter as long as you're happy and comfortable with your situation

I did the same thing where I applied to just one graduate school directly from undergraduate. I didn’t get in, and I took it as a sign to get more experiences in schools to decide if this was the career path for me. After a year of being a reading interventionist and deciding to apply again, I had my pick of which graduate school to attend.

YESS! Being a reading specialist is an amazing opportunity- I wish I had the knowledge and experience regarding reading because I feel like we barely scraped the surface in class
