Love your videos! I am 61 years old. I had a hair transplant just before my 60th birthday and have been on oral finasteride 1 mg for 2 and 1/2 years and oral minoxidil 1.25 mg for 16 months. I have no side effects and my hair looks better than it has looked in 20+ years!

Great videos guys. Nice to see some American drs promoting a drug that was proven in 2002 but have been too scared, paranoid and uninformed to prescribe it because it wasn’t FDA approved. What a shame for the poor patients who had to miss out simply because of drs insecurities and paranoia. Well done to the Dr Kopelands

@@drkopelman I think you missed the point Dr Kopelman. There are many Dr's in the USA to this day who A) have not heard of dutasteride and B) will NOT dare prescribe it even off label because of their own insecurities and fears. Japan had the foresight and intelligence to approve this agent for the treatment of a barbaric and life compromising condition called "hairloss". Many American Dr's are stuck in the past. I can't tell you the countless stories from patients who tell me their Dr will not prescribe dutasteride. Even Finasteride has proven difficult for them to obtain. Here in Europe we were more forward thinking and knew the benefits years ago. I'm delighted to see you are more modern and up with the times. Well done.

I have been taking 1.25 mg oral minoxidil since November and have been very happy to see a significant regrowth around my hairline and all over my head. I spent a few years of different topical treatments that I had to keep putting on twice every night and then (supposedly) washing out every morning.

@@nannygoatj Wonderful to hear! We always prefer to tell patients to be on oral medication vs topical because it is much easier from a compliance standpoint and oral usually works better for hair stimulation. Regardless is is great to have the option to use topical.

Thanks for the video! I know that dutasteride blocks all three isoforms of 5ar. I've been recently reading that type 1 is also inside hair follicles in the frontal and mid scalp. Have you read research regarding this?
@drkopelman
@drkopelman 7 ай бұрын
Yes! Dutasteride blocks both type 1 and type 2 5 alpha reductase and that’s why it’s considered to be a stronger medication compared to Finasteride to treat hair loss. In our office we usually put patients on Dutasteride because of its ability to be more effective in addressing hair loss.

I took one pill .5 mg of Dutasteride every week and then 1 mg finasteride 4x. Results: My front hairline actually grew back with dutasteride and my hairs got thicker. Prior to Dutasteride, finasteride added hair in my back, but my front hairline was slowly receding. I had no ED issues with finasteride. Side effects: After 6 months of dutasteride, I would get deep acne all my skin. A pimple would form and it would take 3 weeks to go away. I never had this happen before. Normally, pimples would only take a couple of daysm Then I had a boil around my scrotum area form and that took 4 weeks to go away. Although my hair was thicker, my body was covered with pimples and I had a small growth appear on my face. Also, the taste of meat tasted weird and it made me nautious when I ate it. It tasted like iron. All meat tasted like cooked liver. Grss! I think it was because dutasteride my messed up my liver and kidney metabolic processes. At this point, I decided to go only on finasteride and dropped dutasteride. After 6 months, my pimple scars are gone and I can eat meat without this metallic taste in it.

It sounds like you've had good hair regrowth results with both finasteride and dutasteride, especially for your front hairline. Dutasteride is more potent, which likely explains the thicker hair, but the side effects you experienced-severe acne, prolonged healing, and a metallic taste with meat-could be due to how your body metabolized the drug.

I think fear mongering started when people had side effects when they started finasteride without knowing how it works, what are the hormonal changes that resulted after ingestion such as how Finasty would increase E2 . An elevated E2 in normal men itself is a big cause for ED and low libido. Once u get your E2 in range, ED doesnt exist

Everyone experiences hair loss to different degrees as hair loss is genetic. If you don’t have a strong family history on either side of the family then I would say you are more likely to retain more of your hair. If you don’t have hair loss now I would just continue to monitor as you get older and then determine if you need any hair loss medication

@@drkopelman I understand. I really appreciate your response. I took Finasteride for years. I was starting to lose hair again. My hairline is a wreck now and my part is bigger. Scary. I never was able to see through my hairline into my head before 😱😱 when my hair is pushed back. I saw some Drs say they still use Fin and do Dutastride a few times a week combined. Then others say Fin is not needed with it. Do you typically do a daily Dutastride? Do you still use Finasteride at all? I’ll stay on the minoxidil if that helps for sure. I wasn’t happy with the shedding when I started it. So my hairline and part got even more thin. My hair is below shoulders so it got stringy looking in the very front with all the shedding. I pretty much, have all one length hair. I’m on HRT. I get my bloodwork done a few times a year to make sure my hormones are in range. My Testostrone was a bit high. So I’m sure a lot of this is DHT. Ugh. Even on the Fin every single day it was still thinning. Crazy. I take 5 mgs of Fin every day. Seems like a lot compared to what some say they take. I’m scared to back off of it. I assume I can with starting the Dutastride. I def needed a change, I should not have been losing hair still on Fin. Maybe I got immune to it haha. I’m not sure. Does 1mg finasteride cause a shedding phase?
@drkopelman
@drkopelman 3 ай бұрын
It's common for people to experience a temporary shedding phase when starting finasteride, even at the 1mg dose. This shedding is actually a sign that the medication is working, as it stimulates hair follicles to shift from the resting phase into the growth phase. While it can be concerning, this phase typically subsides within a few months, and you should start seeing regrowth after that

@@FatTofu-pu2li If the doctor bills himself as an expert on hair loss and hair restoration if he is balding it is bad optics - i dont expect some physician working at an urgent care treating colds, the flu, high blood pressure, diabetes to know a lot about regrowing hair - your argument shows ignorance

simply put: There are drugs that remove blockages so your hair can grow. BUT , no drugs can re-learn your hair to grow after it has lost this ability.

True. No drugs exist currently to regrow follicles that you no longer have. However there is promising clinical research being done on hair cloning where in the future you’ll be able to stimulate new hair follicle growth from stem cells. This will be very helpful during hair transplants.

Nothing more depressing than going bald. When you are bald, the last thing on your mind is an election issue because most women walk right past you.

If you're really serious about regrowing your hair this is what to do: oral minoxidil 5mg daily, oral finasteride 5mg daily, oral spironolactone 200 mg daily, estrogen cream (estradiol/estradiol) a penny size once a day, kenalog-10 shots 5mg once a month for 6 months to start, three months break and do another 3 each month, iron and vitamin-D3 supplementation. Sure the spironolactone and estrogen will cause feminization and potential sterilization but frankly if this doesn't bother you as a male then go for it! More dermatologists should prescribe this protocol to their patients who want their hair back at all costs. It's working for me. I went from a Norwood 3 to Norwood 1.5 doing this in a matter of months. The progress isn't done yet either. My hair continues to get longer and thicker. I have a ponytail which has become thick and long that would make too many women and men jealous. The level of happiness I feel having my hair back cannot be put to words.

Ive been studying hair loss for years as I went Norwood 7+ by 28 years old. I am now reversing over a decade of severe hair loss using natural foods and simple tools. Now I help men get their high school hair line back on my channel. Inflammation and Androgens are a large part and also the physical changes in and on the scalp.

The only natural way is to accept the nature and be bald as nature intended you to be!!! or we go the unnatural route and we try/fight to hold back hair and gain back the lost hair via the unnatural way!!!!
