It's not about tapping amount of times, it's about knocking the bubbles off the sides of the can/container. Mythbusters already tested this and explained it. You need to gently tap around the sides to get the bubbles off the sides. All over the sides. Edit: also thank you for reading comments and trying it out again.

Coke and mentos have the reaction because the sugary coating on mentos has a lot of pores, and those pores allow the bubbles to form on the surface and expand

it wont react, because the reason mentos fizzs when added to coke is because mentos have tiny nucleation sites that cause CO2 bubbles to get caught and create the fizz. without those sites youre just mixing powdered sugar.

Lucas Kolesar you’d probably end up with soap on a stick lol. The sugar heavily accelerates the solidification/saponification of cold process soap, since it creates a larger exothermic reaction with the lye than just oils alone. But yeah, it would probably make soap that could be used, if you manage to get it into a mold in time. Royalty Soaps did a beer soap that she had major difficulties with for the same reason. You should check it out if you’re curious about what might happen with soda. :)

I'm asking because I'm curious. The oil practically turns into a polymer and from previous experience that doesn't come off easy. You practically have to use your oven's cleaning setting to start over, and even that's not great. Would pressure be better than heat? That's what I'd like to know :)

Ive tested this a lot too, but all with Pepsi. All my tests have revealed the biggest factor in reducing the explosion is time. In only 13 seconds from the time the shaking stops the effects wear off. That's why the one shake blows the most, because very little time passes between the shake and the open. The only benefit of the taps is that time passes.

I worked at Pepsi for several years & have some input on this. 1st I wish you had tested Dr Pepper because it is the most carbonated. 2nd you should have weighed each can before shaking because it's very common to have different amounts in each can. Last I always tap my cans on top for 2 reasons, to clean off any dust/dirt that is on top & to remove any liquid near the opening so it doesn't spray when I open it.

I've had great success with tapping right on the inner circle of the tab with my middle finger while holding the can in the air with my other hand. It's always worked for me. IDK if I just got the magic tap or what. I do it. My stepbrothers do it. My stepdad does it. It's never failed me. Maybe it's the extreme shaking of that machine but for everyday incidents we've always had success.

the REAL tap test isn't even a tap, you crack the can open SLIGHTLY, breaking the seal just enough to allow the pressure that has escaped solution to hiss out, then you open it the rest of the way. You can make a shaken can not explode if you (with utmost gentleness) break the seal.

The one where he shook it once and the least because there were more carbonation bubbles, but the one in the paint shaker since they were shook for the longest there were less bubble plus the rapid speed of the paint shaker interfered as well and I'm most positive that's why there was less soda in the cup compared to the others, I might be wrong, but I feel pretty confident about it.

The reason the single shake can erupted more is because it was a sudden change and all the bubbles went to the top immediately causing it to erupt more other than the longer, constant paint shaker distributing the bubbles everywhere in the can

I always flick the sides very hard a few times. My reasoning is that the bubbles can stick very well to the sides and would presumably take a lot of energy to detach from the can. You can see and test this effect much easier with a clear bottle of carbonated liquid.

I think the paint shaker was actually dissolving the air into the liquid. That usually is what expands to push the liquid up. This is why the single shock seemed to agitate more than the shaker.

The reason for this is because when the can is being shaken so vigorously it's kind of folding and moving all the bubbles and liquid over and under and so it's mixing whereas when it's one big shake all the liquid moves as one and makes one large air pocket at the bottom which creates a mini vacuum in the can in a similar way to what happens when you smack a glass bottle with a little liquid in the bottom and it shatters the glass, but since the can can't shatter the mini vacuum simply decreases the pressure in the can and then when it's opened the air rushes into this miniature vacuum which moves all the liquid around and makes the molecules collide with one another more as the pressure difference equalises and this agitates it more as a result of making it collide with itself and therefore causes more frothing and foaming from the can

Use pibb extra, it seems more carbonated than most types of soda. Also, drop the can instead of shaking it. From experience it is much more explosive when opening it (when it survives the fall).

Now that you've tested the tap method, and waiting. I think you should test how long you should wait, 30 seconds heavily reduced how much fizzed out, but I wonder if a whole minute of waiting would completely negate it? :)

My opinion and observation on this experiment is: Paint shaker has very short stroke or distance of motion, while when shaking with hands the can travels longer distance. When in paint shaker (short travel distance and high speed), bubbles cancel each other as if tapped to cancel bubbles. But when shaken with hand (especially once) bubbles are agitated and pressure is built, thus more foamy. If you want to make another experiment but with a long single stroke yet powerful, it would make your results more humanly accurate. :)

I test the can before opening it. If you hold the can with 2 fingers, one on the top and bottom edges and flick the center with your finger, the can will ring like a bell. This will give you feedback on when the can is shaken (high pressure) or not shaken (low pressure). Try it with a shaken can and an unshaken can; the tone is different and the unshaken can will resonate longer than the shaken can.

My takeaway from this: 1. One shake is enough, you don't need any more. 2. 20 secs in paint shaker is basically 3 second shake and 17 secs of waiting. 3. You should be measuring the liquid that spiiled out, rather than how much is left

I find holding the can from top and bottom with your thumb and pinky, doing a grazing flick to the side, while slowly rocking it from right side up to upside down helps reduce the agitation.

I have a younger brother who loved to shake whatever can or bottle of soft/sofa drink before handing it to me. So I learned quickly how to open them without getting it all over me when opening one: you need to open it the tiniest bit, just enough for the gas pressure to escape (it actually looks unopened) for cans and for bottles: open and close it immediately and slowly open but close when the foam almost reaches the lid. Once it isn’t fizzing foam rapidly, it’s ready to open.

I never understood why people think tapping the can would help a shaken soda can settle. The whole problem is the agitation causes the CO2 to separate from the water which pressurizes the can, and tapping is just going to agitate it more (if possibly only negligibly more). What you need to do is to get the CO2 to redissolve into the water, which is why waiting 30 seconds worked the best for them. You can also put the drink in the fridge/freezer, as cold water dissolves CO2 much more readily than warm water so the CO2 will redissolve faster and more reliably. (This is why warm drinks are the most explosive as the water can't dissolve as much of the CO2 and it separates much more easily.) Alternatively, you could also open the can slowly so the pressure gets gradually released rather than all at once. It's harder to do with a can, but with a plastic bottle it's pretty straightforward.
