I decided to stop using transpose button when I played on a keyboard I hadn't used before and couldn't find the transpose. To cut the long story short, I had to sit out more than 3 quarters of the songs because I couldn't play in the keys they were being sung in. I went home very mad, and practiced more than 12 hrs a day for one week. I had to endure sounding basic on other keys but after some time, the hard work has paid off. Playing in all keys is now normal and I've actually learnt that all keys are unique in terms of sound and feel. Transposing just robs you of those unique sounds.
@Triggerkeys2 жыл бұрын
I’m so proud of you mate It’s just sad that most of us have to stop transposing after an embarrassment 😂😂 Some people hate the process of sounding basic in other keys but they don’t realise that you will have to be patient with yourself and with time you will sound the same or almost the same in most of the keys. It’s interesting to play other keys because of different positions of the keys but yea proud of you man 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I do not advise anyone I teach to use the transpose button because I've seen how much of a struggle it is to stop, most keyboard players get comfortable with it and just settle on the transpose. It's a good note you mentioned thee about playing the song in its key, that's how I learned all the keys and that's my main advice to anyone I meet struggling with playing all the keys.
@Triggerkeys2 жыл бұрын
You can say that again brother. When you get comfortable it’s almost impossible to learn other keys if you are not careful because it feels like you are going back to Grade1 lol. Thank you so much for encouraging your students to play all the keys🙏 God bless you

I agree with you l always tell my friend to concentrate on sound rather than worrying about playing in all keys but rather practice other keys slowly you will get it because he plays bass and l know playing bass it’s about shapes it’s different from piano where how you play in C is a bit different to Db or Eb and so on but above all be encouraged to play in all keys not pressured rather because most of us self taught guys usually we start from transposing but eventually you will get all the 12 keys God willingly
@Triggerkeys2 жыл бұрын
Exactly👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Someone should learn other keys not from pressure but because they want to. It is a long process that needs serious focus so if you are forced then it will not work. The good thing with playing other keys is the fact that you will in other keys differently in terms of your voicing which is caused by the keys placement. I respect those guys who are self taught man 🙏

Same here with the transposing. I started playing at a church with an upright piano. My process was learning the scales, then of , I would learn them in the key they were written in and then work on a key every month and progressions and patterns. It took a while but not as long as it was to learn my first key.

Luck you fam On a Piano there is no 2ways lol. It’s always good to explore all the different keys because you will start to understand some hidden things like the relationship between keys and how the same chord can be used in different keys as a passing chord

I agree with you sir that nobody should be neglected. Nobody should feel superior because of it. Rather let's help and encourage others. But honestly it's hard without the help of God. On the receiving side; I used to be a victim of this negligence, but then instead of letting it get to me, It became a motivation and a target I told myself I'd hit, so I had to transfer my plays to all keys which by God's grace was successful though uneasy.. The negligence if it comes, should be turned to a motivation instead of seeing it as something negative. I believe stones thrown at someone can be converted to steps for going higher.
@Triggerkeys2 жыл бұрын
Amen and amen on the receiving side depending with the attitude,it can be an advantage like in your case. Some people do music for fun and they have a 9 to 5 job so forcing that person to play all the keys whlist they are doing it for fun is not a good idea. I’m really happy that you wer motivated bro 🙏

Honestly sir you hit the point😃 I think that feeling of negligence on the transposers is a natural feeling which comes from the awareness of the difficulties involved in playing all keys, Because playing all keys is quite a stressful, and uneasy thing to do. So that awareness creates a kind of feeling that others who transpose aren't ready, or are lazy to work out themselves for music's sake, Which is almost true because most of them do not want to stress or stretch themselves they'd rather choose to remain comfortable, since the transpose button has solved the issue of playing all keys why then is it necessary to stretch? Which is actually a bad way of thinking.
@Triggerkeys2 жыл бұрын
Ofcourse in most cases someone would be lazy to change but those who bully others should then teach those people how to play all the keys you know and in most cases they don’t. They just boast around ☹️ It’s like seeng a problem and complain about a problem but you don’t come up with a solution. However those who want to do music fully they should consider playing all the keys because in future it will humble them lol

@@immanuelchukwudike Yes if you want to be a professional keyboardist or a full time musician, you have to master all 12 because as you progress you get to meet different types of keyboards that are somehow difficult to get used to, you also get the chance to rehearse with good bands and choirs who modulate a lot. First, with regards to modulation, would you like to use the transpose button on a big stage? which to me takes wastes a little bit of time. Secondly, looking for a transpose button on a keyboard you haven't used before is somehow stressful. There are some you can't even identify them on the keyboard. All these must humble you to learn all 12 keys if you want to be a professional. If you're able to learn all 12, what you only need is to set your tones and do other important stuff.

Yes Sir we have to encourage and help those who transpose to learn all 12 keys but they should bear in mind that it's a learning tool fixed on the keyboard. My keyboard is always transposed to -5 semitones, for all songs. We played normally, but then the band changed the tuning to fit new vocalist better, and I just transposed and continue play as I know it. Re-learning three albums worth of music would be too resourceful.

Mmmthe only time I transpose is because I’m on a 61 keys & I need that extra octave!!! The only time I go in a different key is due to request by the vocalist!!! My pops was strict on me knowing all my chords in all keys!!! I would get drilled circle of 4th & 5ths with both hands!!! It urks me when I’m around other keyboard players who only know one key!!!! Ijs🤷🏾♂️
@Triggerkeys Жыл бұрын
Good on you mate The thing is some people didn’t have the privilege of having someone to push them like what your pops did. Some were taught to play in C and they started playing in church transposing because no one taught them how to play all twelve keys and in that case I find it unfair to blame such people because our experiences are different. Someone plays keys for fun at church and they don’t really think it’s necessary to learn all the keys as if they want to do it professionally. I’m not supporting the idea of transposing but I’m saying wouldn’t it be reasonable to listen to someone’s story first. Again this is just my thinking and I can be wrong.
