Should You Upgrade Your Razor Electric Scooter? Motor Controller, Battery, Throttle, & 1ST RIDE!

Awesome video man, love this idea! Very good instructional too A modded Razor E300 is perfect for what I’m looking for. I had a Segway Ninebot and it was a pain to pull the front wheel off just to change a worn tire. All the electronics seemed fragile and I’ve heard bad things about them once you get a few problems that start. E300’s are a simple steel frame, battery, basic electronics, throttle and chain driven with one mechanical brake. Who needs fancy rainbow lights under the deck or a digital speedometer with multiple speed settings. I’ll definitely look for a cheap E300 that I can mod into a good simple commuter scooter One question - does a level 1 upgrade reduce the lifespan of the motor by much? I’d be looking to keep it pretty basic and get like 20mph top speed and increased range. With a sprocket change I’d hope to get more torque and low end acceleration rather than a fast top end.

It may reduce motor longevity, especially if run at full throttle on a large battery for a while. Good news is that a replacement motor is like 30 bucks for stock or like 50 to 60 for an upgrade. I don't know how many miles I have on this scooter but I'd say at 200, dome about 4 to 5 at a time. The thing about increasing the voltage to 36v, is that u drop the amperage needed to get power. 200watts at 24v is over 8amps, whereas 200w with a 40v battery is only 5 amps. So there is a trade off. 500w is definitely doable for these stock motors at 36v-42v. I would recommend an 8 to 10 ah battery rated to do 500w.

I also agree with putting a smaller sprocket on. I think I run a 45t v the stock 52t on my other higher power e300. Also a thicker chain but thats just bc 800 to 100w on the stock chain its really sketch

"XT60 Plug Power Parallel Battery" and then "xt60 to spade". I made mine but u can do the same thing with those 2 cables. Or buy just the xt60 parallel and cut the other end off and put femal spade connectors on the single end.

@KY-YE at this time, I'm very busy with my other job, I'm sorry. I would like to build more sometime but currently I have very little energy left after a long day building other stuff. Is there a smoother speed controller out there now that I’m asking you the question it would probably be the brushless set up but is it the motor or is it the speed control or is it the throttle one more question, do you think a twist throttle is better than a thumb throttle?

All variables throttles will give you a much smoother acceleration than just the standard on/off that comes with the e300 stock. You will need a new motor controller that accepts this throttle. If u are using the stock motor, a cheap brushed controller is like 13 bucks. 500w is good start that won't tax the stock motor too much. My 75 year old mom borrows the scooter in this video to go on longer trips across town than she can comfortably pedal her bike, and really enjoys the smooth acceleration. Other scooters that I have that have more power, she doesn't like bc its not as controllable as just a stock setup with a new battery, motor controller and variable throttle.

Bro . I make scooters (very fast ones) you either want a suspension, or you want a big tire . The faster they go the faster they fall apart! It would be cool for much farther range / efficiency? But to go much faster is skech

@Vmaxfodder I agree. 22 to 25 is super sketch on these scooters. The ability to ride hard suspension bikes and scooters is learned, not everyone can do it. These scooters definitely have more potential than the stock 15mph or whatever. My red one that has a 1500w brushless is like a drag car. Really good at doing one thing, not a daily driver. I agree that a good suspension will be safer and faster for 95% of riders. Thanks for the comment

@Vmaxfodder my 75 year old mom rides it occasionally, I ride my one of my onewheels mostly. I live in a very small city where the furthest I have to go is 5 miles. But a suron or a hyper scooter that does 55 to 70 does sound tempting!

The stock motor is a 24v so this mod is already overvolting the motor. Many people have run 36v 500w controllers, however idk if it can handle that much amperage without letting the magic smoke out. I have another one I put one of those cheap 1500w brushless on but its crazy big and requires extensive mods. Rc test flight made one with a 8000w alien power systems 84mm outrunner brushless motor. Goes like 50 mph. I wouldn't push more than 700w on the stock, and not for long. The motor gets hot If I ise it full throttle for like 3 miles.

@@randallgaus502 yeah just make sure u have a brushless controller for brushless and a brushed for brushed motors. Easiest way to tell is if motor has 2 or 3 wires, or 8 for that matter. 2 is brushed 3 big is brushless

@@HughsScamProducts Yeah it's a brushed motor. The controller is one of them ones that is potted with black epoxy and only had the power in, motor out, and throttle input. Maybe I'll give it a try.

Do you have any preferences on thumb throttle?

It's really kinda personal preference. I have an old road legal Enduro dirt bike, so I'm really used to a twist grip. That being said, I think thumb throttles are a little safer, bc in an emergency, people will sometimes accidentally engage the throttle while trying to maintain control of the handlebars. I have a cheap thumb throttle/voltmeter I picked up for like 12$ and it works well. They all do the same thing pretty much, which is just providing a variable voltage from 1v to 4v, which the controller uses for determining how much power to give to the motor. Just a cheap hall effect sensor in almost all of them. Hope that helps answer questions

Im.sorry I don't currently have time to go back thru and find current links. The key words to search for the parts you need should be in the video. Throttles, motor controllers batteries are all pretty much the same, you may have to change the connectors at the ends to make them match. Idk if hoverboard batteries are as cheap and plentiful these days so im bot sure where to search for them. Ebike and scooter parts are pretty much the same. Just make sure u get a brushed motor controller not brushless if your sticking to stock

If u switch out to a 24v lithium it will last longer and be a little faster. You cannot use a 36v battery with the stock controller. I recommend at least a 10ah 24v battery if u are going that way

Out of curiosity do you know how water resistant the motor stock motor is?

Really depends on the water, how submerged and stuff. I saw a video of a guy running his rc motors under water to clean mud out, but idk about that. Best is to use wd40 lubricant on the front and back of the motor. It may smoke a little as the wd 40 burns of the brushes. It will help with dust and dirt build up. Other parts of the scooter such as the controller are definitely not waterproof

@@HughsScamProducts If I'm doing a 48v system (I know I'm overvolting the motor) do I need to connect the breaker? Also is the breaker just like a fuse? The battery has a built-in BMS but that only protects the battery right?

Not the stock one. It's a switch not a throttle.

That depends on the weight of the rider and the terrain. My current motor (200W) gets very hot in my E200 running with the 7S 4P pack I built. I am currently upgrading my scooter to a 350W Motor and controller so it can go faster and handle the load.

I have not done a video yet but I should. I used a 1500w brushless motor, about 100$, 1000w brushless controller (25$) and a 10ah 36v battery(130$). Also a headlight/horn(16$), alarm (12$), variable throttle (10$),custom switch holder for crusie control switch, (6$). As far as mods on the frame itself, cut off kick stand and added 2 small steel bars to mount the larger motor. I will try to make a quick overview video soon

@@vikkidyer yes, most controllers are setup at a certain voltage. Some are 36v or 48v but they will have cut off voltages that are set so the batteries don't over drain
