Low end shoppers should WAIT until big companies like Amazon buy a good computer in bulk and put it on sale, usually for the holidays. I'm sure they'll be plenty of great deals this holiday season on computers. Just be patient and wait a few months. Especially when the next generation is right around the corner.

I wonder if you guys have some idea about monitor stuff as well? The recent releases of the new QD-OLED and WOLED monitors and TVs (like the LG C4 and G4) are being marketed even here in Southeast Asia, but it's WEIRD because you can't find any of the mainly marketed stuff on any store online at all and local stores always have an out-of-stock sign on them even if there are ads showing they're out now. It's like they're marketing them, but not selling them at all. And even when I ask stores, I get no proper answer why they're not available. It's just weird.

@@cairnex4473 "If their new cards don't represent better price/performance than their last generation then they won't sell." People buy Nvidia regardless of price/perf. Assume that Nvidia will boost RT performance which is becoming a big deal. They could also launch a new gen of DLSS that only works for 5000 series. In other words this is more than just raster perf. If the 5090 is 30% faster than the 4090, it's an $1800 - $2000 GPU because of the boost to everything else, so what that really means is a 30% boost in perf. using RT, and then a better boost using a new version of DLSS along with the added tensor cores. Nvidia is going to keep selling top end GPUs because there will be the upper 20% in the wealth bracket or household income that can easily afford it, and that's probably a good 50+ million families around the world and with as big as gaming has gotten EVEN WITH Microsoft screwing things up, there'll be enough sales there because they can. Yes, if Nvidia launches a new gen of DLSS that only works for 5000 series there'll be the bitching and moaning by TBers and in the comments section, and then people rush out to buy 5000 series. But hey, maybe after the 5000 series is out for a while the 4090 drops in price to $1500 and they'll only cost $1700 from retailers.

Any time I hear the question "Buy Now or Wait", it always comes down to this: 1- If you need a card, any card, just to play games, and you have none right now, then just buy. There will always be price drops and sales coming out. Get what you need to play, that will keep you tided over for now. I'd start with a used 30xx or 6xxx GPU at 1080p. 2- If you want the best of the best, just get what's out. They very rarely decrease in price before new stuff comes out. The 4090 won't get cheaper til the 5090 is out, and then you'll be wanting to buy that instead. Just suck it up and pay the money, if that's what you really want. Or don't. 3- If you need to upgrade or replace an existing card, that's where it gets more tricky. You really have to know what performance you want, the card that's best for that, and then watch the market for a while to see about price fluxuations. Typically cards are at their best prices when demand is down between releases (like right now) or once newer cards are out and noone wants the old card. For instance, if you are on a 10xx or older card, the past year has been a great chance to upgrade to a 30xx card. Still is, if you can find a new one, but if you're happy with used there's plenty stock available.

Yeah, to me it's difficult because I got a 6600 and I want to get av1 encoding which I see a lot of people being so polarized about it. I do tons of encoding and decoding so I'd like to have my storage cost nearly halved and my performance a third up (looking at the 7600XT), and 16gb VRAM for eventual AI workloads. Apparently there's some NPUs in the 7600xt but there isn't much use I heard, but perhaps in the future? Also the reason I look for the x600 series is because of the lower power envelope, I got a tiny PC case to stay mobile. I know that game devs and GPU companies are perfectly able to make very efficient graphics and I want to put my money there, to kinda tell them to fxxk off with the huge thermonuclear cards!!

@silverhawkroman in your situation, I'd probably get the 3060 12gb or 7700 xt. The 3060 would only be better for vram and the encoding, but on par graphically. 7700xt beats it solidly.

That segment starting at 16:40 … none of what you talk about should be causing a massive drop in sales in any one period. US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) dictate that any credits (known as MDF in the industry) are recognized in the period in which they are earned regardless of when the cash/product is rebated back to the retailer. This may have been an issue with respect to a big drop in cash flow, but in terms of reported revenue it’s a complete non-factor. Another way of explaining this is that in a particular period, if a retailer sold a card for $500 as in your example, but then earned $50 in MDF credits from AMD, the revenue recognized from AMD would have been the $400 BOM kit to the OEM minus the $50 credit to the retailer. They would have only recognized $350 in revenue on that sale even though they’re receiving $400 in cash from the OEM. When the retailer cashes in those accumulated credits, they’re effectively redeeming that $50 credit sitting on AMD’s balance sheet. This is essentially gift card accounting for B2B transactions. Revenue is recognized when merchandise changes hands, but the cash flow is going to be different because of the issuance and redemption of those credits/gift cards.

Noice Mr. Finance. Keepin' us all smarter than the plebs.
@RobBCactive
@RobBCactive 2 ай бұрын
Nobody said it caused the drop in sales. A year ago there were new models still at high prices, this year same models and prices have fallen. So if they're booking $50 retailers' credits it's no longer a $400 BOM but a reduced margin $300 so AIB can profit and retailers can sell them cheaper claiming new credits, so proportionately the numbers are worse as there's still fixed costs in the biz to pay. Falling sales and lower margins at the same time as falling console sales lower revenue and profit.

It isn't that AMD is selling less. They are selling for less money. I.e. margins are lower due to the over production of RNDA2. The RX 6600 was a 329.99 MSRP gpu...it has been regularly selling for 199 for quite a while now.

@@Kynareth6 Unfortunately, they know they can get a lot of people to spend beyond their means if they gatekeep/paywall good performance in the latest games. Add to that the actual fact that it IS a lot harder to produce a good value low end card now... Especially since people's build quality expectations are really high these days compare GPU coolers now to 10 years ago, they are NOT the same. Mind you, I do think something like a 4070 that looks like a janky PCB with a cheap cooler zip tied to it could actually sell well if it didn't thermal throttle and provided a significant enough savings. At the end of the day these companies have decided that if you don't want to spend $500+ then you should stick with the older generation that they overproduced. If u really want RT I'd go for a 4070ti super and nothing else. 4080 is not a big uplift considering the price difference and they both have 16 gigs, which is too low for the 4080 imo (I have a 7900xtx nitro+). In addition, Nvidia might do a bullshit release again with the 5070 like with the 4070ti and the silly 12 GB VRAM for 850 bucks and it will take a year till it's launched. If u wanna enjoy ur time gaming in RT, go for 4070 to super and nothing else unless u are willing to make worse deals for not much improvement. Personally I think RT doesn't look better, just different, but eats up way too much performance. Only PT makes sense visually but even the 4090 is too weak. So raster is still the way to go for at least the next 3 years. And hardware and performance wise Amd just beats Nvidia in that sector. It's just better value if u ask me. RT needs a few more years before it becomes relevant in any way.

It's because the 7900xtx is a higher value product in terms of components quality and longevity. Nvidia doesn't allow much headroom at all for pricing for their AIBs, so they have to cut every corner to make at least a little profit. That's why EVGA left. From a software standpoint, the 4080 is simply to weak to handle raytracing in 4k without upscaling. But why buy such an expensive card when u will have to play in a lower res using upscaling? That's so bad. RT doesn't even look better, just different. Only PT looks better, but even the 4090 can't handle it with laughable 20 fps at 4k. Current gen Nvidia GPUs can't handle their own features and next Gen nvidias will have 50 series exclusive features, blocking 40 series owners, same as now with the 30 series.. So from a pure gaming standpoint there is just no reason to not prefer raster performance. And given the 24 gigs of VRAM of the 7900xtx (yes overkill), u don't have to lower the res to still be able to play in 4k in the next 5 years. But with the 4080 and the greedy 16 gigs it's already looking bad even right now in some titles in 4k (additional texture mods far exceed 16 gigs). Marketing-wise AMD should lower prices, but from a technical and hardware standpoint the 7900xtx is just the higher value product and will last much longer than a 4080. If u don't believe it just wait and see. Even if both cards were at the same price, for me and my gaming needs and the expected longevity of both cards, the 7900xtx would still be the better choice by far,cause of the 24 GB of VRAM alone. I'm not even talking about the rediculous power connector of the 4080/4090 that can burn your house down if it's 1mm off.

Same here. But the problem with iRacing is their 10+ year old engine that works at 60Hz (+ 6 steps in one Hz; so it's like 360Hz but not really). Triple 4K is hard for any game, and in this scenario, new/faster GPU will help. They announced a new engine is in the works, when they hired a bunch of devs, but that is years away. Remember, they announced rain is coming a year+ ago, and we got it two months ago. The problem with ACC is graphics engine (UE4). Currently, 58X3D is "enough CPU" for online big grids. I really hope when AC 2 comes out, it will be optimized for new 8 core CPUs and decent GFX engine with VR in mind. It should come out this year, but I'm very skeptical. Maybe early access, like with ACC. We are getting GTRevival, which should be on the sim side very strongly. And they said they are going away from UE5 because "120Hz in VR is not possible." -Ian Bell. But this is also at least a year away. Rennsport is dead, IMO. AMS2 has no online presence. So we, simracers, are in the weird spot right now. While prices of equipment are the lowest they have ever been (wheels, pedals, rigs,...), we don't have any decent sim that utilizes new CPUs and GPUs.

I believe that the real resaon AMD is predicting equal or less earnings in the 2nd half of the year is because they might try to make a move on Nvidias market share at mainstream price points with the RX 8000 series. If the leaks of Moore's Law Is Dead are anything to go by (which they have been proven to be in the past), the 8800XT might offer 7900XT level of rasterization performance aswell as +30% Raytracing performance at 500$ compared to the 7900XTs 700$ (and 900$ launch price). Considering that RDNA 4 is not a clean slate Desing but more of a "bug fix" for RDNA 3, to achive this scale of generational price to performance uplift, profit margins have to be minimal. If AMD is making a move on market share, even if desktop GPU sales are expectet to rise significantly, AMD would not expect a revenue increase (and potentially a revenue decrease) due to extremely low profit margins. Therefore, AMD would be trading short term revenue for market share by lowering margins. This is something that they have done repeatetly in the past and that makes sense considering their current market share is likely holding them back from piercing into the Nvidia core buyers portion of the market (Mainsteam/ non Hardware-Enthusiast Market). Altough this asessment is based on a logical line of thought, i do hope for every gamers sake that i am right and we might see some major competition in the desktop GPU market.

It is pretty much confirmed at this point that AMD will not be competing in the high end next generation. You've seen Nvidia's pricing when AMD is close: The 3090 was $1600 when the $1000 6900XT was only 10% weaker in raster. The 4090 is effectively $1800 when the, now, $850-900 7900XTX is only 20% weaker in raster.... who the FUCK do you think they're going to price things when the strongest AMD card will go against the 5070?

Right....as if opening a box or repairing a product back to QC standard is somehow worse than the gamble of a new non-validated unit. You do realize that a refurbished product is validated to meet QC right? Refurbished products be it 3rd part authorized or 1st party is also far less likely to be DOA or fail than a new product. New product are tested by batches. Bad unit get missed in some batches, then get sent to a customer to be DOA or fail early. ALL refurbished units are required to fully pass QC as if it's new, or they never leave their facility. I have years of refurb experience and one of which was in QC, so I know first hand. At least within the SE U.S. I shouldn't have to explain why an unused GPU in an open box isn't a problem. But hey, by all means if you don't believe my experience, that's fine. Well if you're following basically any hardware news channels, the rumours that RDNA 4 is basically going to be a bugfix really only improving RT perf is already out there. So it sets the expectations of the people. RDNA 5 is the one that has the potential to be a letdown because now you've had basically 2 generations of cards that are on the same performance range having made relatively little gains from 6000 series, and many of the 6000 and 7000 series owners are gonna be looking to upgrade to the 9000 series for a new breath of life. Given that most people are looking to upgrade every 2 generations or so(HW unboxed survery) So, if AMD doesnt deliver with at least i'd say 30-50% uplift, they might be looking at a serious market share loss as some people jump ship to nvidia assuming they have decent gains gen/gen which could add up to the 30-50% that upgraders are looking for. It their price is even remotely acceptable and if blackwell doesnt sell well, it can throw nvidia into a 3000 series situation where they cut prices and people are going to start jumping and AMD is gonna have to keep the consumer GPU team on life support because the revenue stream from people upgrading isnt going to come. RDNA 5 is going to be a big turning point for AMD for most consumers who upgrade every 2-3 generations. Only time will tell how well the new architecture will perform and whether in the eyes of the price/performance conscious consumer, they win out nvidia in the mid range and keep their customer base.
@andersjjensen

Depends on what you're looking for. If the top card comes out at around a 7900XT in performance, with much better RT, 16GB and a 100W reduction in power usage for, say, $550, then a lot people are going to find that attractive. If you're looking for "a 5090 competitor, but cheaper", then yeah, sure, you're going to be disappointed.
