Should your Cane Corso be allowed on the couch?

My rule is whatever behavior you do not want in adulthood, you discourage it in puppyhood. When It comes to the couch, I say yes but my wife says no. The mistake she made was that she did not object to couch access until the dog was 5 months. So I overruled her. I paid for the couch, and I paid for the dog. Hell no to access to the bed. Free reign of the house has to be earned, usually not until 1 to 2 years old. In my case I'm only talking about a household with 1 dog.

I learned the hard way when I left my 2 six month old Corsos alone with free run in the house while I went out to feed livestock. They tore all the stuffing out of my recliner, ate my slippers, two remote controls and scattered garbage everywhere. They most enjoyed pulling all the feathers out of my bed pillows and comforter. My dogs sleep in my bedroom in their own beds. I sleep higher in my bed because i am leader of the pack. They are allowed on one sofa in the family room. They do not have full run of the house. They are both crate trained. I live on a ranch with a lot of land but they don't have full run there either. I fenced a half acre yard for them to play and excercise in. It is for their protection. I have a lot of skunks and porcupines. My dogs love camping, riding in the boat and fun car rides to places we can explore. They especially love the McDonald's when we drive to town. They always get a cheeseburger and a kiddie ice cream cone. I absolutely love these dogs. They are highly intelligent, eager to learn and please their owner and are the best protection.

I personally, don’t recommend dogs on any furniture intended for human use. However suitable bedding that’s deemed to be theirs must be provided. Dogs are loyal companions, but also pack animals, and some like to test the boundaries. As a dog trainer I have seen it many times where adorable traits as puppies, has lead to serious issues in adolescence and older dogs. Dogs though part of a family, must still be treated as dogs. This leads to happy owners, and loyal respectful dogs.

I feel the same way...no furniture is too good for my animals. Thing is they've worn a light patch in the leather sofa so no more leather-surfaced furniture. Wonder if anyone makes a kevlar sofa? 😂

Your dogs really are a part of the family and I like that. Although I know an animal is an animal it hurts me to see people leave them outside and just see them as dollar signs or just "dogs" like they don't deserve to be treated with care and love.

We do a very similar thing with our 2 Corsos. They have a couch in "their room" that we allow them onto as they desire, but the couch in the main family room they are rarely allowed on, only when invited and only when they are calm. Usually at the end of the night when they want to snuggle and fall asleep. Honestly it took work to get them to understand there is a difference between the 2 couches and as they are only 8&10 months old they forget sometimes and will try to play on the family couch but for the most part they've got it down. Keep up the great content!

As you stated, it's a personal choice! My baby slept on the couch, the bed and his bed when he felt like it. He's older now and doesn't climb up on anything anymore 😪 He still likes to lay so I can rest my feet on him which I do daily while crocheting 😂😂😂. Other than no more climbing on anything, he loves to play, still runs fast, spoiled as ever and I love him with all my heart. I believe furbabies are family and should be treated as such.

I have a German Shepherd that has free range of the house. Even while we are gone. He's not allowed on any furniture due to hair shedding and nails. We do have a crate that he goes in with no problems when we have company. Everyone is happy over here.

I went to the pound to get a small dog which doesn’t cast!! Came away with a golden Labrador. She not only has the run of my house but also my parents! As you say it’s a personal preference. I love how you allow your dogs to roam and be part of the family

You're right. It's personal preference. We have a 200 pound Saint Bernard and we limit him where he goes. He usually stays downstairs where the man cave is located and roam freely. He loves it there and he also has access to the garage from the man cave. When it's warm, he goes in the garage to cool off on the cement. Sometimes when he wants company he'd come upstairs and stays in the hallway. With all his drooling and shedding, we have to limit his access to the house. Thanks for the awesome videos. I have a12 pound Maltese/Shih Tzu mix that has full roam of the house when I'm gone. She's allowed on the furniture and sometimes sleeps with me at the bottom of my bed on top of the comforter. I've also owned a dachshund who passed away three years ago but when Toby was living he slept with me under the comfort on top of the blanket as he loved to burrow. I've always had small dogs so that's why they've always been allowed in my bed. However, it's a personal preference. If my dogs were bigger they probably wouldn't be allowed in my bed, not because I wouldn't let them, but because I wouldn't have any room to move.

I don't really mind where they go, personally... but after my wife's experience at our previous residence... which is really her first experience with dogs... their have been boundaries set. For her... it's the kitchen. Which I understand... they don't NEED to be in there. It's funny how smart they are. Knowing not to cross the invisible boundary... and now at our new location... walking around. 😂 They had a couch at our old location that that the landlord gave us... and they pretty much tore it up over a 3 year period. We didn't use it after a while, anymore. We haven't gotten any furniture, yet... at our new location... and don't plan to... as my wife is already ready to go. 😂 They were in the bed with us at the last location... but not this one. We don't do bed sharing, anymore. 🤷🏾‍♂️ I realize I'll have to get my own set up to share with them the way I want. Basically a whole other house to interact with them the way I have always dreamed... as I like dogs and other animals more than people, anyway. 🤷🏾‍♂️ I'm a TRUE dog man. 🐕💪🏿 In my man cave... I plan on allowing them certain privileges. These things are earned, of course... and taken away when & if they get to feeling themselves... which they do with my wife more so than me. I establish my position as alpha early on... and use physical contact & bonding as a treat/reward... for good behavior... not just because they exist.

Well since my German shepherd is a service dog soooo... . . . Yes she is allowed run of the house. She is allowed on the couch when allowed. She is allowed on my bed but restricted to the foot of the bed unless she is alerting me to a problem that I haven't picked up on. As I have PTSD she is allowed any where I'm at but she is only allowed on me to stabilize me when having sever muscle spasms. She has boundaries and respects those boundaries since they were instilled from day one when I got her at 8 weeks old.

The alpha has to first establish a mutual understanding of control and set the boundaries early. Once established, than they’d be allow to earn certain privileges. Because from what I’ve seen in your videos, these majestic animals have been taught the three vows, love honor and obey with love being the strongest of the three and other two will closely follow. So the answer to allow couch privileges is yes. You guys will always be my forever favorite when it comes to the beauty of your cane corso. Great looking pack.

My dogs were allowed on the furniture couch and bed and their bed and their crate it was all about them. My Labrador chewed up one and a half couches. My Pitt never chewed up the furniture but whenever I moved off of the sofa he would claim my spot and then I would have to claim it back by threatening to sit on him and he would use his paws to push up on me as I was putting the wide load down on him he was such a funny boy, miss him very much 💔

I feel like dogs should be allowed on the couch, but I know those are my emotions speaking. I believe dogs can be perfectly happy either way, you just need to stick to your boundaries. If I was not going to allow my dog on the couch, I would provide her with a nice bed or dog sized couch nearby. I'm new here! That will be A Nope, Hubby has claimed the couch in the family room but, my 2 adult females Rotties living space is there on their on their memory foam pillows. So our only trustworthy is the Rottweiler, she has free roam all-day while we're not home. The Corso Rotty mix can't be trusted because he will eat anything, to scared for him to swallow something. But when we travel everyone comes along, and both our over 100lb dogs sleep with us. ❤️ We see our babies as family members, they are loved and adored.

I do not allow my Boerboel on the couch or the bed. I also have 2 Standard Poodles. My boys are crate trained. They go in and out on their own. Is their safe haven. Since dogs don’t wipe their butts, or may even drop pee is why are not allowed on my furniture. However, they have “dog beds” throughout the house.

My corso and pit are allowed on the couch but I have a blanket to cover it and wash it once a week. They are allowed on my bed but when it’s time for bed time they go in there create. O purchased one of those really large bean bags on Amazon. It is 6x3. It is for people use but I got it for our Giant Schnauzer. She loves it, and I can get on it with her when she wants to cuddle. I love my bully to death, he is my companion my spirit animal and alll around baby..... having said that some days he smells beyond the point of disgust, and since I don’t want that smell on me, he has a very nice mashing washable $150 bed. And he is perfectly fine in his kennel when I m at work or not home, I don’t want to set him up for failure so preventative measures are best. I come home and we walk 45 mi s up hill every day to ensure the energy doesn’t build up.

However, the kids are okay with the cat and dog sleeping with them. The kitchen/dining area is off-limits. I do not want dog/cat or human hair in my kitchen, period.

My rule was always paws down...off the furniture. Until we dog sat a friend's dog. The first action of the visiting pet was to jump up on the back of the sofa. My dog looked at me with shock on her face. It was over from that moment on, She would be on the furniture when and if I were there or not. I love my dog but not fur on my clothes etc. You seem to have solved the problem by having homes for male and female and soon puppies. I want one of your Corsi's in the worst way but the weight is more than we are allowed at our complex. You are my fix and I predict that you will be one of the most popular vlogs. It is your classy, intelligent, educated and peaceful way. I love your inviting us to join your reclaiming the land for your home. Wish we could do the same. Blessings and prayers for you.

I don’t allow my dog on furniture ....oddly enough she never liked it. I think she finds her bed more comfortable but if she would find my furniture or bed comfortable she would still wouldn’t be allowed .....my bunny on the other hand ......👀😫

No I did not allow my Cane Corso up on my couch but when it was somebody that he did not know that came to the door he would jump up there and show how big he is and stop selling in Market I will tell him or he get off and then sit by Miley and go over them like my what you want me to do now he was something else and I miss him a lot. Now I have a shih tzu and she gets up there and curls up and goes to sleep and look out the window showing how cute she is my sister-in-law hates her up on the furniture but me and my brother just let her do whatever she wants pretty much when it comes to the couch she's a good girl. Tell my sister-in-law I don't even want it in the bed me I don't mind it she's nice and small and cute the big dogs no furniture.

I would try and let mine free roam while we were gone. But almost every time we'll come home to urine or poop. I would take her out plenty times before we left, made sure she used it and not leave her out if I had recently fed her. Basically she had been fed hours before she was left alone. I'll leave her balls and rawhide. So now she's in her kennel when we leave. Wish she could be trusted but she would prove us wrong. She was 5 to 7 months at the time.

I’m on the fence about the couch...but definitely not on the bed. I respect their bed and they need to respect mine lol Plus it’s nice to have at least one piece of furniture that stays free of their fur and other grime

What the hell do you have in your mouth, lol that's one of my many commands! And YES, my dog is my family, shoot, he sleeps in my bed! You have a lot of dogs, so i definitely can see your rules about free roaming would be more strict. My dog will eventually get free roaming privilege, but he's 4 mos old, so it'll come, when he's fully trained, and fully potty trained. I just use baby gates to section off my house until he's ready and I'm ready to let him have access, its definitely an earned privilege! because you're right, we are the leaders amd we need to determine when, and what they can and can't do at all times. Great video discussion!
