ATHLEAN-X Training System - athleanx.com/x/shoulderpress
Overhead shoulder pressing, either with a barbell or dumbbells, is one of the most effective yet potentially harmful exercises you can do...especially if you already have shoulder joint or impingement pain. That is...unless...you know how to modify the shoulder press to eliminate the aggravating part of the exercise.
In this video I'm going to show you how you can modify the classic dumbbell shoulder press to still get the amazing shoulder muscle building benefits of the exercise without the discomfort that can come from having your elbows pointing out to your sides. Before you think that you will be sacrificing the amount of weight that you can lift on this shoulder exercise with the tweak I'm going to show you, make sure you watch the end of the video and I'll show you how to instantly overload your shoulder muscles (without aggravating the joints) with the single arm press variation.
If you look at the normal anatomy of the shoulder, and the glenohumeral joint in particular, you notice that the natural angle of the glenoid fossa is slightly forward. This means that when you perform overhead shoulder pressing with your elbows straight out to your side that you're going against the anatomy and causing potential for structural damage.
By making the adaptation shown in this workout video, you'll see not only how but why making this shoulder overhead pressing switch can very well be the solution you've been waiting for to get your shoulder bigger without damaging your joints in the process.
That said, if you feel that you've been looking for a complete solution to getting bigger and more developed muscles without the breakdown that comes from lifting too heavy or at the wrong time with the wrong program, then you should definitely check out the physical therapist created ATHLEAN-X program by Jeff Cavaliere. From the trainer to some of the world's most elite athletes to you...the ATHLEAN-X program is now available at athleanx.com

my left shoulder is MESSED up, so ive been struggling with most overhead movements, so I gave this a go a few weeks ago, and I can assure anyone who has problems with delt pressing movements, this exercise will breath new life into your training, such a simple variation to set up but a VERY good alternative, thanks Jeff.

Excellent and legit advices. Rule of thumb if you have had any shoulder injuries before, always have your elbows at sight when performing overhead or chest press exercises. Never let your arms go too far behind your shoulders.

Early on I didn't have the good advice on form and training that I do now, and boy am I paying for it. Your videos really help guys like me continue to work out and not subside to a poor physique due to old injury limitations. Thank you!!! P.S. - I REALLY love the new skeleton videos, where you are able to show exactly where impingement can happen and why! Those have helped me tremendously!!! So logical. I did this today and what a HUGE difference it makes ! The whole move feels so much better than the old style shoulder press, and I highly recommend anyone to try it out. At the very worst, do like Jeff says and move your elbows in with dumb bells--I can get a very good overload using 40s and 45s that way !

Jeff, your good ideas always inspire me to think of variations that might work with what equipment I happen to have. Echoing your idea of both hands on a single bar, I tried this using both hands on a single dumbell and it worked reasonably well, the only limitation being that the dumbell was a Bowflex, which only goes up to 52.5 lbs. When using a pair, I think I've always instinctively pulled my elbows in a bit for more comfort, though I'm grateful to now be consciously aware of the benefit.

Have had constant problems since. I used to sleep with my arm draped over my face...not anymore! Anything overhead, rotating or like you said as soon as my elbows come out away from my chest it starts!
