It also illustrates a point. When Hitler was told that Steiner refused to attack due to having only a few trained soldiers and hundreds of civilians given guns and told to fight at his disposal, I imagine it was as silent as the grave. Quiet enough to hear a pin drop. That tension was felt in each person in that room as they watched Hitler process that information, wondering how bad this was going to get.

@@Bluesit32 Hitler's last week is controversial, because a lot of it was obtained from Soviets who interviewed the survivors. Remember, it was the Soviets who took Berlin, and therefore the Soviets who wrote the story on Hitler's last days. The "Downfall" movie is based on what was written down in history, but remember that it was the Soviets who wrote the history in the first place. It has been suggested that Hitler may have not had this kind of outburst, for example, and that this outburst was added by Soviets who rewrote history to "spice it up".

Ganz's performance is pure genius. Probably the best performance of a historical character ever put on film. I saw Downfall in the theatre. Ganz's explosions of rage were terrifying to experience - I could feel the fear in the audience. It was a devastating experience and is a brilliant film.
@GlennDavey2 жыл бұрын
Reading up on Ganz's approach, he said he never even came close to understanding the man, he just worked out each scene like he would any other in his normal acting formula and did the best job he could. But he doesn't understand the overall mindset, just able to break down individual emotions and play them as he would any other character. And that says a lot about how professional the man was. Nobody could really understand Hitler, so to play him so well, is the mark of an experienced thespian

Fun fact: this reenactment is always portrayed as showing the whole encounter lasted about 5-6 minutes. In reality, those from the bunker who wrote memoirs after the war said the entire rant lasted almost 30 minutes with several pauses for Hitler to catch his breath. In a way, it was his last will and testament. He knew was war was lost and that Berlin would fall so he took this final chance to lay into everyone in the room to tell them how they failed not only him, but the German people and Germany itself. He let them all have it.

Agreed. There's humour in the original scene without all the dumb memes. The irony of Hitler's Hubris and denial in spite of his obvious defeat. It's known as "Dramatic Irony". It's a tragic humour, but it's still a comedy of sorts. The memes just assume that the source material is deadly serious, and derive their humour from ireverrant parody. The memes derive their comedy from parodying the scene, but without the underlying intentional dark humour of the original scene, the memes wouldn't be funny.

I feel like Ganz managed a feat of acting here that is really astounding: embodying the character in a way that was both deeply humanistic, yet unflinchingly honest about how utterly monstrous Hitler truly was. Theres no cartoon villainy, no mustache twirling or hyperbole, just a delusional, hateful old man reaping exactly what he has sown.
@BlisterKitten3 жыл бұрын
Exactly my thoughts. When this movie came out, there were inevitably people who criticized it for "humanizing" Hitler. These critics seem unable to embrace an unsettling truth: not only was Hitler very much human, the people who helped him carry out his evil plans were also human. To me, it is obviously paradoxal to see the word "human" as a synonym for "ethical". And when something is highly unethical, it is "inhumane". But something which a human being does cannot by definition be "not human".

@@BlisterKitten yeah exactly, murderers aren't monster, they are men and women and that's the most frightening part about it. While Hitler did a whole bunch of terrible things, in my opinion, we often overlook how much dirty works Heinrich did back then. He's the most disgusting one in my eyes.
@gast1283 жыл бұрын
Indeed. He loved his dog and was friendly to his secretaries while at the same responsible for millions of deaths. Not sure how people could ever see him portrayed as favorable in this movie since in the end he thought that Germany should die with him as well.

For all of his brutality, Hitler rarely took revenge on his own officers (the assassination attempt is an exception). Most of his generals at this point knew very well that the war was over and they witnessed the men under their command being slaughtered and they wanted it to stop. I think this general was just sick of it, didn't care what happened to himself, just couldn't take it that his men were being insulted as though Germany's loss were their fault. He probably though he'd be dead in a few days anyway.

Some of you people might be wondering to know who is the Hitler actor, and some of you have probably known it already. Aight this little information is for you guys who have yet to know, he is Bruno Ganz. He passed away in 16th February 2019. He was such a good actor, and there had been so many movies that was starred by him in a few film industries. You can find more information and the details about him in some other sources that might provide it. And need to be admitted that without him, the "Downfall" movie and the memes those meme masters benifited from would never exist. (Even though i actually do hate those meme makers who made memes out of this.) ~R.I.P Bruno Ganz~ (This is one of a few tributes i made for Bruno Ganz and i want to apologize for my bad use of English words as i'm not a native speaker.) ~Rest in Peace Monsieur~

@@powerboatguy2308 nah Hitler wasnt so ruthless, he unlike stalin didnt have generals executed unless it was open treason like valkyria operation and allowed generals to voice their opposition or doubt unusually often.
