In the eyes of Hitler's infamous secretary, Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara, The Reader), optimism crumbles into grim realization and terror as it becomes clear that Germany's defeat is inevitable. As the Russian army circles the city, the dimly lit halls of the underground refuge become an execution chamber for the Führer and his closest advisors.

My favourite moment of this masterful performance is the way his twitching, shaking hand removes his glasses from his face - all that pent up rage literally boiling over into his hands at that moment, and portrayed so naturally. Genius

@creativeself7147
@creativeself7147 2 ай бұрын
Agreed, it's a phenomanal performance. However, as mentioned in other comments, the constant twitching was actually caused by medical issues aswell as heavy substance abuse. Hitler not only suffered from early on-set parkinsons but also made the mistake of self-medicating himselve by using large amounts of Methamphetamine (which was essentially treated like we treat coffein these days; and you could get it at pretty much every single existing store back than). High doses of Meth almost completely stopped the symptoms of Parkinsons for quite a while but eventually, combined with the constant stress and fear caused by the war, his dopamine-receptors snapped and he became extremely irratic, impulsive and was no longer able to rest his hand.

I worked as an extra on that movie. Before and between takes the director played a mix of German music from the 1940's and bombing sounds, an absurd noise that created a feeling of terror and claustrophobia, especially as we couldn't leave the set. It was traumatazing but the perfect energy for the film.

It also illustrates a point. When Hitler was told that Steiner refused to attack due to having only a few trained soldiers and hundreds of civilians given guns and told to fight at his disposal, I imagine it was as silent as the grave. Quiet enough to hear a pin drop. That tension was felt in each person in that room as they watched Hitler process that information, wondering how bad this was going to get.

@@Bluesit32 Hitler's last week is controversial, because a lot of it was obtained from Soviets who interviewed the survivors. Remember, it was the Soviets who took Berlin, and therefore the Soviets who wrote the story on Hitler's last days. The "Downfall" movie is based on what was written down in history, but remember that it was the Soviets who wrote the history in the first place. It has been suggested that Hitler may have not had this kind of outburst, for example, and that this outburst was added by Soviets who rewrote history to "spice it up".

People keep stating how this was inaccurate because in real life the memoirs of the generals stated the rant went on for 30 minutes. You all DO realize a scene like that could NEVER carry on for 30 minutes in a movie. That's literally a huge chunk of the movie spent in 1 room with no progression to the film whatsoever. Sometimes brevity is better than accuracy.

Fun fact: this reenactment is always portrayed as showing the whole encounter lasted about 5-6 minutes. In reality, those from the bunker who wrote memoirs after the war said the entire rant lasted almost 30 minutes with several pauses for Hitler to catch his breath. In a way, it was his last will and testament. He knew was war was lost and that Berlin would fall so he took this final chance to lay into everyone in the room to tell them how they failed not only him, but the German people and Germany itself. He let them all have it.

Agreed. There's humour in the original scene without all the dumb memes. The irony of Hitler's Hubris and denial in spite of his obvious defeat. It's known as "Dramatic Irony". It's a tragic humour, but it's still a comedy of sorts. The memes just assume that the source material is deadly serious, and derive their humour from ireverrant parody. The memes derive their comedy from parodying the scene, but without the underlying intentional dark humour of the original scene, the memes wouldn't be funny.

Everything about this scene is just so masterfully done by everyone involved, extra so for Hitler's actor. Ganz's performance is pure genius. Probably the best performance of a historical character ever put on film. I saw Downfall in the theatre. Ganz's explosions of rage were terrifying to experience - I could feel the fear in the audience. It was a devastating experience and is a brilliant film.
@GlennDavey
@GlennDavey 2 жыл бұрын
Reading up on Ganz's approach, he said he never even came close to understanding the man, he just worked out each scene like he would any other in his normal acting formula and did the best job he could. But he doesn't understand the overall mindset, just able to break down individual emotions and play them as he would any other character. And that says a lot about how professional the man was. Nobody could really understand Hitler, so to play him so well, is the mark of an experienced thespian

@@Agent1W, Downfall should be re-released in theatres because the big screen impact og Ganz's perfect performance and the overall devastating power of this film takes it to a new level that a tv or laptop screen just can't do justice to.
