For those wondering, if you pause at 1:44, the band members (L-R) are backing vocalists Jenny "Bucky" Soule and Gloria "Porky" Granola, bassist/songwriter (the late) Walter Becker, lead vocalist/songwriter Donald Fagen, drummer/backing vocalist (the late) Jim Hodder, percussionist/backing vocalist Royce Jones, guitarist Denny Dias (rhymes with bias) and lead guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. This same lineup would appear in November 1973 on "American Bandstand," lip-synching to the 45-single recording of "My Old School." When they toured in 1974 to promote their 3rd album, "Pretzel Logic," they replaced Jenny and Gloria with backing vocalist and keyboardist Michael McDonald and added a 2nd drummer, the late-great Jeff Porcaro. Check out blonde vocalist Gloria (Giano) Granola six years later when she appeared with her husband (Dodgers catcher Steve Yeager) on a 1979 episode of the TV game show "Family Feud" (available on KZbin).

Don't you just feel so sorry for today's kids who believe that the hits they are listening to are actually valid music? I tried listening to some Taylor Swift recently to see what the hubbub was about. I tried four songs and the longest I could hang on was about 30 seconds. Absolute crap. Nice girl, but it's such absolute manufactured, corporate pablum. So so sad. I appreciate more every day the music we had when we were young.

Indeed! We '70s kids had Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Christine McVie & Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt in her prime, ie songwriter and singers with substance and real music played by talented musicians...I like Taylor Swift as a person, her authenticity, and admire the way she is in control of how she plays the show business game but her songs are like those pieces of candy in the box with the sorta fake waxy feel & no real taste to them. Making boys hearts go pitter pat & being worth a billion $ doesn't mean you're a good musician, it means you're a successfully marketed product. I pity tha' kids of today!

While I'm convinced the director must have thought that Steely Dan was the two ladies, while the gents were just some backing band, it's a killer performance, and lo-and-behold it's drummer Jim Hodder with the ear-splitting scream at the end of the song (here, at 3:36 .) Thanks for letting this one out of the time capsule, Midnight Special!

My wife and I owe "The Midnight Special" big time for showing us early on that Steely Dan was one of the best live bands on the planet. After watching their two appearances on the show in Feb. and Aug. of 1973, we gladly drove 90 miles one way to see them in concert at the U. of Toledo on Sunday April 21, 1974. We call it the concert of our lives, because they didn't tour again until Aug. of 1993. Sadly, by that time, their early drummers Jim Hodder and Jeff Porcaro had both passed on way too soon.
@notferris

I saw them on that same tour...North Central College in Naperville, IL. By then Michael McDonald was playing backup keyboards, but not singing any leads. Funny thing...I actually came to see the opener (Madura).
@andyinoregon
@andyinoregon Жыл бұрын
@@notferris I'm sure that was the case with a lot of fans on that tour. Before they played Toledo, they were the opening act in Pittsburgh and at Ohio State U. for The Beach Boys. In Toledo the French rock band Les Variations opened, and the night before in Cleveland it was Sammy Hagar's band Montrose.

Very cool you got to see the original Steely Dan band live. I was 13-14 those years, watched the Midnight Special religiously, and was already a SD fan,but too young to go to concerts. Thankfully I was there in 1993 when they restarted touring and about 20 shows after that from 1993>the pandemic. RIP Walter.

Love the backing vocalists here and a brief glimpse of drummer Jim Hodder, no mean vocalist himself. Thanks for sharing, really enjoyed it.

After watching their Feb. 9th and August 31st of 1973 performances on "The Midnight Special," my wife and I paid $4.50 each for advance tickets to see Steely Dan at the U. of Toledo on Sunday April 21, 1974. No internet back then, so we didn't know that backing vocalists Jenny and Gloria weren't part of the "Pretzel Logic" tour until the band took the stage. The one performer we had seen in concert before was their 2nd drummer, Jeff Porcaro, when he toured with Sonny & Cher and played Fort Wayne, Indiana's Memorial Coliseum on Sunday March 19, 1972. He was still just 17 years old when we first saw him in '72.
