It’s a loss they never made a movie version with Lansbury in this role. This is the closest we’ll ever get.

She. Is. Wonderful. This is just so smooth, so in-character, so wistful and indignant and yet always poised and classy and dignified.

Obviously this is a good performance....but I've never been drawn to this song, personally. (Maybe if it were sung in full voice there would be more sweep to it? Though that wouldn't match the character.) I've just never liked it, yet it's so revered : (

There are prettier, stronger songs, even within the same production. This song is isn't revered because it's good MUSICALLY, necessarily; but it's distinctive because aren't a lot of songs that an 85-year-old can sing better than a 20-year-old, or a 40-year-old, 50-year-old. Seriously, imagine Charlotte Church singing this song, or the Julie Andrews from 60 years ago. They'd be all voice and no substance. The purpose of this song wasn't to be a good song in and of itself; it was meant to be a vehicle through which the personality of the singer is conveyed. This song is specifically written for an old woman to sing and just sounds wrong when a younger woman tries. Further, as always with Stephen Sondheim, the melody does what the lyrics are doing: pining after days gone, lamenting at how things changed, all with a very sardonic and wry twist. It is a character song and a GOOD character song, and people like it because it's so fun and unique.
