I actually just ran into a flat-earther the other day. I was picking my son up from school and I noticed that he was playing with a kid and the kid's mom was there, so we let them play and got to talking. Our conversation didn't last for too long though. It quickly escalated into an argument, and it ended with her grabbing her son and storming off to her car, while my son and I looked on in confusion. Turns out she's an anti-vaccer, and we got to arguing over that. She called me a gullible sheep that would believe in anything that the government and scientists claims to be true. Then she literally said "I bet you're one of those lemming round-earthers too"! A grown-up, college educated, employeed, mother actually said that to me. She rolled her eyes, shook her head, and responded sarcastically and rudely to me whenever I brought up actual facts that prove the earth to be spherical, and vaccinations to be healthy. She ended the conversation by loudly screaming at me to "WAKE UP"!! I honestly thought that these people were just trolling on the internet, but I just learned the hard way that they do indeed exist. They actually believe that the sun and moon are under a large dome that covers the disc-shaped earth. I imagine it looks like a giant snow-globe from God's point of view. (And now I'm wondering if flat-earthers are predominantly religious, or if they're atheists?) Her explanation of gravity was her funniest argument, and it's what ended our conversation. According to her, gravity is apparently the result of a constant force of "universal acceleration" that forever accelerates the snow-globe, flat-earth upwards at a constant rate of acceleration. That's why we feel a downward force acting on us at all times, and we mistake it for gravity as a result. When I asked what caused this "universal acceleration force", and why the snow-globe, flat-earth hasn't accelerated faster than the speed of light yet, she stormed off. I guess my laughing didn't help. I only wish that I had it on camera. It would have been funny to have that interaction recorded. Plus then I'd have her obnoxious, "WAKE UP", scream recorded. I could use it as my son's alarm tone, as he has trouble waking up in the mornings. EDIT: This exchange happened before the coof and when I said this woman was against vaccination I meant it in the Jenny McCarthy sense. She believed that vaccinating your children against things like the measles would somehow turn them autistic. This had nothing to do with the 'rona as it wasn't even a thing at the time.

The fact that the hitter knows what's coming makes it that much cooler. The things big league pitchers can make a baseball do is like magic.
@dj3114 Жыл бұрын
In reality though, if a true pro batter knows ahead of time what's coming, it would be a slammer. It's the only thing that makes this scene unrealistic. It's why pro and college pitchers have a sleeve (in today's game) so they know what to throw to what players based on their known weaknesses.

This is a great scene in so many ways. A lot of people have commented that this movie was made by people who well and truly love baseball. I'm inclined to agree. But there is so much more to this scene besides a quick tryout. The batter has been nothing but a show off throughout the movie, claiming he's God's gift to baseball. Meanwhile, Rigo is soft spoken and extremely modest. He plays because he loves it and honestly never thought about becoming a pro player. Honestly, that is what makes a great player. They don't care about money, fame, or endorsements. They care about playing the game and having fun. I love the fact that Rigo is the one to expose his weakness and (not literally) knock him on his ass. After being teased or bullied, it's very satisfying to see this kind of payback.
@bobdole49162 жыл бұрын
I think being like Rigo is would make you a good person, but it doesn't really affect how good or bad you are. For example, Barry Bonds had an absolutely massive ego and could be a real jerk about it too. In an interview during his playing days a reporter brought up how arrogant people thought he was and Bonds said, "I'm not arrogant, I'm good!" He was a lot of fun to watch, but man was he a grade A prick.

My great uncle pitched for the Newark Bears back in the 1940's. He said he'd ride his bike to the stadium. He'd sometimes pitch a double header and win both games. His pitch was a fork ball. I remember the space between his index and middle finger was like the space between the index and ring on most people. He wanted to go pro, but got injured in WWII. He was a nice man, gave me pointers on pitching when I was in high school.
@DrClawizdead5 жыл бұрын
This guy knows what's coming and still can't get a hit in five pitches? He has no business playing pro ball.
@charlieodom91075 жыл бұрын
I can tell you from experience, it isn't that easy. I pitched a tournament where the team just absolutely crushed our fastest pitcher the first game. Score was 18-1 and we were mercy ruled out in the 4th inning. The second time we played that team...I pitched and threw literally nothing but curve balls. We still lost, but the score was a much more manageable 2-1. It was in that game I realized that I had actual potential to become a decent pitcher, and ended up getting an award at the end of the tournament for that game. You have to know how to hit a curve, and when it comes to professionals...they can move the ball in some magnificent ways which make it all but impossible to hit consistently. Have you ever tried to hit a curve ball from a really good pitcher?
@charlieodom91075 жыл бұрын
@Kunth well...since it was the final in a tournament...I would say they were not playing anything but their best. Who goes into a tournament final thinking anything but put your best out there?
@theamphibiousbean52855 жыл бұрын
Charlie Odom if this guy it’s supposedly the braves #1 prospect, if he knows for sure it’ll be a fastball the ball should be at the very least into the outfield
@charlieodom91075 жыл бұрын
@@theamphibiousbean5285 yes he should! He should also be able to at least hit a curve ball when he knows it is coming. I'm not saying crush it, just make ANY contact at all! Foul ball, dribbler to the 3rd baseman, anything. The point of the movie is made well, and is compounded by the fact that she brings in a good no name pitcher, but this guy was really made a fool of in this scenario. Having done the same thing to batters in a tournament, I can honestly say I know how the poor cocky guy feels. I felt like the best pitcher in the world that day, and had an entire tournament of people watching batter after batter strike out. I was well known for my curve ball and since I didn't have a fast arm, relied on it and accuracy heavily. The team we lost to in that final went on to win multiple multistate tournaments that year, and had my parents had the money, I would have been playing with them. Hell, I went to school with almost all of them and grew up competing with them on a regular basis.

When you do know something about baseball that curve doesn’t look like much of a curve, from the way he threw it to the way it traveled...it was a little off speed and maybe did break a little but hard to tell from the angle. If they were trying to illustrate him having a wicked curve, they failed miserably. There are little league pitchers these days who could run that fake baseball player holding a bat out of the box and end up catching the inside corner. That’s what they should have shown,

Wtf are you talking about? When they showed in SLOW MOTION, not full speed like you would see in person, it started at his chest and dropped 2-3 inches below the zone. “I know the curve” move around bro. Fastballs also have break, they don’t just travel in straight lines most of the time they start and end when their thrown most likely going to end up anywhere within a circle well thrown nonetheless. @Douglas Heeren A fastball to the head is a dick move. The ribs, hip, legs I have no problem. A fastball to the head could kill someone, or cause serious injury to the brain. If a pitcher throws at a batter's head, he should be allowed to take a bat to that pitcher's head. A pitcher thinks he "owns" the plate, don't crowd it. Okay, a batter, then, "owns" the batter's box, don't throw in it...
