I had 3 German Shepherds in my life. But when they started breeding them like this, I was done. I think it’s disgraceful what they have done to these beautiful dogs. They are so disfigured. No matter what the breeders of them say. Your training is perfect as far as I’m concerned. I love watching your videos.

Hot take: it isn't really the AKC, it is the national/parent breed club that writes the breed standard and submits it to the AKC. Then in Specialty shows (only GSDs shown) judges who are breeders of GSDs put up what they like or what is currently "correct", which in the case of the GSD, is what you see in this video. The same thing has happened to the Labrador. Many of the "English Chubbies" Stonnie has on this channel are very moderate compared to some of the lumbering, giant-headed, oversized dogs with lips and face more like a Mastiff than a Labrador that some insist is breed correct. Humans almost universally take things to extremes and both "ends" of the Labrador spectrum are no exception, nor is the GSD. One thing that is certain: the owner of this dog loves him just like the rest of us love ours. :)

The authoritative breed club for GSD is Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV) e.V., ie, the German club. According to their standard, the GSD is supposed to be a medium sized (males up to maximum 40 Kg, which is 88 lbs), active and with a calm disposition compatible with people and other animals. Clearly, poor Maverick does not meet that standard. He is having a hard time walking at 5 months old, and he looks like he is going to be a very big dog, much bigger than the SV standard, which will stress his back end even more. Old photos of Hektor/Horhand (the grand pappy of the breed) look more like a modern day Belgian Shepherd than like Maverick. And, photos of modern German dogs on the SV website do not look like Maverick either. I had an East German line GSD at one time and had idiots argue with me that she wasn’t a real GSD, presumably because she wasn’t deformed like AKC dogs are. Whether it’s the AKC or the North American club, they have totally messed up a great breed.

Right on time, most trainers won't talk about GSD with other dogs and children. Training at a early age for all dogs means success for the dog and family. The dog must learn how to live with us, not the other way around. Thanks for the video.

My GSD is a hybrid, a cross between a working line and showline. He is around 110 lbs, and was about as Klutzy as it gets until he turned about 18 months. Now when he moves it is like poetry in motion, an absolute beautiful dog, and very athletic (Also a big goof, but still can be very protective). I have to keep reminding myself he is a GSD. Train! Train! Train! everyday. P.S. I do wish they would not emphasize that angled back in the showline - I understand it can cause some problems as they get older. A GSD does not need that sloped back, they are a Gorgeous dog when their back is straight. Plus, don't forget it is their personality that makes them stand out. Ryker is my first GSD, and probably my last dog. All I can say is I wish I could have owned one my whole life. Best dog I have ever had. Learned a lot from all your videos Stonnie, It helped me to make him the dog he is. Thank you.

We got a GSD mix (her mom was a pure GSD, working line I think) from the rescue when she was a "teen" and she's a fantastic family dog but lacking lots of socialization. She was also my first dog and it took me some time to figure out that exposure and socialization is what her training really needs to focus on (with the help from an awesome trainer at Petco actually and Stonnie, of course). She's incredibly smart and learns commands and patterns in no time but she's also very anxious/low confidence and needs lots of positive reinforcement when out and about. We made some awesome progress with her in the last year in how she responds to strangers and new environments but after learning so much more about the breed and from Ronnie I know she'll never be the most "social" dog - and just understanding that has helped so much. I love her so incredibly much and I'm very thankful for awesome trainers like Stonnie who really educate people on what it means to be a dog owner, and setting your dog up for success. I'd love to get Stonnie's take on training "older" pups (past the puppy stage) and, if he has worked with a couple, what his experience was when it comes to socializing them at an older age.

Same here, Maura. We have a sweet West German showline GSD who has a much straighter back and is very athletic. We have over 150 acres with numerous trails, and we go on daily hikes and "sniff" adventures to see what critters have been wandering around our property. She is not aggressive in the least and loves people. I've had English Shepherds who were nippy and much more aggressive. I do wish the angulation they're breeding into GSD's weren't so extreme.

The Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV) e.V. does not allow dogs like Maverick to be bred and registered. They seem to care about the dogs’ health and utility. The photos of champions on their website doe not have the ridiculous angulation that is seen in the US dogs. The SV website says: “Too many dog breeds have almost been destroyed in the last hundred years through unrestrained reproduction. The quality principle is therefore paramount for the SV.” I suspect that they were looking at the USA when they wrote that!

This is a great video! I have a 10 month old WGSL GSD. He is my service dog in training, and I couldn't be happier with him. You aren't wrong about the German Shepherd community being fiercly entrenched in their opinions. The pedigree area of German Shepherd Forum is wild! I recognize my dog's genetic predisposition to some health info just based on the fact that he's showline. His parents are imports from Germany, and all the hip and elbow measurements are sound. We work hard every day, and have almost overcome his barking at little dogs phase. And new owners should be aware of how big and powerful these pups become. (They grow so darn fast!) Yesterday, we were doing bitework and I took a phone call and lost focus. I got a bloody bite to the wrist (the one holding the leather). 100% my fault . I was ready for him to bite when my phone rang. And how cute are the other dogs following Maverick on the structures!

It helps of course that I'm a retired teacher, so I am with my dogs 24/7. (also have a 16yr old Boston t./ pug mix). So my reactive GS has a canine friend. She now seems just curious and frustrated on the leash to meet other dogs, as opposed to her earlier aggressive outbursts which seemed she was wanting to be ripping their heads off! But I value your warning comment on this video about GS reps with "small fuzzy" dogs. It seems to prove true with mine. Its the main trigger for her. ❤ your channel! Thank you!!!

We are being respectful to the dog and we are putting down the breeder. Indeed, Maverick needs to grow into his body. But the breeder purposely breeding extreme over angulation in the hind quarter and the roached back is so detrimental to the dog it does not look beautiful, it is not functional, and it does not serve the original purpose of this breed. You can find it. I would probably encourage you to look for the Eastern line German Shepherds because they are more laid-back than the Czech or west German working lines. Whatever you do, make sure you're going to a good breeder that tests hips and elbows and also tests temperaments and let them know exactly what you're looking for and they will pick out the puppy for you from a litter

i watched this video for 1:32 minutes. i cant watch that extreme slanty back anymore- all this nonsense of slanty back started in 1930s when a large GS dog with slanty back won championship in Europe. Dog intended for serious work is been reduced to such awful mobility due to poor breeding practices aimed at just a perception of slanty back as good looks. FYI- in anz nearly 50% of show GSD's end with Hip and bone disease. Hip disease of dragging feet as dog ages has become synonymous with GSD. There is a movement now to breed showline gsds with straight backs to overcome these health issues.

Great video. The only benefit I see to showline dogs (former working dogs) is that the owner gets the work-look without the training challenges of a real working line dog. Is it worth it? I'd still be against breeding show dogs from working dogs due to the many medical defects that come with that. If you want a docile lap dog, there are many other options out there. But humans tend to prioritize looks over genetics and character AND whether they are equipped to handle those characteristics.

With all of the talk going around concerning American bred German Shepherds being more apt to hip problems than the working lines from Germany, I don't know that I'd be willing to risk the need for a lot of high medical bills associated with the breed these days. They used to be a wonderful dog, but who can afford spending thousands of dollars and still be rolling the dice on whether or not you get a healthy dog? Don't get me wrong, I've always admired the breed, the level of intelligence they can display. My parents had an amazing one before I was born and grew up wishing I could have one too. I just can't trust the path the American breeders have taken this dog.

Check Del Cono Sur. The “experts” in comments who trash the show lines don’t seem to realize this conformation has been around a long time, plenty of OFA certified hips and elbows, (yes, and the terrible backyard bred versions) plenty of IGP champions who outwork and outperform the so called, perfect, better, “working line” German shepherds. This pup looks a little lethargic today, my boy is a ball of energy, has a perfect gait (slow motion capture is amazing on the modern phones!) and runs like a demon. Also, ppl say “American bred” but reputable breeders take dogs from all over the world, hopefully with certified hips and elbows, my boy has a Hungarian/Russian mother, and an Argentinian father, with IGP titles up and down both lines. He shows talent in scent work, and also bite work, and is only 23-24 weeks old..this is just like anything else, you have to do your homework. You can get scammed into buying a terrible working line dog just as easily as a terrible show line dog..

Thank you Stonnie for telling me what's up with that, first place i heard that german shepards are actually notorious for not liking these small dogs. I did something irresponsible and let my german shepard on a leash get close to the little fluffy dog and all the gsd did is just stand over her and sort of assert dominance. They are both females. I have this enclosure where i let my german shepherd run around free, and i have been thinking of getting the little dog inside while shepard is off leash in hopes of getting them to become friends, is this stupid or? The shepard is not aggressive, she's a really nice girl, but of course when she does see the fluffy one, she gets excited. It's much better now then it used to be, i remember when i first got the gsd, the gsd would bark and foam at the mouth when she saw the fluffy one. I hope to get your opinion, but anybody's opinion is highly appreciated. Cheers

After I saw this video last night, it occurred to me what the GSD community is like. When I was a little girl, I was a groom at a stable that produced world champion Tenessee Walking Horses. I entered the showring for the first time at about 8 years old, with my boots stuffed in wrapped stirrups and my heels only kicking the sides of the saddle on a huge gelding named 'The Jolly Pirate'. I was in love. A year later, I saw for the first time what was happening to my beloved horses behind the scenes. Pirate was in a training session of some kind, and reared up and broke his neck on the wall of the ring and died there in the dirt. I was devastated. As I got older, I was given more responsibility with the boarded horses. Their owners would come sweeping in just as I would lead their horses out of the cross ties, all tacked up. The reins were again handed to me after their ride, and I would walk them dry, talking to them the whole time. I thought the owners were crazy to not take part in the care of their horses. I was the lucky one who got the moments. But soon I started paying attention to the training. I would be sent scampering to the tack room to get hoof chains when I was no bigger than your daughter, and I would follow orders and wrap their fetlocks in the acidic mixture that made the exaggerated 'big lick' motion. I saw tails being broken and soring that never ended. I finally declared that I would only ride lite-shod plantation with a focus on equitation. But by 17, I realized that I couldn't support the industry any longer. It was a betrayal to the horses I loved. One day I left and never went back. I'm new to the GSD community, but I think the extreme angulation of the American showline is like what was happening to those Walkers. My pup is European showline, and he has a much straighter back. But maybe there is something about the dogs' slick names that reminded me of the horses I still miss. Time will tell what happens with my Zeus, but I am happy that we were matched, and I love him to pieces.

Show line breeders won’t (the reputable ones) breed dogs that are not certified free of hips and elbow problems. If you’ve had non show line dogs (which are supposedly so much better than show line) with these problems, then there is a big problem with how they were bred, or the fact they should never have been bred at all.

That poor girl that visited France…. Yes people shouldn’t get in a dog’s face but she’s a child. I completely agree with Stonnie… if your dog can’t be trusted they shouldn’t go out in public and should be muzzled while traveling to vet, etc. The little girl is scarred for life.

I love your videos! My dogs do too. They always stare at the TV screen when you whistle, or the dogs are playing 😂. One of these days you should do a video on English Shepherds! If you need one for the video, you can use mine. I'm sure they'd give you a lot to talk about! Plus they LOVE running around in the woods!

Just a PSA. Y’all there is more than just 2 lines of GSD if we’re deep diving. SL dogs in general can live healthy long lives w no hip issues too. Be vigilant about what breeder you go to as you would with any dog. SL dogs are much better for most people.

Stuff like this makes me confused as to why the AKC has standards like this. Why have standards that are horrible for the dogs health? Does anyone know what the justification is?

Stony would you do a video comparing how line to working German Shepard. I feel bad for this puppy, it seems that breeders have bred them into a charature of a real dog. I have owned Dobermans for a long time and even as puppies the walk and run better thas that dog.

One of the far too many worst examples of negative human effect on breeding for percieved cosmetic benefit. I wish this dog a long and happy life but it breaks my heart how this breeding increases his potential for hip & back problems. I appreciate he's young yet but he almost looks disabled on the small challenges course because he is inclinded to walk on his 'hinds' rather than his foot pads! What is the dog world coming to !!

It should be illegal to breed any breed to attain a deformed back end structure like that . They have tightened laws in the uk when breeding smaller deformed dogs to get more deformed dogs .( purebred kc )

I have a German shepherd guide dog. She certainly does not have the AKC show dog characteristics. Thank God. Guide dog schools. Do not use those lines because the dogs cannot hold up to training or work. It is criminal what the AKC is doing to the German Shepherd. people have asked if my dog is a full-blooded German Shepherd. They say her back is straight, why? I say because she is bred for functionality and health. Unlike the AKC dogs.

GSD's are pretty overbred right now in the US and although they have the potential to be great dogs, they're probably not a good pick for a beginner. They need so much to be a balanced happy animal. You do see boneheads trying to fix their neurosis because the adoptor just didn't understand what they were signing up for. 😢

I manage a dog daycare/longstay kennel and German Shepherds are probably in the top 5 dog breeds that we see. There are a few very fine ones, but in general, Based on what I see, I would never purchase one from a local breeder. They are all extremely anxious.

This guy is very curious. On one hand, he appears to have an ability to get an overly fearful/aggressive dog to calm down and realize that human contact isn't a bad thing, and seems to have some well behaved/trained dogs of his own... but on the other hand, are there REALLY that many messed up dogs out there? Well, as many messed up people in the world, yes there could be. What I wanna know is, who dresses this guy, and WHY that overall look?
@RingoTheGSP Жыл бұрын
Working line all the way, better put together for athletic ability and health. Have you seen the Lycan Shepherd? Amazing dogs. No hate here, I really like GSD's, just sad to see how we've genetically manipulated dogs for looks rather than health/stability.
@mpspuij Жыл бұрын
It is sad that a good working dog is turned into a sad show dog by breeders just for winning a show. It is a Shepherd, a work dog..... that says enough. It turned into a sick breed with many hip problems.
@c1gar Жыл бұрын
Do we think this is the type of breed that requires following the 5 minute of life rule?
@nogames8982 Жыл бұрын
Why do they insist on breeding dogs that are not going to be functional? It is so sad. They say they do it for luxe, it's not even attractive. It's awful makes me sick.
@DTFarms3 Жыл бұрын
There are really four types of GSD's. Working line, American/Canadian showline, West German showline (what we see in this video and what you will see in most of the world for showlines), and pet/backyard breeder GSD's (this is where you'll see most of the problems both temperament and health). While I don't like the conformation on this puppy (too roached for me and doesn't have stamina), what you see with this dog does not tell you anything about hip quality and I WISH people would get that through their heads. What non-educated people refer to as a "straight back" has nothing to do with hips and is no indication of health or good breeding. Hip quality can only be seen via x-ray. It's the backyard breeder who is not health or temperament testing and breeding accordingly that is truly destroying the breed. Are there showlines bred to unnecessary extremes out there? Of course, and it is unfortunate. But I definitely wouldn't lump them all together. My West German showline has the looks and conformation, herding instinct, works like a working line when I ask her to, and is social outside of the house. Really could not ask for more in a dog.
@Vincent_Boogaloo9 ай бұрын
well said, this is why the west german show line is in many ways the perfect in-between for GSD's.

I have met so many different German shepherds...very big ones, medium size, and a slim all black one. The all black one was very personable friendly gentle and lives chasing motorcycles for fun. He would run off and then return to the door where he ran off at. A different German shepherd would not stop bark at me any tkme I was in my backyard...eating a salad or whatever. It was so weird how he made me feel like a criminal for eating on my own patio. Poor dog. He was obviously poorly socialized if at all. Another female German shepherd I met at a park and she lived li Ed loved my border collie. My.b.c. would bark and run her up and down yhe park fence. That German shepherd was so sad to see my b.c. leave for the night. She is obviously extremely lonely and extremely unstimulated. Her owner just stared at her phone all the time instead of engaging her, playing with her, or even getting her a play friend. If she would have opened the gate I know her desperate dog would have cheerfully hoped in my car and left with us. We met a Doberman pit bull husky and golden retriever who responded that way too. The only issue from my pack is that my other dog has a strict inner circle pack mentality. I would definitely need a little time to get her used to a new dog in our car. That's only if the owner ever decided to let their dog follow us.
