Actually, you can bribe the sheriff to search another player's bag. It explicitly says so in the rules. Once they take the bribe, they must do what you asked them

What is the point of bribing the sheriff if you are innocent? A couple of times, Duncan and Lewis bribed him even though they were innocent, but surely you have more to gain by just saying you have no contraband? I think (if I heard it properly) they might be trying to bait out the sheriff by doing that and having him still search their stuff, but they still lose their bribe.

You need to honour deals if they can be completed the same round (including opening other people's bags if it's the same round, Duncan) and if you have an undeclared legal good then that is also confiscated along with any contraband (you just can't declare contraband).

Duncan, I feel you. After I went to England I literally spent a month or so afterwards running around with 20 Euro and A LOT of pounds. Even worse, a lot of it was in coins so I could not exchange it in Germany.
