Florence + The Machine - You've Got The Love 2008
'The Source Feat. Candi Stanton - You Got The Love (New Voyager Mix)'
Sex & The City and Layer Cake and Sky Sports Championship coverage
Before the New Voyager MIX came, The Source Feat. Candi Stanton - You Got The Love released officially in 1991... But it predates that... This version was created by a London DJ by the name of Eren Abdullah in 1989, we think... He combined two tracks... The music, like the instrumental backing track of a record called 'Your Love' which we'll talk more about in a moment... And the vocals from 'Candi Staton - You Got The Love' It was pressed to vinyl by British DJ & Producer John Turelove who got clearance for the vocals and re-recored all the elements... He was also responsible for the New Voyager Mix we were just talking about...
Bryan Walton AKA Jamie Principle was a pioneer of House Music, so called because of the Warehouse nightclub in which it was being played in Chicago by Frankie Knuckles, we'll come back to him in a second... Jamie Principle wrote lyrics to a track called Your Love about his then girlfriend Lisa Harris... This is where the story can get a bit muddy... the track by Jamie was given to Frankie Knuckles, who liked it and added some production, basically drums & precision.
Later another DJ called Mark 'Hot Rod' Trollan added what I would say are the most recognisable musical elements of the track, the Synth into and bassline! Which he is said to have sampled from another track called - 'Electra - Feels Good' Anyway what he added made it the 'Your Love' which was then released in 1986 as Jamie Principle and later in 1987 on Trax Records as Frankie Knuckles with Jamie Principle listed as a writer... I told you it was messy mate! Just understanding the parts that came together to make this record and who actually created them is mind boggling... So, Jamie Principle, Franke Knuckles and others were involved in creating this track - Your Love
Candi Staton, born in Alabama in 1940 is a four time Grammy Award nominee, singer/songwriter known of course for You Got The Love but also had a massive hit in 1976 with 'Young Hearts Run Free'
Candi was chilling in Bahamas, as you do... Her career was quieter, a decade on from 'Young Heats Run Free' when she bumped into stand up comedian Dick Gregory. A successful stand up comedian who took aim at racism and bigotry in the US he went to to be a huge part of the civil rights movement and even ran for President in 1968 as a write in candidate. He also ran a diet plan business. In 1986 he's looking to create a video advert for his dieting business, he's in the Bahamas and asks Candi Staton if she's like to get involved! The track was written by a songwriting team known as The Source, Anthony Stephens, Arnecia Harris & John Bellamy, they wrote it, Candi sung it...

An email sent to us from John Truelove - Hi Felix Thanks so much for this. Been moving house and office so it's taken a little while to get back to you What a comprehensive and well researched job you did! I learned some things I didn’t already know (always welcome) and was given pause for thought at several points The only bit you where you went slightly off course was about the release of the first bootleg mix, which I produced (and as you correctly identified, Eren mixed). We used some really basic borrowed equipment in a freezing cold room at the top of a squatted building with water leaking through the roof and tarpaulins and buckets strategically placed above and between the tape machines and turntables while Eren laboriously spun small chunks of the Candi Staton vocal, section by section, from vinyl onto 8 track ½ inch tape (sampling not yet an option then) where we had already recorded on one track Jamie Principle’s Your Love (though we knew it as Frankie Knuckles’ record at the time). I then pressed up that bootleg (the so-called Love/Rock Bootleg) and trawled round the country in my beaten up Ford Sierra selling it to shops out of my boot, until, some 9 months later, I blagged a proper studio (called Sam Therapy) and with the help of an engineer called Colin James, recreated the Jamie Principle parts and laid the full quality Candi Staton vocal over the top. I had already in the summer of 1990, been to Chicago and got Jamie's consent and blessing, and, most importantly his explanation of how, and with which machines, he had made all the key sounds in his track. While in the Windy City I had also managed to obtain the original multi-track tape of the Candi vocal, having licensed the exclusive master rights from Anthony Stephens and John Bellamy, the guys who had respectively written and produced the first Candi recording for the diet video. I had been travelling around Britain all year, seeing with my own eyes the record flying off the shelves at record shops from Liverpool to Edinburgh, Glasgow to Newcastle to Birmingham to Manchester and many points in between, and also witnessing the damage it was doing to dancefloors in most of those places (it would have been rude not to have checked out their local nightclubs when I was I there!). Despite all this I was unable to find a label who was the slightest bit interested in signing the record. Most just sniffed at it and said, "well it's just two records mixed together isn’t it?!". So I decided to release the record myself, a pretty rare occurrence in those days. However just as I was gearing up to do my own formal release through an amenable distributor, a chance introduction by Craig Daniels, the manager of the legendary shop, Trax Records (no relation whatsoever to the Chicago label) to James Horrocks (formerly of Rhythm King Records, home to S-Express and Bomb The Bass among others) led to me striking a deal for You Got The Love to be the first release on his newly formed React Records. In the meantime, I got wind that the Trax Records label, had heard of the huge underground success the bootleg was achieving in UK, and were preparing their own cover version of You Got The Love over "Frankie Knuckles' Your Love" (the twisted story of which you already know). So I strung along the owner Larry Sherman (who I had also visited at his notorious and unbelievably grubby record plant while in Chicago the previous summer) with the idea that we would do a release jointly, with me producing the Trax-owned recording of Your Love under the Candi Staton vocals that I had acquired. I managed to keep up the pretence of us working together just long enough to get my fully-cleared release out on React a couple of weeks ahead of Trax's (notably inferior) version. At the end of the first week our chart position was just outside the UK top 30 and James's business partner thought it was all over and that we would have no chance of getting on the vital BBC Radio 1 playlist, so he started pulling promotional budget. But against all odds the record climbed the next week to 23. That did not sway the BBC Radio 1 playlist committee however, and to add to our gloom we heard that there were noisy objections from the breakfast time DJ who held considerable sway in the playlist meetings. He was complaining that the vocal and the music were out of key with each other (he was correct, they were!) and that he wouldn’t be seen dead playing the record on the radio. The record continued to climb the chart nonetheless, the next week to 16, and the week after that (when they finally relented and added it to the playlist), and the week after that, finally peaking at #4, at which point the same Radio 1 DJ declared that he loved it and became its biggest supporter (!), keeping it in the playlist for the next few months and ensuring that it was the record that spent the longest time on the Radio 1 playlist that year, finally earning us a coveted silver disk Odd factoid: We were later told that we’d have made it to #2 or even possibly #1 (The Simpsons’ “Do The Bartman” and Madonna’s “Crazy For You” the contenders at the time) if we had opted to release a CD single instead of a cassette, as our third format after 7” and 12” (you were only allowed to release on a maximum of 3 formats in those days to qualify for charts) - but I didn’t even own a CD player yet and had no idea of the small iridescent disk’s growing importance! After all that excitement and once the hubbub had died down, I insisted that the record be deleted, as, after literally living the track every day for a full two years I couldn’t bear hearing it anymore. I put all my energy into making and releasing proper underground techno and what was to become known as hard trance and building up the Truelove Label Collective, the first ever such collective of underground record labels. It was only in 1996, once 5 years had elapsed, that I finally felt inspired to head back into the studio to again tackle Candi's amazing vocal, (to which we retained the rights of course), this time from an entirely new (and musical!) perspective, with what was to become 1997's Now Voyager Mix. We achieved a number 3 chart position this time, and this was the version that legendary TV show Sex And The City chose to underlay the montage closing their last ever episode, and which Florence + The Machine was to cover, note for note, a decade later. In recent years it has been the ultimate honour to hear orchestras, such as Pete Tong and Jules Buckley with his Heritage Orchestra, Hacienda Classical and other performing my Now Voyager arrangement as well as a huge range of vocal covers in all styles from all around the world, the most recent being a Chinese language version for an international clothing brand. Hope that at least some of this is of interest and/or illumination Best regards John

Love it, lads. The Candi Staton version was a staple of house parties back in the mid-late 90s. Dunno if either of these feature samples but Let Me Show You by Camisra was always a great anthem to hear on a night out and He's All I Want by Angel Moon always takes me back to great holidays in Greece and Ibiza.
