Beautiful, I love the gold tooling. I started learning bookbinding last year in June just so I could have a nice copy of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary (it's a traditional Roman Catholic book of hours for the laity (the vowed religious and clergy used, since Vatican II messed it all up, a longer version with all psalms, the Divine Office) this book, while common in the USA, UK, and France, has been entirely out of print here in Brazil since the 1950's) and in December I finished the first prototype. It was rather nice considering it was my first book, and it was functional, which was the most important requirement, but since then I've grown even more fond of bookbinding and now I want it to be a full on prayer book in Portuguese and Latin side by side (I've even included the Akathist to the Theotokos and a prayer rule for the Chotki, both of which I really love even if I don't get to use them enough), and I really want to learn gold tooling (but before that I need to buy or make the tools required, and that'll take a while).

A real labour of love. The gilding inside the cover around the edge (square) of the board is referred to as the Dentelles. I mention that because you said you weren't sure if there was a name.

That’s beautiful. I’ve discovered your channel few days ago and I love it. Thanks for the inspiration. Yesterday I got my binding papers and other materials. Cannot wait to start working 😀

Amazing work. Being new to the craft it always amazes me the many different styles and techniques used. I would be very proud of that piece. Thanks for posting.

This is a lovely book, and such a pleasure to see. I hope you won't mind the slur on your printer, but it deserves a much better text block. The cover design is exceedingly strong, and recalls amongst other things the carpet pages from the Book of Kells.

Lord willing i'll be binding my own psalter soon. All 20 Kathismata ;) I've been meaning to get into bookbinding for a while now. It'll be years before i can make something like this but hey, wish me luck!

The Psalter looks beautiful, Ma'am. How do you maintain the leather so that it will keep its lustre and suppleness?
@AnnesiBindings3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Generally using a book frequently will help to keep it supple as it absorbs the oils from one's hands. There are also leather dressings - although there is conflicting advice on them - but they are usually only needed in exceptional circumstances.

That is really lovely Macrina, thanks for sharing. Do you have a rough estimate of how many hours in total it took to complete? Also, I'd be interested to hear how you dyed those two-tone panels on the leather.
@AnnesiBindings4 жыл бұрын
Thanks John! I'm afraid I didn't keep good track of how long it took. I did work on the cover for perhaps about three days, but it wasn't totally solid. I used spirit dyes as that's all I can get here, but I dilute them quite a bit.

Wonderful work! Was the stylus heated for working in the gold on the geometric pattern on the front and back? Didn't look like a typical 'plug in' foil stylus.
@AnnesiBindings4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! Yes, it was heated. It's a stylus from Dimitri Koutsipetsidis in Greece that a kind friend gave me about a year ago. He doesn't seem to have them on his Etsy shop at present, but he discusses them more here: koutsipetsidis.wordpress.com/2012/03/07/brass-stylus-tools-%ce%b3%cf%81%ce%b1%cf%86%ce%af%ce%b4%ce%b5%cf%82-%ce%b2%ce%b9%ce%b2%ce%bb%ce%b9%ce%bf%ce%b4%ce%b5%cf%83%ce%af%ce%b1%cf%82-%ce%b1%cf%80%cf%8c-%ce%bc%cf%80%cf%81%ce%bf%cf%8d%cf%84/ Glenn Malkin also had a video a while ago in which he demonstrated this way of working more and said that one can also make on'es own stylus. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHrHd2eIrJetq80

What translation of the book of psalms are you using?
@AnnesiBindings4 жыл бұрын
It's the translation by Fr Lazarus Moore, Jim. However, I've changed the forms of address to You / Your, rather than Thee / Thou.
