Sorry this is probably a very dumb question, but what happens if you glue the spine of the block to the book case? I honestly thought you would glue all sides 😬
@AnnesiBindingsКүн бұрын
That is only done for certain forms of traditional binding when using leather. With case binding, the structure is designed so that the spine can move freely, separate from the cover. If they were glued together, the spine of both the cover and the bookblock would become damaged due to the pressure exerted on them by being unable to move. If you are concerned about the spine needing more support, you could consider an Oxford hollow, which I demonstrate in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j3fRaWtngr6ce9Esi=l_q0heydMqkdaxFV

Anyone have an idea on a reasonable page maximum for this method? I study law and most of my PDF reference materials are 200-300 pages per section
@AnnesiBindingsКүн бұрын
@@tjcurran6041 There isn't really a size limit, and I have certainly used this method for bundles a few centimetres thick, although it might be advisable to make sure you fan the pages in both directions. The more crucial issue is how much they are going to be used, and how much wear and tear they'll get. If that's the case, you could consider what I show in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZXYmHaZpsamndUsi=tuCkQFu2x-J2lLiL

I like that texture! I haven't had great success with paste papers so far (I think I didn't use enough paint/my paint wasn't pigmented enough), but next time I have some extra paste I'd like to try this. So I understand - the white paper you fold underneath for the extra support (clever), is that then a waste sheet facing the cover, so the fold faces towards the inside of the book?
@AnnesiBindings11 күн бұрын
Actually, it isn't a waste sheet - in some traditional methods it is, but this is just for case binding, so a waste sheet isn't really needed. Rather, it's glued to the paste down (the side of the endpage that gets glued to the cover), as I find that a thicker pastedown helps to prevent it wrinkling when damp.

Use benzine (Hexane) to remove that clingy brown tape!! Turpentine also works but it lefts residual smell, benzine doesn't, just apply some drops of benzine at the tape edge and wait 1 minute for the paper absorbing the benzine and melting the glue, use pliers to lift the tape's edge and you will see that the tape is loosen and is easily removable now!!! After removing the tape, put the page in a benzine bath to get rid of the impregnated glue that remained!!! ❤️

This video is an answer to our prayers. My wife and I are attempting bookbinding to create Christmas gifts for our children and wondered how to do this on our little home printer which is not duplex. We are on disability retirement and wanted to do something special like a little A5 themed journal with some inspirational thoughts and a few special family photos, all in black and white. Shalom.

That's a lovely idea - I'm glad it was helpful.🙂 Something I forgot to say is that even with a duplex printer, I find it better to flip the pages manually as the back and front tend to align better that way.

Why do you put the paper over the cloth instead of the other way around?
@AnnesiBindingsАй бұрын
That's the traditional way of doing it and how it's almost always done. Thinking about it, I think it may be because this was historically done with leather, which was pared thin at the edge, and would not have been absolutely straight when glued down. A thin sliver could then be trimmed off before gluing the paper over it, but this wouldn't really have worked the other way around. Also, in the case of book cloth, the edges might fray, depending on the book cloth, and gluing the paper over the book cloth avoids that.
@tarzan8575Ай бұрын
@@AnnesiBindings Thank you for your response. I asked another KZbinr if their was a reason for this and instead of telling me the reason he said, "Yes, but I don't think you'll believe me unless you try it yourself." So, thank you very much for giving me an actual answer. I have always thought it was kind of an odd way of doing it as it seems more logical to me to have whatever material your using to cover the spine in a quarter binding cover the paper that's on the boards. Your answers make sense though. I always figured there was a reason but it's been surprisingly difficult to find out what that reason is.
@samuelbarber6585Ай бұрын
@@tarzan8575 another consideration is the book cloth edges could fray over time. The paper covering the cut fabric edge can keep that from happening.

Do you perhaps know where I can get hold of Wibalin paper in South Africa? I have a set of du Maurier's that I thrifted (all in terrible shape) and I'd like to make a little holiday project out of rebinding them all. Alternatively, would fabric be a good enough substitute? Would the process be the same?
@AnnesiBindingsАй бұрын
I have got Wibalin from Graphica before, but not for some years, and I think they may require you to buy a minimum quantity. www.graphica.co.za/ You can certainly use fabric, but it would be best to first back it with paper to make book cloth. I've been intending to do a video on that, but I think there are several KZbin videos on making book cloth - perhaps have a look on the DAS Bookbinding channel.
