It's ironic how most of my favorite movies do this. Off the top of my head I can think of two masterpieces: Memento and Fight Club, both of which use this as a way to drive plot/character in a unique and unexpected way.

Its a great tool! I think of how stories were first told… there was nothing but someone telling it, and the imagination.

Ok but can we talk about your voice over because it's so relaxing 😭

I know it's an obvious choice- but you have to talk about unreliable narrations- I love the way Fight Club utilities it to emphasis the plot twist.

One of my favorite movies that does this too much and not too well is Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) and a movie that did it amazingly is Sin City. Thanks for the great videos!

Technically all stories have someone telling us the story, but the trick is making people forget it's being told to them sometimes, while reminding them at others. Movies and tv are unique in that they don't absolutely require a narrator since they can literally make the audience see and hear whatever the story requires. So I'm trying to figure out how to know if movies and tv should have a narrator. I honestly can't think of a good way to judge. I know it just feels right or wrong, but there has to be a technical reason

Voice overs are good if they actually have a purpose in the narrative and are intelligent

Typically, non-diegetic refers to something not existing in the cannon of the world the character/subject is set in. Something that's simply "offscreen" could very well be considered diegetic, such as a gunshot in a western flick. And easy way to think of it is this: Can the character in the scene hear the sound? If yes, it's diegetic. If no, it's non-diegetic.

Seriously . . . it's over 30 years old, if you were gonna see it you would have already. I guess it's spoilers for you that in The Karate Kid Daniel wins, Sarah Conner escapes the Terminator, Indiana Jones does escape from the Temple of Doom, Darth Vader dies in Return of the Jedi, and Marty and Doc fix their timeline.

Fair point. But, I still hate the narrations or actors speaking out to educate the audience as if they are too dim to understand what is going on.

1. Your voice is soooo soothing and super sexy, do you read audiobooks? 2. I guess it all comes down to how well the narration is written, in Shawshank it works because it's f*****g great
