The red Torana hatchback is an A9X - king of Toranas with 5 litre V8 and improved handling and braking. They were a devastatingly effective racing car in their time.The Bolwell Nagari wasn't really a kit car as most were factory built. They has a Ford 5 litre V8 and backbone chassis like an Elan. Campbell Bolwell worked at Lotus for a while. Also, you will be pleased to know they used a Kimberly/Tasman steering rack. They made 16 convertible versions which must all be worth several houses nowadays.

A rare mistake at 8:54 . Not a Falcon but Fairlane. Australian assembled version of the compact US Fairlane. I think a 1963 FC. Here Falcons only got a V8 in 1967. This is larger and much more expensive than the Aussie 1963 Falcon. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Fairlane_(Australia)#Intermediate_Fairlanes_(1962%E2%80%931965)
@captaccordion
@captaccordion 4 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. They were only referred to in Australia as the compact Fairlane, as our previous and first exposure to the Fairlane name was the huge 1959 American full sized Ford, which later became referred to as the 'Tank' Fairlane. By the time this 1963 model came along, the Fairlane name had been relegated to what Americans viewed as a mid sized car, with the Falcon being a compact car in their eyes. The full sized American Ford in 1963 was the Galaxie.

My dad owned a Sunbeam Rapier for a while, which he bought from our friend and neighbour who had given up driving. It was green like the example here. By the time he obtained the car in the early 1980s, it was several years old, though with fairly low mileage. It had manual transmission, and if I recall a 1700 or 1750 cc engine. The handling characteristics left something to be desired, IMO - I drove the Rapier a fair bit, and often used it for work, at times when my car was being repaired, serviced, etc. My own car at that time was an Escort Estate mark 2, which had wonderful road-holding. If memory serves he changed it for a Honda Civic which was very low-slung. The difference in handling was immense - the Rapier never felt too safe around corners, but by contrast the Civic stuck to the road like superglue, and was truly amazing going around corners at speed. Given that my dad was a VERY fast driver, this was probably just as well...

I should add that my mum owned a Hillman Imp, and my dad had a volvo P1800 S. I was too young to drive when they had these, but I remember hurtling down the A3 in the Volvo at 120 mph. Like I said, my dad was a fast driver... Great video, another broad spectrum of cars on show. Thanks again.

My first car was one of these 12:55 in this colour 2:40. Mine was actually the almost identical CL model in sedan form from 1978. The wagon is the mildly facelifted CM model introduced the same year and finished production in August 1981. Mitsubishi bought Chrysler Australia in mid 1980 and continued Valiant production until it's demise in 81. The CM had a spark control computer that acted like EFI but with a carburettor instead, using various sensors to optimise fuel efficiency and emissions without affecting power. It resulted in remarkable economy for a big six for the time that was lauded by the motoring press. My CL had the 4.0 litre 245 hemi six on duel fuel LPG & Petrol. It was very cheap using LPG. Rust led to it's demise after being my transport between 1995 and 2000. (Edited for spelling and to alter a timing mark).

Never heard of Nagari! Nagari is an aboriginal word meaning "flowing," and the Bolwell Nagari, also known as the Mk VIII, was the company's first full production sports car with 100 coupes and 18 convertibles made. It was manufactured from 1970 to 1974 and became the best known out of the 9 Bolwell car designs: the Mk I-VIII and Ikara.

Not sure how much was manufactured in Australia, although dutues and local content rules would have help push the figure as high as possible. Certainly the Australian Coopers were the first to feature wind-up windows before Britian. We also kept the original suspension (Mark 1?) all the way through production to save retooling, even with the Leyland Clubman nose.

Love your videos, just one correction, you’ve twice mistaken an early 60s compact Ford Fairlane as an early Falcon. The Fairlane compact was a bigger, more expensive car and quite separate. The earliest Falcon in Aus was the XK model of 1960, almost identical appearance to the US version, and very soon started to fall apart on our rough roads. Later versions from XL on were much tougher.

Holden ute at 9:30 was an FB model from 1960. So by this time Holden had truly found thier feet from the 1948 release of the first 48-215 sedan then a ute version in 1951. Followed by the FJ, FE and FC utes. So the FB was the fifth Holden ute version. Holden saved money on this ute by using the back end of the FE and FC rather than tool up new panels for a workhorse. From a time when about 50% of cars sold in Australia were Holdens. The older utes of any make are rare now as they were mostly used commercially and worked very hard. Utes not regarded as collectible for a long time.

That yellow Commodore was actually known as the Opel Commodore on this side of the pond (mainland Europe). Friends of my parents had one, green metallic with black vinyl roof, 2.5 6 cilinder with a 4 speed manual. What a car that was. The Commodore was a hybrid between the Rekord E1 and the Senator A1. Same body as the Rekord E1, but with a Senator A1 front and posh chrome trim around the rear lights and black paint between the rear lights. The Rekord E1 only came with 4 cilinder engines, where the Commodore came with 6 cilinders, as did the Senator A1.

The first generation Holden Commodore had the same size body as in Europe (allowing for the mix-and-match sheetmetal combination) but was extensively strengthened after the first prototype cracked at the firewall in outback testing. I believe Holden's dream of saving development funds through use of an existing body largely evaporated by the time it was deemed suitable for Australia. The smaller size (for Australia) made sense during planning in the wake of the '70s fuel crisis, but the Commodore started to lose ground to the larger Falcon in the early '80s. Second and third generations were larger than their European cousins to better match the Falcon.

The Caddy Eldorado and the Olds Toronado were front wheel drive back in the mid to late 60's. They shoved their 500 cubic inch engines to one side and put a transmission next to them. Chain driven even. Firestone developed special tires for those beasts. The 66/67 Toronados are in my opinion one of GM's better efforts in automobile design - they even had a barrel speedo! Based on the Toronado there was a Jetway 707 - a 3 axle limo eerily similar to a certain Citroen model.

I think the 1966 Olds just went with the little engines of 425cui to start then later only 455cui ! The front drive Eldorado did start a year later with 500cui. As a kid at the time it was notable to me the smallest car motor I came across, the Honda Scamp N360 as well as the largest in the Eldorado were both the then rare front wheel drive. I think the 1966 Toranado styling design was well ahead of the time and inspired many other cars later. As did the Corvair. Hard to think of many recent GM designs doing this.

Quite right! E-types dutifully ignored so we can admire the pretty Corolla KE15/17 and fabulous Bolwell.

E-Types seem 10 a penny at any classic meet. Are they really as rare and exclusive as the owners say they are?

Both Sunbeam Rapiers would have to be very rare private imports. Rootes and Chrysler always concentrated on a few Rootes models that they thought had some volume potential here. The early 60s Alpine may have burnt their fingers. Apart from a Wheels road test of a ladies private import circa 1963, these are the first time I have seen Rapiers in Australia.

Mike Dales - The worst part of the Commodore saga isn't just that Holden stopped making them after the series 2 VF - they (eventually) replaced the VF in 2018 with a "new" Commodore, which is a rebadged version of... ... ... yes, you guessed it, the Vauxhall/ Opel Insignia. Over 2 years Holden sold about 119 of which 117 were dealer cars (my figures might be slightly awry, but you get the picture). BTW by the end of this year, Holden will no longer exist - see kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2XKnYaCotp3i5Y

I have to say that in European conditions the current and previous Vauxhall / Opel Insignias were actually decently underrated cars. But if you are used to rear drive V8 Commodores, I can see why our Aussie friends would turn their nose up at the Insignia based replacement.

Not a Bowell kit car at 5:02. After making earlier model kit cars from the Nagari they were turn key models made in Seaford Victoria from 1970 to 1974. Started with a Ford 302 V8 but after a while the new Ford supplied crates had 351 versions in them causing Bowell to do some redesign work. All very high power to weight. Would be called a mid front engine car today. Coupe and open versions. So good that Peter Warren won the 1975 Australian Tourist Trophy for Production Sports Cars. The Nagari dominated this class in Australia. My cousin had one. His story for high speed was he thought the speedo showed Kph. More detail : kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoXdZHucjpd_q80

Bolwell are still manufacturing composite components for the auto industry, these days they make bonnets and front ends for Kenworth and Iveco trucks. They are now located in Mordialloc only a few KMs from Seaford.

Did you meet any of the Hub Nutters? St. Ives is quite upmarket as a suburb in Sydney. I'd give an eyetooth for a Pagoda Merc in top nick. You're looking at at least six figures in Aussie dollars for one of the later models. The Nagari went like stink being light and powered by either a Ford 302 or 351 V8. Didn't get a good look at it, but that Ford Falcon looked like it was an American one.

They are not just a case of someone shoehorning in a larger engine. :-) 7:20 Datsun 1200 - we didn't get the Sunny nameplate for a fair few years after this came out. 11:26 The Monaro/Kingswood design takes its styling cues from the '72 Pontiac LeMans - and the Kingswood was merely the 4-door version of the Monaro.
