This anime doesn’t even get a fifth of the recognition it actually deserves which is a shame since even though I don’t watch anime as much anymore I always come back to it.

It can't get traction in a medium where the main audience are people into BNHA, Demon Slayer, Mob Pscyho 100, One Punch Man, etc. I wished that more mature shows were produced, but anime is a product before being art, and it's not economically interesting nor safe.

It's rated very high so it is not underappreciated at least, it's definitely not for everyone though. I just started watching this and the first episode is enough to understand its quality, shows like these are extremely rare so i'll be sure to enjoy it thoroughly.

I think first season was better. I didn't find the same beauty in the 2nd Season which I got from the first season. But 2nd Season's op is definitely better than 1st Season's op.

I'd be inclined to agree if not for the last second reveal regarding the truth of the balcony scene. That massively cheapened it to me and somewhat ruins future viewings

@@stygianskies4776 How? It literally ties into the fact that Yotaro was being lied to and pushed away, a major theme of Yakumo's. And the reveal of the truth behind the balcony scene completely adds to Yakumo's own sense of self-destruction. As well as his guilt in feeling he killed them both. Plus it's hinted at happening in the first season as well when Yakumo licks Miyokichi's tears and talks about how his true feelings. There's a harsh cut and the entire scenario becomes so much more like rakugo than it does his actual personal history. Miyokichi went there with the intention of killing Kikuhiko and dying with him, but her plan failed. And Konatsu is responsible for Miyokichi's and Sukeroku's death after that. But Kikuhiko still takes the blame and her hatred, as that ties directly back to the theme of self-destruction. If you think that reveal cheapened the first season, you legitimately didn't get what was so great about the series then lmao

Probably my favorite anime ever. It just hit me too hard. Especially the intros... The second one was too deep, showed me too much of myself. Feeling like you're falling, someone you care for wants to save you, but another you love is opening your soul to the world and baring it to all in a way that it can never heal, even though they're gone. I will always love this anime and the songs that I learned because of it.

Amazing visuals, sound, music and story, a classic and criminally underrated. Shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu deserves to be at the top with titles like Bebop and Evangelion. A true masterpiece. The fact that this show is able to get you invested in a story being told in a story being told in a story is testament to its world class writing.

I just finished watching this anime because I stumbled upon the two openings and I must say... It's an absolute masterpiece, how everything played out, the plot twists OMG, too bad this anime didn't get as much recognition as it should've, it's also a shame that a lot of people wouldn't be able to appreciate it. PS: is there anything that confirms who the real father is? I know it's strongly hinted but... I need proof, I still can't wrap my head around it. PSS: both endings are extremely good as well, everything about this anime is splendid.

For what it's worth, the final guess about the father is only that - a guess. Personally, I don't think Kiku is the father, for two big reasons. 1. One of the show's main themes centred around found family and choosing your own path in life/who you want to emulate. Therefore, Shinnosuke is like Kiku simply because he strives to be. 2. In my opinion, another main theme of the show was Kiku's deep love for Sukeroku.

I don't think Kiku/Yakumo/Bon is the father, just as I don't think he loved Sukeroku in a romantic way. The creators are fully aware of the time we live in and the time that once was. They showed the writer openly speculating that Bon is the father, because they knew fans would come to do so as well. In that scene the writer, who is an avid admirer of Yakumo, represents us, the audience, in our unstopable search for answers, while Konatsu is them, the authors, who tells the writer, hence us, that while the thought of Bon being the father would definitely add a special flavour to the story, the truth is that it doesn't and will never matter. It's a detail that only serves as food for a twisted obsessed mind (note how the writer is in the shade), something that you shouldn't let yourself become.

@@Swishyhead If it's worth anything, in the manga, there was an added scene in volume 10 or so that explicitly had Yakumo saying he thinks Konatsu has feelings for him. Not that it matters or anything, but assuming Yakumo is the father is probably the most logical thing

Great shows. Few anime ever delve into the underworld and characters with less than sparkly lives and histories. I know there are exceptions but this stories plot played out amazingly well. Like a Greek tragedy or more appropriately, like a rakugo story.

I really love this opening because it brings japan memories before travelling to this country, when I used to live in China I remember I watch the second season every week and it gaves me inspiration to meet the places where the main characteres used to live. Remember is still alive and I am glad showa genroku rakugo appeared in my life, even one my best japanese friends watched along me some important episodes and she really like it. :D

I’ve known about this anime since it came out but never got to watch it cause I was dealing with personal problems at the time that I didn’t have the motivation to watch anime but I always would look at the seasonal anime openings and this opening always got my attention and the more I watch it the more tempted I am to watch this anime it makes me wonder a lot of what it’s about it looks very eerie yet beautiful I’m so interested in this anime

GrimDaddy Both seasons are absolutely phenomenal, with stunning directing, characters that are as lively as the Rakugo performances, and drama that is done spectacularly. Both seasons are among the best of the decade and my favorite anime that came out in each of the years they aired in.

I would highly recommend it, however it is a bit slow moving. A lot of anime is action packed and has fast plots but this anime takes it's time... I actually started tearing up at the very end of the first season. I think that it really is worth the watch if you have the time! Both seasons are really good.
