As an Australian we don't have enough players of older games like bfbc2 or bf3 to run a decent amount of players so we are forced to use USA based servicers and typically get pings in 200-250 range which is annoying!

There are about 29 servers in my country for BF4 (PC). Since i normally only play hardcore mode, i mostly play at US servers because there are more available for hardcore, which gives me about 140ping. Personally i dont care that much for ping unless it's below 200. I just play for fun. But 250 is too much.

Peccath yup - but would really explain how you got killed. i.e. that you had only 40% health and not 100 as you thought or that there was more than 1 player shooting at you. Such a "replay" killcam would also expose how the lag fucks up the experience of all players.

Battle(non)sense Modern warfare 2 had this killcam feature and this showed allot of fuck ups from the "netcode". You shooting at the opponent and from his killcam you were a few meters behind your actual position and not firing at all. Usually with high ping players again. Chris can you also do these test outside the CTE? Because of the BF4 launch fuck up I haven't bought premium, like many others, but I would still like to know the state of high ping players outside the CTE.

Been saying this for a while now but no one believed me...bf benefits aggressive play, if your the high or low pinger if your the one to round a corner you'll have an advantage. The problem is people who feel victimized because they have high/low ping, since they feel disadvantaged they tend to play defensively meaning they will wait for another player to round a corner on them and they will more than likely die.

You left one important point out, the fact that when a server gets filled up with players the performence decreases drasticly, your tests where done on an empty server with only 2 players factor in 62 more and the server will behave less and less well.

it's not just about the server but also about the connection, for example, on average the lowest ping you will ever get in italy with a standard connection(not talking of bf servers, but pingtests and stuff) can't be lower than 25 ms, even if the server is 200 meters from you, it just sucks that much, so you'll understand that a slightly worse connection means that you can't play in servers outside your country with those limitations, as you'll most likely get over 75 ms. this all without even taking in account ping fluctuation and packet loss, aside from bandwidth.

Low ping has advantage because they will see you first when popping around a corner. 1. "Low ping" is camping around corner 2. "High ping" jumps corner and sees "low ping" first. Therefore, "high ping" shoots first 3. "Low ping' takes 1-2 hits but melts "high ping" Why? Because "high ping's" shots registered too late to be an advantage. "Low ping" always wins AKA: NOT me 3.

Eaxctly! That's why I generally use long range scoped ARs/Battle Rifles/DMRs. I stay far away and out of sight, I live longer. Snipers might sound like a good option for this, until you realize if often can back fire when hit reg does not register... or you get ambushed and get killed (even if you fired first, but hit reg fucks up).

Even when both players had the low ping the one going behind cover was still shown as not to be behind cover on the other screen, so the issue of that still persists with high or low ping. That's what annoys me, why head glitching exists as well.

Battle(non)sense My personal hitreg issues have less to do with ping and more to do with my network card and the way it handles bf4s data flow. I have made a MASSIVE breakthrough when it comes to my hitreg in bf4. I happened across a video and post on a tech site that spoke of a program called "TCPOptimizer" and some settings that when changed will not decrease your ping or latency but significantly improve your hitreg. The process included disabling settings such as "TCP window auto tuning, Disabling TCP 1323 timestamps" and enabling "windows scaling heuristics" setting "time to live to 128" etc etc etc... I was totally ready to call it quits with this game till I gave it this one last try. I doubt that you will see and difference in your gameplay because you never had any hitreg problems to begin with even at 600 ping... cuz while I was at 79 ping id still put 15 shots into someone and get 2 hitmarkers. Gladly now though I seem to have some Much improved hitreg. Have been playing with this for 3 days now and ill be continuing tests on different servers. Note: before "fix" average accuracy at the end of a round would be 14-16%.... After "fix" its 19-28%. PS thumbs up on another good video friend

***** Tried all of those thing months ago... Did nothing. Go look at some of my bf4 videos if you don't believe me. I have been running with the network monitoring graph up since the spring patch came out. I have gone from bursting someone twice with m16 and out of the 6 shots, all would hit on my client but I would get 3 server side conformations. (yes he explained the accumulation of data thing making it confirm one shot less sometimes, but that's not what's happening in my cases) I'd put 6 shots in someone, get all 6 client side conformations and only 3 server side conformations... Then the person would turn, kill me and be on 26 HP suggesting that he flat out didn't get some damage somewhere along the line. Now (for the first time in over a year) I can confidently put 3 shots in someone's head then turn and engage his teamamte with confidence that the first dude is going to die 1 second later. The graph now confirms nearly every single green x with a red one. I can now drop people in one burst at medium range again. And my accuracy increase isn't a placebo effect either. Not that the game confirms almost all my hits instead of saying I missed and I can clearly see blood spraying wildly out of my targets. Somewhere along the line the changes done has helped significantly.

The only thing you didn't address is a high ping and low ping player actually exchanging fire, that's really important, in my experience the high ping player often wins. That's where the eating bullets thing comes from, not just one firing at the other, but an exchange. Because you can fire half a magazine into a high ping player sometimes and come out with no damage done, because the game favored the higher ping player and awarded them a kill even after they took 15 rounds to the chest and head. It's interesting though, BF uses a notably different system than other games, the Source engine goes up to 1000ms of lag compensation in it's default configuration, which is way too high and causes all kinds of bullet sponge and cover damage issues.

You are the voice of reason in a world saturated with hype and intentional misdirection. Thankyou sir. PLEASE do an updated version of this same test for the Battlefield 1 experience. I also request a vehicle version of the same test. I mostly fly on any BF title, and what I have seen in air combat bothers me. Planes are bouncing all over the sky, teleporting hundreds of meters at a time, or even having my bullets and rockets pass visibly thru the enemy plane without damage or hitmarker. The lag issues are not always present, but are frequent enough to warrant further investigation. I play on PS4 West Coast US servers only as I live in the West US. I tried a test of my own and played a short match on a European server, WOW did it make a difference. I was able to shoot down enemy planes (That had 100% health to start) in a fraction of the time it takes on a server close to me. I refer to TTK, not the skill of the enemy pilot. I believed that the higher tickrate of BF1 was going to solve the problems of previous BF titles. Maybe it DID, but without having a region lock or ping limiter for servers, the new and improved Battlefield experience STILL SUFFERS. Your imput would be greatly appreciated sir.

So magical yup - with an increasing amount of players, the server FPS gets lower and lower. when players then leave the server - or the round ends - then the srver FPS recovers. the effect players with insane latency variation have on the Server FPS is not known though. I would guess it stresses the server even more to compensate for that.

1nfinityy BF4 has projectile based hit detection, rather than hitscan. Meaning that if I fire a kill shot round at a target and that round will take 1 second to hit that target, then the target has up to one second to return a kill shot, resulting in a trade.

Of course low ping has a major advantage. Being able to see someone before they can see you is a huge advantage. Trust me, I play with a ping over a 100ms and it's a mfer sometimes. I've played on low ping as well plenty of times and I do much better.

I really wish they would have an oldschool server hosting & browser system with complete freedom, such as what we had in older BF games (I believe) and in like COD 4. Right now the way they try to profit off of it by licensing servers to only specific providers also results in those providers having to cut corners to keep good margins (since EA takes a cut) and they have too many servers running off of one system and/or connection.

Hiebly yup - all the pre-Frostbite Engine Battlefield games had an inbuilt server browser and public serverfiles so that you could host your own server at a LAN party or on a dedicated server. That said - since Battlefield 2 (2005) we have ranked servers, and the ranked server provider had to pay a fee per server instance to EA. The same was true for Battlefield 2142. The public server files you could host your own server with on your dedicated server was unranked - but the community came up with their own ranking system, so these "unranked" servers also provided ranking- just not from EA. :)

And the funny part? Call of Duty nowadays automatically adds about 300 ping to every player in the server in order to randomize the outcome of gunfights and appeal to noobs by letting them have a few unfair wins. And the hilarious part? Not enough people complain. The kids are being manipulated by the monster called Activision. I'm glad the Battlefield community is much more serious about latency in the online experience.

And that confirmed what already knew that least on console for me at least don't make much difference if I play EU VS US servers

If everyone had servers in every region, with enough player base in that area that is, sure we can set the ping limit lower, and the overall experience will be better for both sides, until then, like you said both suffer equally right now, different circumstances, but both get perks and cons for fighting with a person from different region, and there is no such thing as high ping advantage, since u get the same advantage in a different circumstance if u r a low ping player fighting against a high ping player, u can shoot first.

Today on an ADK server, a player was not rejected from the game despite his high ping rate. When I finally had enough and complained to the admin, they finally kicked the guy and his ping was 1,536ms. No wonder I rage on some servers.

I wish this could be tested on BF3. I still actively play that game on ps3 and it's become horrendous. Nothing but boosters, laggers, and battlelog hackers left. I encounter far too many tryhards on infantry maps who are nearly impossible to kill. The server will feel fine for multiple games and then you get a group of foreign players that join in and all of a sudden hitreg goes to shit, I start dying behind cover, or experience the "damage dumping". On my screen it doesnt even look like they're shooting me (sometimes their character models aren't even fully facing me) and I'm not receiving any damage, but in a split second everything they actually WERE firing at me finally gets received and I die in what feels like one hit. It's infuriating. Skill and reaction time go out the window in cases like that, because it simply isn't an option anymore. What you're seeing on your screen isn't what the enemy sees on there's or even what the server is updating at that moment.

More servers means longer waiting time for the game to start. As in, it will be fewer players how play the game on the same server. Harder to matching Elo. And more costly for the company, meaning higher price on the game. And we are already complaining that the price is to high at 60$ and will raise to 70$.

Yet another awesome video, the OOR is can be used as an advantage in Hardline, not so much in BF4, if you go into a Crosshair match on HL, and deliberately play OOR, you can sponge so much, and sometimes theve the .300 knockout isn't even a 1 hit kill at medium range. problem with console is kids simply can't read. pc however, it seams people do not care, they want to play with levelcap or jackfrags, when their ping is 800ms!!

I play BF since BC1. I never saw/see that 5 bar signal ever!! I think if EA smart enough they would provide more region server coz that WILL improve the game experience for all players no matter where they are. More servers locations = less high ping players around the world. Nice vidoe as usual.

Awesome work you've put into getting to the bottom of these issues. Shame EA don't seem too concerned about them. I tend to have one of the lowest ping to servers I join and would never understand why I would constantly die when I'm well into cover. The server degradation or server FPS also makes a lot of sense as there would be times in servers where it would start off fine and then more and more I would experience wierd things like no hit markers when hitting someone and other crazy things to the point I'd have to leave and find another one and have the whole experience happen later on. As long as there is no server browser integrated ping kick, you cannot do 75ms ping kick imho, some people cant do anything for their location and therefore their ping.

EggersMcBraiden As i said in the video - both region lock and high ping kicker need to be supported by the server browser to avoid that you join a server that will just kick you once you joined it. This is in fact the biggest flaw of using ProCon plugins for that functionality.

Chris you should try an experiment, try to see if when taking damage while firing at an enemy...if your bullet register properly. It seems to me at time while I take damage my bullet seem to not register.

This would be unfair for me because im pretty sure i live close to alot of people i play with, though having no isp(even right next to a highway) i use my phones internet signal which at night boosts to about 5-10mb/s and im still with 90-130 pings. about half a mile away during the day at a local library, my signal will get to about 70mb/s down and i still have the same pings. While having great signals and being right next to a phone signal tower i still get highish pings.

I'm an EU player playing on BF4's EU servers with my PS4 system. And my ping is around 75 or 85ms on the EU servers when using the in-game performance test. That's a pretty high ping considering my relatively low ping otherwise. Using several different ping tests on my PC, I have yet to go over 40ms (

and this, I assume is with a packet loss that would be negligible or close to zero? because even on low ping servers (the ones on my region) against low ping players, my packet loss skyrockets due to traffic shapping and stupidly low quality network (both from me and other players) I get the same thing (results displayed) with playing on low pckt loss and high ping in low usage times i.e. 2 in the morning, a very practical time to play, shall I add.

Been having this problem since 2013 Chris. I'm playing on Xbox360 then Xbox One. Usually South American players vs. Canadians. Which is further distance than Canadian Vs European. The ping are painful. You can select the server by Ping on console by using the battlelog browser. But that's annoying... Having that data on screen would be much more helpful. I've been in 14 ping servers, with really terrible lag. Either proves quick match is flawed or people are actively searching poor connections. This is exactly why I suggested zone lock in a previous comment to your videos, which you downplayed.

There is a reason you don't see ping on console and I am of the firm belief that players would get very bored quick seeing high ping player top of the board all day.

I Agree, but what if your team consists of a player in the US and a Player in the EU and a Player in Africa and a player in Australia? You cannot lock this per region because there are many competitive players world wide and maybe the design around the regions needs to be rethought for instance a server that changes all the players ping to an averages say all players ping is set to 200ms even thought some players have a ping of 50ms.

Neill Le Roux that would be the worst game (experience) ever then if the server would artificially increase my 35ms ping to 200ms just because some guy joins in from another continent.

Battle(non)sense Thank you for finding out how much ping each bar represents. I always wondered why I have a bad connection with 5 bars. They should implement the number of your ping in the scoreboard so I know if I have an unstable connection.

Great video. I hate the fact that on PS4 we don't get the ping value listed and sometimes I think even if I join in the east coast servers, i actual put in west coast servers because of the lack of them.

why did you remove the other player in the vids. it makes for confusion. player 1. player 2, but when you see the guy in cover's pov you cant see the other player shooting. that just messes up my head. why did you remove the shooter for p1 ?

Great video. Have you tried testing your latency on console? My Xbox's detailed network thing shows I have an average latency of 75 to 78ms. On Battlefield 4, in US East servers (servers in my region), the in-game network performance thing will usually show my latency between 85ms (if I'm lucky) and 120ms so when you're talking about your ping being 24ms I'm just like "holy crap that's low".

Dillon Dunlap Yeah the "latency" in the Network Graph and the "ping" that we see in the scoreboard on PC are not quite the same things. Awesome video, thanks for sharing these informations. Unfortunately, Battlefield 4 for me has been unplayable since last update. My ping is always above 160ms because there's no servers in Brazil (where I live) or in my continent, at least not on consoles, only on PC and I play on Xbox One.

they edited did update on ping pars , looks like now we have lower then 50ms = 5 bars , 100ms and lower = 4 bars, etc.....

i know this is off topic but what do you think about implementing back bots for MP maps and still get points.I think this is a great idea and you can play offline dont have to worry about cheaters and all maps that nowone plays anymore you can play any day you like

Jura Pura What would be nice were if bots could be used to fill a server. So that when you join an "empty" server then there are at leas 50% bots. And the more players join, the less bots there are on the server untill all get replaced by real players. in addition to that I want the SP/LAN/COOP of Battlefield 2 back - where I can play any of the MP maps locally against bots for practice or fun.

I hate that they favorise high ping. They should only accept hits when the players have a ping below 50. This is drastic, I mean specials servers named low ping master race or something. Because the ping compensation is bs. What the lower ping player sees on his screen should be what happens I have no empathy for those people living far away, it's EA fault for not providing servers for those regions and they should be sued for poor online services to a large portion of their clients.

+2263275electro More admins on PC should take use of ProCon and the high ping kicker, and set it to 75ms - for some reason most admins set it to 200ms...... Also console admins must finally get access to that functionality - however the question remains of Sony and Microsoft allow DICE/EA to even implement such a high ping picker for admins to use.

+Battle(non)sense Indeed as I play on ps4 I find this really annoying for all the games especially cod. Did you do a lag compensation video on Counter-Strike Global Offensive ? This video is old but BF4 is still played till this date. There's another problem with BF4 not covered in this video! BF4 netcode is the worst of all. BF3 and BF1 have a much better netcode. I cant say I lost a fight because of the game in BF1 or BF3, but in BF4 it happens a lot. The hit registration varies a lot depending on the number of players in the match. In your test you used just 2 players. Usually BF4 works fine in matches with up 30 players, but if the player count increases, the hit registration problem becomes a lot more evident! When I play matches with up to 12 vs 12 player the game works really great, but in matches with around 40 players it seems the TTK doubles! Hitreg and desync are no rare!

Not to mention whenever my connection is great, I generally get booted from that server by way of... You've lost connection to EA servers on public servers. My setup exactly what is asked for, open NAT, ports, and extremely fast download and upload.

story of my life. Im from New Delhi, India. Get 90 Ms to singapore servers on a good day.. and the network graph shows it's actually 140 ms. Hit Client/Hit Server is usually around the ratio of 100:75. Flying a jet,heli and using Snipers/DMR's is impossible. Its like im doing everything slow-mo. They leave that ping limit upto that level so that all players can get into existing servers without EA having to provide more servers. If they locked it below 200 ms then i guess half the people who play wont be able to get into any servers. Not going to buy any EA FPS till i see Indian Servers.

I really wish that servers in my region had variety. For my own region, I can only play DICE servers that have one game mode and one set of maps. If I want to play a server with multiple game modes, or a Rush server with some of the bad maps taken out, I have to play EU.

lol for me the experience in bf4 right now is about what is seen on 200ms vs 200ms player or even worse all the time. Since europe servers are hosted in GB i used to have about 60-65 ping to all europe servers. But since the realease of hardline it just kept increasing and now i'm at over 100 on europe server, which is straight up ridiculous. I did all kinds of test but i couldn't find a reason for this other than that the servers did just get worse. I did ping test on my computer, on my ps4, on my computer using the very same cables and config as on the ps4 but my ping still seems to be fine. Just the bf4 servers have ridiculous ping with also very high ping variation. anyone else noticed that? :(

If i for say have a low ping i have the advantage of a player that has high ping but if its the other way around i will get totally destroyed and does ping change with the amount of devices connected to the same internet connection?

Battle(non)sense Great video again. A couple of things i will say is that the hit reg issue also occurs frequently whether ping is high or low. The other thing i will say is that sure i can play on local servers, but many people in the BF community have friends all over the world and we like to play together, so of course our pings will be higher.. this is an international game, so limiting ping on every server in every region would be unfair i think.. There are alot of US servers with ping limits already, only the EGO Dice servers, and a couple of others have no limit. I posted in the BF forums to show in the server browser when a server has a limit so i can avoid it, but local players can also see that its limited.

+Ted I would love to but for that I'd need 2x XBOX One's, 2x XBox Live, 2x Halo 5. Sadly this channel does not even remotely generate enough money to finance that. I have tried to extend my testing to console by crowdfunding the required hardware - but that attempt failed..... miserably.
