Had to do this as well....Drilling threw the drain to break the brass fitting was a great idea and it helped me a ton. Still a pain in the ass, sometimes I think being a home owner isn't all what it's cracked up to be :-) especially when you can't afford a professional to come in and do the work and the wife is nag nag nagging, I sent her to the store for some drain threads LOL she came back from the store and didn't talk to me for a week....PERFECT!!!!!! you young bucks will get it after 25 years of marriage.

This is what all KZbin videos should look like. Terrific stuff, and it helped me tremendously. In my case, my drain assembly was glued to the 2" ABS so I had to cut my drain pipe and use a fernco to bring a new section of pipe up to the shower pan. Thanks for the great video.

@Keith I haven't had any success cutting anything with my Dremel. The little devices that come with the kit (about 75 various types) are mostly useless except for silly little tasks. I wouldn't even remotely expect to cut that brass retainer. What kind of attachment did you use?

This video helped so much I had to cut a hole at the bottom of my trailer just to get to mine so I could replace it. We used silicone for the actual drain to shower contact and then silicone when putting the drain pipe into the bottom of the drain

Pro tip : put a brick or something underneath the actual drain pipe under your house to add extra support so the drain water doesn't put pressure on your drain and cause it to come off in the future.

Great video. I'm redoing the drain in my shower because the plumber's putty has dried out and cracked. The house is 10-11 years old and it just started leaking slightly. Instead of putty I'll be using 100% silicone.

Well. What can I say... I used plumbers putty only and it stay at list 20 years. Probably your shower pan slightly moving up and down when you walk in shower. Other vice I didn't see why putty can crack. Don't use a regular 100% silicone. It's not for under water and Its wont work long time. If you decide use silicon there I recommend you MARINE GRADE SILICON. ITs SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR UNDERWATER CONTACT. 3M Marine Grade Silicone Sealant. Clear. 3M Marine Grade Silicone Sealant .White. www.homedepot.com/p/3M-3-oz-Marine-Fast-Cure-Adhesive-Sealant-PN05220/100571784 I have it in my car and I use it when regular silicone can't stay long time. Absolutely incredible! If it didn't work the first time, 2:15, let's try it again, 3:03? Plumbers Putty and silicon will eventually fail. All drains will eventually fail. But try a Danco sink strainer washer. IT FITS!!! Have not had one fail yet.

After I hired a plumber to replace the drain, a glue joint on the p-trap was leaking so I decided to rebuild the p-trap myself which didn't line up exactly so in pulling on it I pulled the pipe out of the Sioux Chief compression sleeve and now I'm having to start all over. Back to square one. Hope I don't have to redo all over again to redo the putty.

Did you solve the reason for the failure of the original drain? It appears it was well installed and the problem may have been the drain pan flexing and possibly the trap was prevented from moving because of the ceiling below thus raising the drain away from the pan. Won't that happen again?

Awesome video! I followed the steps and but I still have the leak that drips along the pipe. In my setup the last session of pipe is metal and get pretty rusty. I suspect it might not go tightly seal with the rubber gasket. Any suggestions?

Before slide rubber on pipe, apply on metal end DAP clear sealant. I use this sealant regularly on the plastic/metal connection under sink/tub in the bath. Hi! Thanks for the video. May I ask what you used the Silicone Faucet Grease (in the little grey container) for? I only see you applying the 300 degree Plumbers Grease to the outside of the ABS pipe coming up and the inside of the rubber gasket as well as the top of the chamfered edge of the gasket. I assume that is to reduce friction so that you can slide the gasket over the ABS pipe as well as to reduce friction of the chamfered edge of the gasket on the brass compression nut. The reason I'm having to replace mine is that the original plumber tightened the nut down too much which caused the rubber gasket to squish out creating a non-uniform seal on the pipe. Anyways, wondering what that Silicone Faucet Grease was for. Thanks for your video. It helped me a lot.

I think it's supposed to be below. The castlenut pushes the rubber gasket down the tapered body which compresses it. However, I have the same problem and haven't had any problems yet(although I might, but I'm pretty sure it's the seal under the basket).

I have leak. Black ABS pipe moves up and down pretty freely through the floor drain gasket that is supposed to be compressed by brass threaded nut. If I remove the threaded nut and replace the gasket and compress the the washer should that solve my problem? What is the best tool to remove the threaded nut? ty

Yes, replace rubber gasket and usually it work. Big jaw pliers for big nut. Read tools under video in description.

tubesockets120v I work without helper. Probably if one person will hold drain from the tap and I use a players under we can unscrew the nut. But in my hand it's just spinning around. It was like welded thru the years. So only dremel/cut off tool or drill will work for me. No space for cut off tolls under floor, so, I used drill from top to split the nut.

Putty works great. Sometimes ive seen people use silicone....Personally ive always found that silicone squishes out and lets the drain fitting slide too much...and so it can leak. Whereas putty is denser and more forgiving.

@@FixitAll ok gotcha thank you very much, I’m running into a problem on my shower, I removed my old drain shower because it was leaky (it was a real pain to take it off because someone decided to pack it with plumbers putty where you screw the crown nut) but anyways I got the new drain but I noticed it’s longer by 1/2 inch and when I went to put it in it doesn’t go all the way flat on the shower because it hits where the PVC 90 degrees starts so I think I need a shorter drain but I’m unable to find one in the stores you think one of those welded ones will work for my situation ?
