Please, please buy yourself a couple of trowels, one they use for brick laying, with a pointy end, one you use for weeding or planting and a pair of gloves. Not only will you protect your hands, but you'll be able to get your treasures out more easily without bending or doing other minor damage. Far lighter once you've dug your hole than your big spade, not so tiring. Also, try not to dig all the way round to make your hole, half way will do, then fold it back. Easier to tidy up after and easier for the roots to grow again. Hope you find your hoard one day, that will be one super special moment. Good luck!

I'm new to the Hobby, too; I've only been out 3 times. Mostly nails, bolts, bottle caps and pull tabs. However I have dug up a total of 75 cents and a 5 Peso coin from the Philippines!
