Singer is not a talent show like AGT or The Voice. It’s a reality competition for established professional singers with at least one music award already. Dimash wasn’t known at all in China, so he was brought in that year as a wild card.

This was his second song in the 2017 Chinese show ‘The Singer’. The first song he sang was SOS. The producers invite established, professional singers who compete. Dimash was a late, wild card, invitee because he was known by many in China. Dimash narrowly missed winning because he got a throat infection during the competition (during the broadcast they showed him seeing a doctor and the doctor recommended that he not sing any more high notes in the competition), the songs he sang in English could have been better but he was just learning how to say the English words in the songs, and because 2 other song choices didn’t help him. As a side note, Jessie J won the following year.

Awww. She missed his dad part. His dad just returned (He had to go home for business.) The staff knew he had return. Dimash didn't. When Dimash spotted father in audiance, he broke into the most incredible smile. Than rushed into father's arms. This is part of The Singer contest, the contest lasted for weeks. Dimash said later, that if he'd know Dad was in audience, wouldn't been so cheeky .LOL

Just coming here to say this! Not sure if it's this version or a different clip. But the moment he see's his dad and then the reunion off stage🥰 his parents couldn't travel with him to the show. His dad managed to make a special trip and the show helped make it a surprise. So sweet.

The gentleman at the end of the video in the audience who did the fist pump is Dimash's father. He flew over to the competition in Beijing to see his son who was homesick. In traditional Kazakh custom, Dimash as the oldest boy was given to his paternal grandparents to raise. Kazakhs consider older people repositories of knowledge and wisdom. So his grandparents moved into Dimash's home with his parents and siblings. Dimash's parents are opera and traditional singers. There are some great videos on youtube that show his mom and dad singing together. Dimash spent around 3 years in China in competitions. The biggest one was called 'I Am Singer'. China helped make Dimash an international star and they consider him their Kazakh little brother. He is in a class of his own; most people who hear him for the first time wonder if he is an alien or a human? Be sure to hear (with Emily) the soundtrack song for a foreign film called Across Endless Dimensions. Also Qairan Elim, which was made partly because of friends he has lost to Covid-19; it is like a prayer for the earth. And don't forget We Are One, also a hope for peace and health. BTW, Dimash recently received his Master's Degree in music, plays at least 8 instruments and has been studying voice and music since he was 4. He recently turned 26, and is 6'3". Sometimes people assume he is a small guy. I think he works off his calories in rehearsals and shows. Thanks for your great reactions. Most people intro Dimash with S.O.S. because it shows he has an extreme range at the beginning, and then goes even higher. It also has it's melody and variety of dynamics and timbres going for it. Having won Episode #1 with "S.O.S.", "Opera 2" was a good choice for Episode #2 for a number of reasons. The Chinese audience members are the judges. They vote for their favorite performances of the night, and the loser is replaced by a new contestant. The Chinese audience was familiar with "Opera 2", because it had been popular when Vitas released it as a demonstration of his range. So when Dimash modulated over and over, higher than Vitas they knew it, and responded accordingly. He won this episode too. One good thing about having the audience members be the judges is that on English songs that Dimash learned phonetically, his pronunciation imperfections would probably not be noticed by many of them.

Great reactions guys,takes me back to the 1st time I saw this. I enjoy your reactions but one thing puzzles me. You are obviously well & truly in to dimash,who is often referred to as the 'king' when it comes to vocals & rightly so but I haven't seen anywhere that you've come across the lady that is often referred to as his 'queen'. Depending on peoples taste I suppose this isn't as clear cut a statement as it is with dimash because there appears to be more than one candidate. I see you're well aware of one of those potential candidates in the fabulous morissette, but nothing with regards to another,S.Korea's SoHyang. I thought she'd be right up your lane,a gospel singer at heart but can sing ANY genre,rock,pop,ballads,blues,jazz & can even be heard rapping on a song called 'day day'. She should be famous all over the world,she's certainly got the instrument that can hold its own with the greats,but she shuns the limelight,she doesn't seek fame or fortune & has rejected record deals from big international co's. She says she only wants to use her gift to help bring some comfort to those that are experiencing difficult times. Her covers are like no others & she is responsible for the arrangements of all the songs she performs. I would suggest her performance of a song which i'm sure a man, such as yourself,is already familiar with (just so you get the sense of her musicality with what her version sounds like against the original) & that is 'bridge over troubled water' from the show 'immortal songs 2'. If I have somehow missed any reaction to her that you've already done then I apologise, but if not then please do yourself a favour & check her out,it seems wrong that someone who so obviously loves music as much as yourself would never get to hear this amazing woman at least once. I am absoloutly sure that if you do listen once that it wont stay at once,it will just be the 1st step on to the Sohyang train, a la dimash & morissette. Consider this recommendation a belated birthday gift,you never know,in time you may look back & regard it as one of your best gifts ever!
