I want to put some major context on the 1996-97 Arizona Wildcats for the younger fans. This was a team that had no seniors on the roster. The team featured Mike Bibby, Miles Simon, Michael Dickerson, and Jason Terry. That team finished with 19 wins during the regular season. It was a average season for Arizona basketball considering how difficult the Pac-10 was at the time. Once the team got an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Lute Olson allowed his team to play with a loose free attitude and pulled off an amazing run to the national championship. They were the first team in NCAA tournament history to defeat three numbers 1 seeds. The 1996-97 Kansas Jayhawks was perhaps one of the greatest teams in NCAA history. They featured Paul Pierce, Scot Pollard, Jacque Vaughn, and Raef LaFrentz. This was a team that was top team in the country and favorites to win the championship. When they faced Arizona in the regional semifinals, Olson's guards through everything off for Kansas. That's when you saw the brilliance of Bibby and Simon in the backcourt in pulling off the massive upset. Once they reached the Final Four, they were expected to lose against North Carolina. Led by Vince Carter, Antwan Jamison, and Shammon Williams. Bibby was cold blooded in the second half when he made six three pointers that broke the game open. Finally, in one of the greatest championship games in Final Four history. Arizona pushed Kentucky to their physical limit. Kentucky was a loaded team led by Ron Mercer, Derek Anderson, Scott Padgett, and Wayne Turner. They were the defending champions and were favored to defend their title. That night, Bibby and Simon cemented their legacy in Arizona history in winning the championship. That entire run is the main reason why Lute Olson is in the hall of fame. Nobody anticipated Arizona winning the championship and they pulled it off. Salute to the 1996-97 Arizona Wildcats for that historic run.

Even though I’m more known as a former WWE, pro wrestler, and now a city mayor/Commissioner, I played college basketball as well. In high school I played against Mike Bibby and Kobe at different times through AAU and five star camp. Mike was such the quintessential point guard it wasn’t even funny! And he would legit light up whoever the other point guard that was getting them more attention that week at the camp. I also one time watched him light up my point guard Stephon Marbury, because we were the class of 95 and Kobe & Mike Bibby were the class of 96. So Mike did this to staff as a rising junior to Steph’s rising senior summer. He was so damn good and high school!
