Very nice and well produced. What is missing from all of these vids on youtube is what do you do when there is a glitch and how do you recover when things go wrong. You clearly are a professional and it shows by your confident and purposeful movements. You can spot an experienced mechanic on youtube by the way they operate a screwdriver. But even the best of us have those moments when things go wrong. I’m just suggesting that you start collecting examples of when things go sideways and compile a few situations that us mere mortal will face. Great respect to an obviously accomplished craftsman.

Hi @Shrednaught, Thank you so much for your videos! They contain so much useful information and are so much fun to watch. They've helped me a lot building my first (3d printed) surfboard for river surfing here in Munich. I'm currently building a foil board from an old surfboard and was wondering, if the fill coat is required to waterproof the board or if the laminate is already waterproof - if you don't sand it of course. I will put a big pad on the foil board anyways, so not much of the top laminate will be visible. I have of course sanded the laps and will do a fill coat on the bottom or the board. I'd be very happy if I could get away with not having to sand and fill the top too. Thanks!

This depends on board size and layup. You will use less resin for a clear free lap over a tinted cutlap. For a good start I would get 3 litres total for a standard shortboard. @Shrednaught3 жыл бұрын
The fin box patch and also the deck patch were both laminated in a green resin tint and the next layers of fibreglass were clear. I allowed the patches to dry so I could cut them nice and clean and there would be no spread of green resin into my clear overlay. Yup, once the patches were about 80% cured I then cut them to my tape lines with a razor. Just a straight 90degree cut following the tape 🤙

Hey, great video!! Super helpful. I had a few questions before I start building my first board. What's the advantage (apart from different colours) of doing a tail and deck patch vs doing 2 full layers of glass on the top and bottom? If it's just a weight thing is there that much of a difference in weight between the two methods that makes doing patches worth it? (Also would there be a significant strength difference between patches vs 2 layers of glass). The second question is what's the difference between putting the fin boxes in before vs after glassing? As I have seen some videos where the fin boxes are put in before the glassing and some are put in after (generally with single fin longboards). If you put the fin boxes in before glassing shouldn't you put the leash plug in at the same time? Sorry if these are newbie questions. Keep up the great videos!
@Shrednaught3 жыл бұрын
Good questions mate, So the glassing schedule is usually suited to the board and many longboards do have double layers of glass on bottom, but generally it isn’t needed. The bottom is the part of the board that you’re not standing on ( hopefully ) so 2 layers is overkill. It’s doesn’t sound like much but it will absorb the resin and add weight. The patch is just for the fin boxes to add strength. Same with 3/4 deck patch is to add strength where standing and you don’t stand on the nose section so can loose that bit. But I often do full length patches. Just depends on board. The fin boxes were placed in after glass on this board because of the coloured tint. It looks cleaner IMO. But if I am doing a a clear board I’ll always go under glass. You can also get the leash cups to go under glass but as the board style in the video was slightly retro I went with the leash cup with resin around it.

Nice video. I haven't shaped a board before but I'm keen to give it a go so I've started watching a bunch of videos like this. There's some good tips in this that I haven't come across before (especially about hot coating the deck without tape before sanding the cut lap, looks like a good solution). I've noticed that some people glass the fin patch on at the same time as doing the rest of the board, if that makes sense - so they kinda rest the fin patch under the layer of cloth that covers the board then resin both layers on at the same time, whereas you did your fin and deck patches as a separate step. Is there any advantage/disadvantage to either process? And the deck patch - is that a kinda third layer (like deck patch+4+4 or whatever) or is the rest of the deck a single layer, and I'm assuming if it is the cloth is a heavier weight (like deck patch+6 I guess?). Sorry to bombard you with questions mate but reading down through some of the comments you actually bother responding to people which is super helpful! Cheers.
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
On these boards I did the fin patch and deck patch seperate as they were different colours. If you were doing a clear or just all one solid colour then doing the fin patch same time works. Only other reason to not do the fin patch under the bottom glass layer is because you’re doing fin boxes post glass rather than pre. I do my fin boxes this way if I’m doing some colour work as it leaves a cleaner look.
@Shrednaught2 жыл бұрын
Normally the deck patch is just an addition to to glass layer. So if you had a 6oz patch that would go under the 4oz total glass layer on the deck giving you 10oz total up to where the patch finishes. It doesn’t have to be a “patch”. You can just do a full 6oz to the nose.. it just depends on what sort of board you build and the glass lay up you desire 🤙
@jamesdudley91622 жыл бұрын
@@Shrednaught Awesome, Thanks for getting back to me so fast. I like the look of a good deck patch, there's something more 'classic' about it. So on a kinda mid length egg (which is what I think I'll have a go at first - South Coast of England doesn't call for performance boards very often), with a deck patch, would a 6oz patch and a 4oz total layer be strong enough, or should I go 6 and 6 for a bit of extra strength? Thanks again for getting back to me mate.

@@michaellawlor2461 ok cool. Epoxy can be fickle. Temperature and conditions can play a big part. Make sure your board is completely clean of any dust or debris that can be making small zits in your fill coat. If your mixing in cooler environments, whisking the epoxy too much can introduce a lot of small bubbles and because it’s quite thick in cool temps the bubbles struggle to raise to the surface and end up in your resin. Try warming your epoxy ( only part A not the hardener ) up and mixing then allowing to sit for a minute before putting on your board. Cleanliness is my best tip Good luck mate 🤙

Hey man. I want to try make my own surfboard and have some questions regarding that. Do you think its enough for one layer of 200 grams/square meter on top and bottom side of the board. It will be a minimal 7ft board in EPS with a wooden stringer in the middle. And also should i do extra layers of epoxy resins after the glassfiber layer? Thanks Dude!

Hey mate, I definitely suggest a minimum 2 layers on the deck and one on the bottom. A 7ft mini mal in eps will need some strength and weight isn’t an issue so go with 6oz. When you have done the top and bottom laminate you will need to do the extra resin fill coats to fill in the weave and create a surface to sand. Good luck 🤙

@@Shrednaught hey man thanks for the reply, yes i hope so too, i am collecting all my gear and materials atm. I am from Belgium but living in Guatemala, there’s some nice waves to catch here but there’s no shops, no repairs .. so i kind of want to change this and start doing it myself since my fin box died some weeks ago and need to be replaced 😁 so yeah let’s see how it goes !

Не говорю по английски, может вы в видео и говорили об этом. Сколько смолы нужно на одну доску?
