What I love about this movie, is that the entire film was meant to be one giant roast of Disney in general. eg. Farquaad looks like Michael Eisner, Dulock is basically Disneyland, fairytale tropes are challenged or outright reversed, and pop songs are used in place of original works in a musical.

I don't think Fiona took her "original" form when the spell was broken, she took "true love's form" so it's because she fell in love with Shrek and because Shrek could love her regardless of what she looked like that she took that form. The fairytale book Shrek was reading at the beginning and wiped his butt with saying "like that'll ever happen" was her origin story with her as a human princess, and the true love she needed to break the spell that Shrek was so cynical about was the ending to this movie. Great writing, they had a perfect fairytale story while also subverting many fairytale tropes.

@beastialmoon23272 жыл бұрын
@@crimsontyphoon3420 isn't this explained in literally the next film? And the beginning book exposition?? Fiona was cursed as a child to have an ogre form at night. She would take "true love's form" upon a true kiss of love. Shrek, also being an ogre, was her "true love's form" and thus she stayed as an ogre. All of these details are just set dressing for the main point, though - that love for beauty is only skin deep, and it's the inner qualities that are the true beauty.

*Fun fact* Comedian Chris Farley was casted as the voice of Shrek but he died during production so they got Mike Myers (Austin Powers) to step in. The accent really makes Shrek Shrek so I’ve always wondered what the movies would have been like had Chris lived and continued. There is audio of Chris playing Shrek on YT!

One of the best moments we've learned about Shrek is why he chose to live alone in his swamp, and because other people who first saw him and called him a monster hurt his feelings pretty badly. Imagine if that had happened to us.

Another comment's probably said this. But Shrek is sort of a revenge against Disney. One of the founders of Dreamworks, Jeffery Katzenberg used to work at Disney but left after the CEO Michael Eisner had several disagreements with him. So thats why there's a lot of "anti-fairytale" jokes in this movie. It was created to rival disney and the stereotypical nicey-niceness of DIsney's animated classics. That's why there's so many references to fairytales. Lord Farquaad is even supposed to resemble Michael Eisner. The kingdom where he lives is supposed to parody DIsneyland with the perfect clean streets and the singing characters. I love both companies but really think this was an interesting commentary of the situation between the two at the time :)

10:05 to be fair Jeffrey Katzenberg used to work for Disney back in the day but until his ego gets the best of him such as after the death of Frank Wells (who died from a helicopter crash) that he saw this as an opportunity to become president of the Disney company, but Michael Eisner was hesitant about it. Katzenberg quite Disney then created and co founded DreamWorks Animation Studios.

You said Fiona loved Shrek before she even knew she was an ogre, but she knew. She knew already how she turned into one every night. This was Shrek's origin story, not Fiona's, so we don't know when Fiona got her curse or why, but she obviously had been functioning under it for some time. I love that you love animation & fairy tales & sagas, but you really need to do a deep dive into the deep history & motifs in these stories. The main place we get fairy tales in Caucasian cultures is Grimm's Fairy Tales and from Mother Goose. These are centuries old, so of course there are different iterations of them; it's one of the reasons why doing updates is perfectly in keeping with the tradition of fairy tale story telling. But these stories go back before copywrite laws. That's how it is with fairy tales, myths, & legends. Comics/graphic novels are a continuation of the storytelling tradition. The superheroes & retelling of old myths (see Neil Gaiman, MCU, etc) are new clothes on old archetypes that still function psychologically. There was a fellow, now passed away, by the name of Joseph Campbell, a university professor, who specialized in the study of these old stories. He described how they were structured and why they 'spoke' to us and processed common drives. He became pretty famous in the 1070s through a series of interviews on PBS ("Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth"), and for his books "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" and "The Hero's Journey". It was Campbell's work that George Lucas studied to create Star Wars. If you are serious about either storytelling (via graphic arts, written work, song, live theater, video, or film) or just viewing/interpreting storytelling forms, you need to at least read Campbell and read the source material. Disney & other purveyors of storytelling for an audience of children sanitize the stories. They select for the least offensive and then 'amend' anything that might offend. For instance: in the Brothers Grimm original, Rapunzel got pregnant out of wedlock & bore twins after the witch drove her away from the tower. Before losing her home, her prince had been thrown into brambles by the witch, which left him blind. When Rapunzel finally found him in the wilderness years after, her tears healed his blindness. But you likely never heard about that. When I was in 3rd grade, I become really interested in fairy tales, myths and legends. I dug out all the original source material and also read stories from other countries & cultures. You have no idea how much that has helped me in understanding film & theater. I think these things would be really useful to you. There is a universe before Disney; Disney only provides a warped mirror to view these stories. So 'adult' themes in fairy tales is actually part of their foundation and history.

Fiona's curse was that she was human by day and ogre by night but if she actually kissed Farquaad or some other human, she mostly likey would have become a human or rather stay human forever, while she stayed an ogre because her was for an ogre like Shrek, so it could have gone either way depending on who she loved.
@hunterlawrence35732 жыл бұрын
Fiona was a human princess who was cursed when she was young to transform into an ogre at night. She was placed in a tower so her true love could rescue her and break the curse. What no one realized is that because love is blind, "love's true form" is the ugly, not socially accepted form as opposed to the beautiful traditional fairytale form. Thus her true love, Shrek, doesn't care that she's not pretty when Farquaad wanted to have her locked back in the tower. Can't wait for you to watch Shrek two!
@mevb2 жыл бұрын
Actually technically Farquaad DID marry Fiona cuz they both said "I do" and Shrek was too late for the objection as you're suppoused to say "I object" when the priest say "speak now or forever hold your peace" and if you take too long he'll say "And now I hereby declare you husband and wife", so yes Farquaad became King as he married Fiona, a princess.

Shrek 2 is hands down the best sequel! And I'm very excited to see your reaction to it. Also: Fiona is a human princess that was cursed at a very young age (I'm fairly sure the fairytale Shrek was reading at the very beginning was Fiona's story) to turn into an ogre from sunset to sunrise. The exact words of Fiona's curse are "By night one way, By day another." (her changing into an ogre every night) "This shall be the norm until you find true love's first kiss." (Shrek is her true love) "And then take true love's form." (she took the form of Shrek, an ogre). I'm also fairly positive the Fairy Godmother (who you'll meet in the sequel) is the one who cursed her in the first place.

So we never got that version. Mike Myers provided Shrek with an Canadian accent. Since Myers himself was born in Canada 🇨🇦 his birth country. Eventually he settled on with a Scottish accent instead. He have restarted his lines for Shrek over and over again. Also Fiona and donkey 🐎 were both originally voiced by different celebrities.
