I relate to Shrek's insecurities so much. He's so used to people being disgusted by him and afraid of him that he automatically thinks that Fiona is like that too (after that failed confession). He was being a little petty, but at the same time, it was totally understandable. So many people act angry and lash out as a defence mechanism. Especially if you're used to solitude and harsh treatment from others.

I was working at Blockbuster when this came out. We all had to wear Shrek ear headbands and our boss gave each of us workers a button with a different character and he decided, for fun, he was gonna call us the name of the character on our button. I was Lord Farquad! 😆

i love this movie with all my heart, and my favorite gag is a very subtle one. Shrek is so alone, that he needs to take a moment each time to answer his own name because nobody else has asked. and i personally do wonder how true it is that Shrek made up his name the moment donkey asked because he had forgotten if he ever had a name.

Yes! Glad I’m not the only one who noticed. Because of things like this, I still firmly believe the original stands above the sequels. The OG Shrek is, in my opinion, the last gasp for subtle comedy (with one foot still in the 20th century), while Shrek 2 is more like a “you get what you see” all-you-can-eat buffet.

When Fiona's curse is lifted, the spell says she will "take love's true form". That's why she is permanently an ogre, because that is love's true form, even though she was born human.

Fun facts about Shrek: - When Shrek went through practice audiences before premiering, All Star by Smashmouth was meant to stand in for an original song. But, the audiences loved it so much they kept it. - Shrek was meant to be a throw away movie and was “punishment” for writers and animators assigned to it. Everyone, turned it around and made it a hit. - Shrek is meant to mock the classic fantasy romance movie. Think about it. The hero is an ogre (typically the villain), the sidekick is an annoying donkey, the princess is a fiery character that can defend herself and takes joy in some disgusting things.

I remember seeing this in the theatre with my mother and brother. My mom and I wanted to see it, and my older brother was like "I don't want to see a kid's movie". We convinced him to come, and it was so off-colour and unexpected that we all laughed hysterically. My brother enjoyed it and we rushed out to buy it on DVD when it came out. They were all really good, but I think 1, 2 and 4 are the best. Mike Myers, who does Shrek's voice is Canadian like us, so that made it extra special. Much of the humour has a Canadian feel to it.

my favourite thing about that sequence is that Shrek and Donkey have absolutely no reason to make short jokes about Farquaad - they shouldn't reasonably know he's short! They only saw him from the courtyard, far below Farquaad! The jokes were left over from an earlier draft where Shrek and Farquaad had a one on one meeting and Shrek would have the chance to actually see how short Farquaad is.

5:57 in the lord farquad castle in his place his room the rug is a bear rug the mama bear you saw in the cage from the beginning ,they killed the mama bear, when the fairytale people were at Shrek's house and in the end of the movie u see the papa bear and baby bear only.

They all read their parts separately, with a reader feeding them the lines. John Lithgow later admitted that, while he enjoyed playing Lord Farquaad, he was a little disappointed that he never actually worked directly with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, or Eddie Murphy. Subtle Dark Fate Fact: When the fairytale creatures arrive at Shrek's swamp, you can see Papa Bear comforting Baby Bear at a fire. Later in Lord Farquaad's (John Lithgow) castle, as he watches Fiona on the mirror you see Mama Bear as a rug, skinned and laying on the floor. No True Scot Fact: Mike Myers originally voiced Shrek with his natural speaking voice before the film was test-screened. Then he tried country Canadian accents for Shrek. However, after viewing a rough cut of the film, he felt that something was missing from his performance, and re-recorded all of his lines with a Scottish accent, based on the voice his mother used when reading him bedtime stories as a child. The original voice can still be heard in the technical goofs on the DVD. Donkey and Dory (Finding Nemo) have the same vibe/personality, and the same relationship to Shrek and Marlin. I recently watched you react to Finding Nemo and Finding Dory, and watching this one really brought those parallels home. Yes I picked at flower petals after watching this movie, were they ever correct? No. Did I often deliberately count them before starting to get the result I wanted? Of course.

I remember hearing an interesting theory somewhere that the Dragoness was once also a princess. If you look at the book Shrek was reading in the opening the princess depicted is blond, not a redhead like Fiona. And yet in the sequel we see the continuation of the book showing a depiction of Fiona in both forms complete with her red hair. So it's possible the other princess had a similar curse like Fiona that turned her into a dragon. But no one realized a dragon could be a pincess since all the knights that came would have been trying to follow the classic trope of saving a princess FROM a dragon. And at first she was forced to kill them in self defence. But eventually the time on her curse ran out and she became trapped as a dragoness forever.

I really love how this was one of the first movies to subvert the fairy tale stories. Shrek is not the typical hero & Fiona isn't the typical princess. Even after all these years the humor & the story still holds up.

I love how Donkey inadvertently rolls a Nat 20 on his Charisma check and essentially seduces the dragon into not killing him. And then later, she ends up helping him and Shrek. Of course, with the fact that they end up in a relationship afterwards, it seems that there may have been some genuine chemistry there anyway. Also, while the Fairy Godmother who cast the spell on Fiona isn't technically a witch, she's definitely something that rhymes with witch. 🤣

Something interesting about Shrek that you might not know, as he was of originally going to be voiced by Chris Farley, but then he passed away, so they brought in Mike Myers to redo all of his lines. Also, DreamWorks made this movie to make fun of Disney.

I’m one of the few people who love the first movie more than the sequel, but it’s only because I’ve seen the sequel so many times that I’m burned out on it. Plus, the first has more classic nostalgia.❤❤❤

If there is one thing Shrek does really well, it's surprising its audience with how genuinely badass some of its action scenes are. Shrek leading the Dragon around the pillars to trap it was a big brain move.

That's so strange to watch Shrek with Shrek having this voice since I'm russian and our dub have a different voice. I mean the huge difference. And so I still get used to it even it's still sounds awkwardly off for me T.T

So if im not mistaken I remember that back when this movie was being produced one of the people working on the film had beef with another guy not sure how he related to this BUT the name picked "Fark Wad" was literally a way of covering up "F*ck Wad" if you say it fast you can hear it. That is definitely something as a kid went over my head 🤦‍♂️🤣 thats crazy haha

Yeah unless the person has spent half their life believing they’re ugly and that the person they love would never love them for who they are. Obviously if a person has a condition it should come from them, but Fiona is so insecure and trapped in this idea that Shrek would never accept her. I think if Donkey knows Shrek would adore that aspect of her and Fiona would never admit it to Shrek in fear of rejection, I think it’d be fine to tell him. But that’s just my view 🤷‍♂️

what really bothered me about this movie was the fact that Peter Pan was going to sell Tinkerbell. That would be like Ratchet selling Clank or Ash selling Pikachu. It just didn't sit well with me.
