By our standards Shrek's parents were horrible. But remember, they were ogres. That's likely the way they were raised, as were their parents, and the cruelty is to get them used to the harsh treatment they will receive from the outside world.

But when you think about it in that timeline those Ogres were forced to unite and break their tradition because a high superpower was too powerful for any Ogre to fight alone! In the real timeline without that superpower the Ogre's were miles from each other in their own worlds and had no need to seek each other out or know of each others existence. It's an interesting, beautiful story especially how it puts more appreciation about the people who's born in a way that triggers insecurity and loneliness. Despite how little he thinks of himself deserving happiness and love, he ended up marrying a princess who changed herself to be with him and have a family with her. What makes it interesting is if you think deeper about it, it almost seems like a perpetual cycle of hostility. The humans view the ogres as monsters and treat them as such, so the ogres begin raising their young to expect that hostility and do what is necessary to scare off would-be attackers, but that fearsome and horrifying image only serves as confirmation to the humans' misconception of what ogres are, which leads to them increasing their hostility and reducing the possibility of sympathizers, which leads to the ogres taking up even more extreme lessons to their children so that they can survive the hostility they'll inevitably be exposed to, which comes right back around to becoming even more monster-like to unintentionally fit the narrative humans imposed upon them in the first place. Inevitably, you end up with a situation where, generations later, nobody is really right or wrong. The humans who started the misconception very likely aren't around anymore, which leaves the modern day humans, who had no control over what their ancestors did, and can't be blamed for going by what they're taught and what they witness that confirms the validity of their teachings, and the ogres similarly can't be blamed for going by what they're taught to survive the inevitable hostility, which is inevitably confirmed by the humans who rally together to try to fend them off.

When I first watched the musical. I took this as a huge metaphor for being a person of color, living in america. I'm constantly being told things are going to be hard for me and I need to be tough enough to survive it

damn when I was a kid shrek was one of my favorite characters I knew he must have had a f** up background since he mentions it in shrek 1 and 3 but I had no idea his background was this sad and depressing

If Shrek’s father makes an appearance in a 5th, I would like to see them argue witch each other, with his Dad being disappointed, while Shrek would just be annoyed and resentful that he’s here.

I mean, ogres are ogres. The main sad part in Shrek is him clearly having a heart. Shrek isn't your average ogre though. He really does have layers.

Can you do a video about Audrey's full story? Because like me, there are others Descendants fans who are curious if Audrey was expected by her family to be queen of Auradon, and her grandmother Queen Leah said "A lifetime of planes Gone!" when King Ben proposed to Mal to be his wife and Queen.

I mean shrek is inspiring, his backstory teaches us that no matter the adversity theown in your direction, you can always come out of it alive. And if that doesn't say something idk what does.

Ehy Wotso, can you do a video about how Shrek never borning led to the alternate reality we see in the fourth movie? I mean, it'd be interesting to find an explanation as to why Puss became fat or as to why the Muffin Man now organizes gladiator fights, as well as answering questions like where did characters like the Fairy Godmother and Lord Farquaad go? My personal theory is that it's not just the disappearance of Shrek that led to that future, but also the fact that Rumpelstiltskin retains his memories, inclining him to hate all the ogres or to ruin Shrek's old friends' lifes somehow. But I'd like to hear your ideas in a video too.

In the early drafts of the first Shrek film, Shrek's depressing backstory was going to involve him in his teen years trying to save a donkey from a wicked witch. This idea was around when Chris Farley was still cast as Shrek before his death in 1997

this a example of having parents that had a old fashion way of raising kids, like they were born in a different time of traditional family values. Shrek's parents are like this, they raised him by tradition. but Shrek is like most of us who raises kids differently not entirely on tradition but by the new modern way of thinking.
