I can't watch most adult animated films because of the overuse of nostalgia. I'm not sure if you are aware of Invader Zim, but I'll use the 2019 movie as an example. The creator mostly decided to bring it back for one last hurrah after being off air since 2002. In other words, it was nothing more but one big nostalgic wave and it was utterly a disappointment.

It’s also that Dreamworks has this sense of a “hit or a miss” charm with their films. It feels more authentic than the overused formula Disney movies follow. The animation is insanely impressive for the era. @@trequor I think Shrek showed a huge leap in facial expressions and what you could do with character and action movement compared to previous animations, it bring the characters to life so much more. Shrek teaches us about what true love really is. Some people these days expect you to be perfect and when they see a few minor flaws in you, they get turned off and look for someone else, who they think is their “perfect match”; when in reality no one is perfect. Shrek accepted Fiona despite all of her flaws and actually found the beauty in them. Fiona thought she needed to put her best face on to be loved by someone, when all she really needed was to love herself and find someone who would love her for who she is. I think the quote from the movie, God’s not dead can summarize this up well, “To the wrong person you will never have any worth. To the right person you will mean everything.”

Shrek got feminism right. Instead of portraying Fiona as this "independent woman who don't need no man" stereotype, they just showed her being a human, or rather, an ogre. A person with more depth like anyone else. She could be elegant as a princess, but she has her favorite types of foods, enjoys being an ogre like Shrek, sometimes getting dirty, and being really capable as a fighter. A woman who can kick butt, love unique things, and still like being elegant with a healthy dose of gentleness and kindness should be considered attractive by lots of standards. Something I learned about getting married was that my wife is a person just the same as me, and living together means getting to know the real her, as a person, having typical human needs, dreams, dislikes, fears, likes, and so forth. We learn to love these little things we do, and I find that's likely what Shrek and Fiona saw in each other. First appearance and impressions are important on dates because they don't distract you as much from allowing you to communicate and get to know each other at first, but you find that falling in love has more to do with the little things you find in their character. To sum it up, I like that Fiona defies some common feminist and damsel stereotypes while finding a middle-ground in portraying her as a sympathetic person who finds love in someone who also felt like everyone judged him for his appearance. That's beautiful. The move didn't start off with a beautiful, elegant princess. It started off with a misunderstood, ugly-looking ogre, and we the audience came to love him despite first impressions. Amazing, isn't it?

Shrek subverts the watcher of a “traditional” animated movie experience in exchange for raw, grounded, down to earth character study of Shrek and how he shuts out the world for shutting him out. Only to have Shrek reject the cliche fairytale ending that farquad wanted with Fiona for an untraditional fairytale ending with him. This went perfectly along with the rebellious attitude towards the norm back in the late 90s n early 2000s. Shrek is unironically a masterclass in storytelling fr fr.

Shrek only gets better with time unlike every other movie. I remember paying no attention to it as a child when it first came out and now rewatching them as an adult almost every single scene is comedically genius, the animation still holds up, and all the references are iconic. I usually feel the oposite when I rewatch childhood favorites. As ugly as Shrek is the movie is truly a work of art.
The film entirely changed mainstream animation and is a masterclass in subverting tropes whilst managing to adhere to conventions. The music is so well chosen, and it can be enjoyed by all ages due to the excellent script. We still see so many other films try and fail to emulate what it achieved.

Shrek being an ogre and scaring people and Gru being an evil villain who steals things. In the end they’re actually the hero and not the villain, Shrek saves Fiona after realizing he loves and cares for her, next they go on a honeymoon and still have to figure things out. Gru is kinda the same, he ends up saving the girls he adopted from his rival and becomes a dad, a movie later and he becomes a spy to take down villains.
