In this Shrewsbury Then and now I'm standing underneath the old market hall looking east towards where Market Street runs in front of Shrewsbury Museum and Art gallery. Originally named the Market Hall or Market House it was built in 1596
By the early 1800's the ground floor under croft (where this view was taken from) became the location for Saturday corn market, the corn market moved to a purpose-built corn exchange and in 1867 the building became known as the old market hall.
in 2004 it had a major restoration to convert it to an arts venue and cafe showcasing films.
In the 1920's view the shop on the left is Robinson & Co Watchmakers Silversmiths. the shop on the right is Adnitt Booksellers Stationers. The car parked in front of that shop is a Fiat Tipo 2B Dorsay-Torpedo.
In the 2024 view we can see C.W. Sellors and jewellers and to the right is Barbour, a country wear clothing shop.
To the left of the view is Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, a building which was originally a Music Hall but was changed to the museum and officially opened until 17 September 2015.
Do you have any memories of this area ?

"A truly unique way to see changes in time using two perfectly lined up images, one old & one new." Best viewed on a smart TV or large screen in full screen mode.
Past & Present - in fading Photographs.
High quality resolution fading photos showing local scenes as they were and how they are today from exactly the same view point. Then and now, Now and then, Past and Present, Old and New, Before and After. Call it what you want, just try one and see the effect!
The presentations you can see here are the result of many hours of work put in by myself ensuring that the old and new photographs line up precisely, I don't publish any if I'm not 100% happy with the match.
Best viewed on a large computer screen or smart TV as this is recorded in 4K resolution with great music so a real waste watching it on a small phone screen. Did you know you can cast it to your smart tv from the KZbin app?
