Did you find the shrimp boullion at H‑E‑B ?
@rhilton18819 жыл бұрын
Mexlycan, I made soup using your recipe yesterday. Wow, it came out great! I used all of your suggested ingredients, but I cut the potatoes, onions, and celery, etc., in smaller pieces than you showed. The only ingredient I couldn't find was the shrimp bullion cubes. The store probably had them somewhere, but I didn't have the patience to find them. I also added about a teaspoon of cumin (comino) to the recipe for that distinctive taste. Be careful if you add cumin. It's a very powerful spice and you don't want to overwhelm the taste of the dish. Instead of using bullion cubes, try this... Since the recipe calls for raw shrimp, instead of throwing away the shrimp husks after peeling them, put them in a small sauce pan and boil them for about 45 minutes, and you'll have some shrimp-flavored broth to use. I used enough water to cover the husks, and poured about 2 cups of broth into the soup. The first thing I did was to peel the shrimp, and I boiled the husks while preparing the rest of the dish. My wife, who's Hispanic, pronounced this dish "excellent," and the 2 chiles made it just right for spiciness. We're used to eating spicy food, so if you're not, cut back to using one, or even 1/2 of a chile in your soup. Thanks for this delicious recipe! Rick San Antonio, Texas

Great idea. As I was reading, I couldn't help wonder if you could put the shrimp shells in the stew with one if those little sacks like the tea ones. As everything is cooking, you will get the flavor. Just a thought.
@rhilton18818 жыл бұрын
Dark Wolf, if you have a large enough tea ball, yes, that would work. But, the recipe calls for 2 pounds of shrimp with shells. After you remove the shells, you have quite a pile of shrimp shells. I think it would be simpler to just put the shells in about 2 cups of water, boil them for about 20 minutes, and you then have some shrimp-flavored broth to put in your soup. It adds another layer of flavor to an already delicious soup. Oh, I forgot to mention that I like to rinse off the shells with running water prior to boiling them.

Thank you so much for the tip Rick. I don’t currently have shrimp bouillon but really want to make this.
@yupitsyourmom31934 жыл бұрын
@@darkwolf06vheb5 You can actually put the cooked shrimp shells in a blender with a little of the broth and blend until smooth, put it through a mesh strainer to remove large pieces and add the blended broth to your soup, delicious flavor and better than bouillon.

OH MY GOSH!!! I love this recipe....and the video too...LOL We sometimes eat a restaurant here in Dallas, a Mexican seafood restaurant in the East Dallas area. They have the most amazing soup, and we love it, but we can't always get over there to the restaurant, and of course they don't want to give out their recipe. THIS IS THE SOUP!!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! Now I can make their soup at home. If anyone out there is wondering about this soup? Just try it, with a nice crusty type bread, or crackers. This is a can't fail recipe.....I'm serious. Thank you again for sharing the recipe and the "how to" video.

There was a restaurant chain in the Valley called the Roundup. There was one in Pharr, and one in McAllen. They had a similar soup called "Mariscos del Mar." Every spoonful had fish and shrimp in it and it was simply delicious. I'm sorry to say that the Roundup restaurant closed years ago, but I still think of that great stuff!

Mexlycan Filico, I made your soup yesterday which just some minor changes (didn't add potatoes and instead added sliced carrots, Italian squash, sliced the celery into smaller pieces and added more than one, cut the cilantro into smaller pieces and used only one Serrano pepper) and the soup came out absolutely delicious! Thank you for your detailed step by step instructions! They were super easy to follow! I totally recommend this to everyone but agree with the previous comment from Rick Hilton, if you're not used to eating spicy food, cut back the Serrano pepper drastically to 1/2 and pepper and remove the seeds inside before adding to the mix. Gratefully from a South Texas girl living in an Arizona world!Josie Nuño
@rhilton18817 жыл бұрын
Josie, sorry, didn't see your comment until today. I found that the Serrano peppers are variable in heat. Sometimes you get hot ones, and sometimes you don't. We've been making the soup lately with 3 peppers, which is spicy hot enough for us. On a cold day, this soup hits the spot! We love potatoes and have not tampered much with the original ingredients, but substitutions as you suggest will be just as delicious. It's hard to get good Tex-Mex food in Arizona, eh? : )

Josie, I think any white fish will work, tilapia, cod, snapper, etc. V8 is a minor ingredient, so it's not a huge omission, but try to have some on hand next time. I think it makes a difference.
