for the shroomless hop shortcut, some people say "hold down after hopping to get more air". hot take: i tested it, and holding down does nothing here. i even got the shortcut 3/3 while holding up on the stick. so just keep your stick in the neutral position. the shortcut is very hard. my advice if you fail it: record a clip, and check for 3 things: - did your mini turbo come out just before the line? - were you positioned far enough to the right? - did you neutral hop? (don't touch the left stick when you hop) i recommend practicing on a medium weight (e.g. mario), mach 8, leaf tires, and cloud glider. this combo has enough speed to execute the shortcut. if your combo is too slow, you will fail even if you did everything right :(

Neutral hopping actually jumps higher so you should do that every time

@@MeesterTweester I thought that too. but the purpose of my testing was to check that assumption, and it seems false. I've also tested on other tracks like Hyrule circuit nisc and mushroom gorge gap cut. it appears that neutral hop does not gain more air nor distance. it just sets up the best alignment in most cases. but there are times where you don't neutral hop. for mushroom gorge its better to left hop the gap cut if you're not hopping the fence. for Hyrule circuit you can slight left hop to dodge the plant on lap 3. Also on mushroom gorge for the nisc at the start of the lap, you do a right hop.

@@Shortcat321 Neutral hop does get a little bit more air. Might have something to do with how the kart tilts if you hold a direction. But yeah some situations you shouldn't.

do you know where I can find video proof of neutral hop having more air? im open to believing it again, its just that I've never seen proof, and all signs point to choosing your hop direction based on alignment. also I tested 3 hop directions on the Hyrule circuit nisc and slowed it down, and the jump heights look identical. I haven’t tried it yet but, the full nisc might be possible on slower builds depending on how many coins you have.

I've personally done about 40+ perfect attempts with the slowest combo and 10 coins, and the trick just never happens. I get a hop and that's it. Maybe it is possible, but I'm decent at the shortcut with a faster combo so I know I'm not just messing it up.

Wait, how'd you even get the super mini turbo consistent? I tried it on a similar combo (Lemmy+Mr. Scooty+Roller+Cloud Glider), and I can't really get the super mini turbo up consistently without taking a super awkward line to increase the turn angle... And even then, often I fall short even with holding the stick back, let alone getting the trick, which seems essentially impossible. How'd you get it consistently at that angle? I'm really confused...

So far I usually try it as follows: Softdrift into the shortcut (I usually end up angled around 105 degrees off the road) As soon as I reach the blue line, release the stick and hop, then try hopping again once I hit the ramp. 95% of the time, I still end up short of the platform, despite getting the SMT...

You miss an item box, but it's about equal speed and you temporarily end up ahead by a bit. I've used this shroomless cut to temporarily get ahead and hit somebody with my trail item before they could pass me. Super niche, but yeah it's more fun than it is useful

Yes. I only go for it if I'm using at least a mid speed combo. If my alignment is good, I make it most of the time. But more often than not I prefer the item box, or already have a mushroom to take it
