I have been trying to decide between the big dummy and the fat tire version the big fat dummy. I live in northwestern wisconsin and we get lots of snow and there are lots of dirt roads. That and the fact that i am on the heavy side myself. But after watching this I think I might just go with the regular big dummy because all the bike shops in the area have regular tires and tubes on the shelf (during normal non pandemic times) but few have fat tire bikes and tires and tube to fix them. I hope someday when this is all over to take a 5000 mile ride around the country and unless im going to carry all the tubes and tires and stuff I need for the fat tire one I dont know if I will find everything I would need in the stores in the middle of nowhere.

If you use a bike with a 3x10 system you have to change the chain at least every 2k miles and the rear sprocket every 4k as it wears out. And 2 or 4k miles is nothing if you use it on a daily basis. So if you plan to use your bike as replacement for your car then stock a lot of spares: rear hubs, spokes, tubes, tires, etc. . Maybe even think about a hub gear like Roloff for its longevity.

Having a secondary mode of transport is always positive but labeling it as an SHTF vehicle is kinda a misnomer simply because every person who has ever bike packed or bike touring is technically considered a prepper due to all the camping (survival) gear used.

The way you could easily upgrade this that would help you save calories and have a portable power supply would be by converting it to an ebike. It will still function as needed even with a flat battery but you'll be able to cycle an easy 60km (40 miles) without exerting yourself. Spare batteries can be easily made by taking apart other batteries and you can charge the battery over a period of a couple days or so in your home base/camp then cycle out and recon/gather supplies. It's not hard to get an ebike to travel at 30-60kph (20-40mph)
@CargoBikeCowboy2 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you are saying, except, this bicycle already weighs 55 lbs, dry. If you add electric motor, batteries, etc. It increases the weight you would have to pedal in the event that your Battery died. Most e bike weigh in around 70 lbs, I have had conversations with e bike owners about pedaling them home with a dead battery. They all same the same thing, it sucks. Most e bikes do not have the gear range of the Surly Big Dummy. The Big Dummy has a triple chain ring on the crank and 10 cogs on the cassette.

BUG OUT BICYCLE... Mountain Bikes for use as a Bug Out bicycle are often over looked there very effective and useful for anything from a ZOMBIE attack or a Apocalyptic traffic jam or any other type of road block-aid you may fined your self into... there somewhat under-discussed if ever as an option and an east mode of transportation, with somewhere around 47.5 million sold in the united states there should be a few around but why wait get your bug out bike ready to ride now and get out there and get some of that much needed exercise god knows I can use some... there 3 time faster then walking and average 10 mph to 14 mph with ease walking at best without a load or back pack were looking at apx 3 mph to a speedy 4 mph to evacuate your little disaster scenario so why not turn your bicycle into a bad ass customized for use as a Emergency death machine vehicle... They are also QUIET shhhh, lots of available options too like adding a bike trailer baskets or racks of all types to hold your gear... you can add all type of rack, baskets or trailers if you like or just you and your back pack what ever you feel comfortable with, make sure you have an extra tire or two and a extra tube and a good patch kit and a small air pump, now a bit more on the bike itself I recommend a good mountain bike one easy to repair and not a complex one in case something happens and you need parts that are east to acquire... now for the color I don't like anything easy to spot or shiny and I go with flat olive green I use olive drab green like army green in a spray can of self-etching primer pretty much making it invisible in the woods or parked next to a bush and I don't have a bike with a suspension it goes back to the what if a breaks and finding parts, right now I'm just having fun but this topic did come up and this is a very fun project and I'm painting my bike anyway so theres that ya fun for me whoopee lol... so there's a ton of options for you to fit your own needs and if your bugging out in a vehicle a bike is a great back up WHEN YOU DO RUN OUT OF GAS so tie one on the top and you're off on a adventure... My wish is to have a Engine Motor Kit 100 CC 2-Stroke Gas Petrol Motorized Bike Bicycle Motor Engine Kit Full Set DIY Upgrade Bike Bicycle Conversion Kit (36 Tooth Sprocket) installed when needed and I'm ready to bug out these kits are complete and seem to work at least for a little time and the thing is if finding gas becomes an issue you can always remove the kit and go back to using the pedals without any problems, the cost for the kits are mostly always under 250.00 and that's not a bad option to get you moving out a lot faster just remember the added speed of a motor is a trade off in noise... Added more options for front and rear baskets panniers and racks, theres 100's of options in any combination you can think of...
