What do you do when the SHTF happens and you need to bug out? First you need Water and food And then you need shelter and rest. Sleeping bags you get what you pay for in warmth to weight ration. If you can handle more weight you can save a little in cost. Down is always the greatest warmth to weight ration (but you have to be careful with keeping it dry). GI sleep systems or wiggies vacuum packed survival bags are a great heavier but more durable option.

Thanks for posting this. Wifey and i could suck it up but as a family head, im learning that sleep systems are very important, even without a true emergency.😅

You don’t have a choice. At some point you WILL run out of food and water. Or maybe… the feds are going door to door doing their thing and you need to bug out 🤔

Right now, I have an ESS Recon 5 (-4° F) that's synthetic, boots friendly, built-in water resistant, and weighs 5 lbs. Packs pretty small for synthetic and below zero bag. But I don't know if I trust it long-term like you can more bombproof options like the MSS. I don't trust the zipper. I just liked the "small" size. (It's about the size of a basketball fully compressed. Supposedly, they say long-term compression won't harm the insulation rating....

generally you sacrifice durability for weight. I looked at the specs of your bag and it has great reviews. Sounds like a great option. Does it have snaps or velcro as a backup to the zipper?

@HomesteadReliance It has velcro, I believe. So far, the zipper has been good and it's a center zipper which is nice. The little pull tab ripped right off first pull but the zipper itself has been holding up.

I am going to have to check those out as they may be a better alternative to the gI patrol bags and a better deal than the wiggy’s bags @@pennsyltuckyreb9800

@HomesteadReliance Keep in mind the temperature rating is more considered with military clothing on.... so you do need to beef up the interior insulation to get the bag down to the stated rating still being warm. I actually also carry in my gear a 2lb wool "patoo" used in Afghanistan/Pakistan and cotton "lungi" sheet. Together, inside the bag, they make things a lot warmer while also having the versatility of a "wool blanket" without the bulk and weight.

thanks for the information. I also think a lot of commercial bags are dependent on some clothing inside the bag, but you are correct that the GI sleep system does require all the clothing. Your Wool "patio" idea is a good one! Wool to me is like wood fire heat...Nothing like it. I generally have wool base layer on as they are antimicrobial and better against melting (on your skin) like synthetics. @@pennsyltuckyreb9800

You have to remember I’m old and back in the day there was no low cost generic outdoor and survival gear. Some of the current Walmart ozark trail stuff is really not that bad. It’s not the best but most will get the job done.

Not a good idea to chamber a live round before attaching the suppressor to the end of the barrel. Attach the suppressor first, THEN chamber the round.
