Also keep in mind that if the other person listening doesn't have a tone in at all they can hear you and tones are also easily scanned for.

Correct. The point I was getting at was, for local comms (like within a neighborhood) 0.5w radios are a good way to keep your footprint small.

We are both hams..... when we are out shopping we use the FRS 1/2 watt radios to keep the foot print SMALL. I do scan with the ham HT to hear what is going on in the area.....

Frs is now 2 watts. The comment about the sub audible tones is incorrect the survival tone is so you don't hear others on the frequency you're using it does not prevent them from hearing you if they're not running a sub audible tone they can hear you. The comment about the radios with more than 16 channel, those are the same frequencies repackaged with different tones. The original half watt FRS radios 1 through 7 was gmrs and FRS, 8314 were half watt FRS only, and the remaining 15 through 22 are the remaining channels of gmrs. There are only 16 gmrs frequencies.
