Those "filters" in the nozzles are not filters. They are flame arresters. They prevent ignited vapors from traveling into the can and blowing it up. (see ASTM F-852 and F-839)

Just a little tidbit of info, those three handles serve a purpose, the one in the middle is for a single person carrying the can, it is centered for balance, the outer two handles are meant for when two people carry a can, one on each side, again this way it is balanced.

I installed an 80 gallon auxiliary Diesel tank on the bed of my F-350, it’s low profile Can’t even tell it’s there. 80 gallons combined with the 30 gallon tank in the truck at 20 MPG on the highway I have a range of approx. 2200 miles.

Remember 10.5 lbs empty plus the added gas is what 6 pounds per gallon so that’s 52.5 lbs which is no problem for a young strapping buck but as you get older that’s a lot of weight to hold steady for the amount of time it takes to empty that can. If you’re going this route and not as tough as you used to be I suggest a battery operated pump to assist you.

Those Jerry cans are excellent. I bought a few at the local surplus store for $5 each. I sandblasted-off some superficial rust, gave them a good coat of primer and pant, and they were as good as new. They dated from 1951.

The Jerrycan was designed by the German Army in about 1936 which included that star pattern on the side. There is also a small hump which is above the pouring spout where you would think no gas could be stored. Its purpose is so that the can will float even when full. The German Army one had a plastic liner so that either fuel or water could be carried in it. It became known as the Jerrycan because the British forces fighting in the Dessert Campaign would take them from the Germans to replace for their own fuel cans which would always leak due to being a really bad design. The British soldiers nickname for a German was a Jerry hence Jerry's-can or Jerrycan. The British started manufacturing themselves and supplied most of them for the Americans and the British forces in the Western field campaign.

Back in the '70s when we had gas shortages, I would fill my car with gas from army cans like these at my father's. (He was a prepper who had everything!) Even though gasoline contains better additives today, it still isn't meant for long term storage. In addition to adding a stabilizer, it would be wise to keep a few spare fuel filters on hand for a quick change-out if it becomes necessary. (I learned this the hard way!)

I have a half a dozen of the old style metal cans with the lid that seals. These were made before they started putting out the plastic ones. I keep them full but I rotate the fuel over time. I use the fuel in my Coleman stoves, I have two of them. We have hurricanes down here. I have lived through many of them during my lifetime. The longest power outage one time was almost 3 weeks. I am pretty much off the grid prepared. If SHTF really hits the fan, a lot of people are going to be in trouble.

I have an old duel fuel Coleman lantern. I have never used gas in it. Only camp fuel. I have always wondered if the ethanol in fuel now would gum up the works on the lantern so I've never tried it. And to be honest, I don't see a reason to put gas in a lantern. I got more important things to put gas in other than lantern. And as camp fuel, it tends to have a shelf life matching that of God if left unopened. Seriously, rocks have shorter shelf lives than pure camp fuel. LOL

The Original WWII Jerry can is a marvel of engineering and everything about the can serves a purpose for which it's designed. The most important feature is the recessed welds around the can. it's shape, the handles, the spout, that additional spout was designed much latter, even the sides of the can with those geometric shapes on the sides. The thickness of the can protects against most bumps and drops to prevent leaking. The welds being recessed prevent bumps from breaking the welds The shape of the can allows for better stacking and transport The three handles gives so many carrying options The geometric shape and indentations allow for expansion in case of a drop and temperature changes Even that hump that is higher behind the handle allows for some expansion and movement in case of a drop The spout with it's breather tube allows for liquid to be poured smoothly. The cap with it's cantilever design to seal the can and even when you opened the can the cap would lock in the open position to prevent it from closing while you poured out your liquid. The original ones were plastic lined so they could carry water and prevent rusting from the inside out. If you want to transport fuel in the safest can ever designed you would want a Jerry can that is perfect copy of the original. I have used the Nato ones and to be honest they are a PITA. One handle, extra large opening. They messed with a perfect design and FUBAR'd it all up.

The Scepter Olive Drab Military Fuel cans are the best. 20L, designed to melt not explode. Won’t rust, extremely strong, they do expand and contract in the heat. You will need a pour spout or battery operated pump and a big fuel wrench to unscrew the lid. I’ve got 10 of them that I’ve been using on all our hunting and fishing and camping trips since 2001, no issues and still working like they were on day one. They are $100 or so nowadays I noticed. Ouch.

A side comment about gas spillage and air. Many liquid storage containers have a small hole right about the spout to allow air to enter. This allows for improved pore flow as air can relieve the vacuum. But additionally, as you are pouring fuel and it leaks around the spout, the first thing I would check is the seal on the spout. They tend to be made of rubber and they dry rot over time. Inspection of the gaskets / seal is just something you should do a few times a year. And it also helps to lub the seal with just use. Leave the spout sitting on the shelf for a year or two and your probably will have a degraded seal when you do need to use it.

Stabil can keep gasoline usable for about 2 years. If your gasoline goes "flat", use it 50-50 with new gasoline. Diesel lasts 7+ years with a stabilizer and you can buy it without road tax as long as you are using it for an off road purpose such as a tractor, generator, etc.

I've been using Bundeswehr canisters from the 70s for a long time. and can use this for decades. I personally prefer the 20 liter. the wigen full of about 22kilograms, in contrast to the 30litre US canisters which are heavy dan schun. In addition, filling with 20s is easier in my opinion with the accessories.

The air vent inside the filler is not to let air out it is to let air in, as the petrol comes out it must be replaced by air or you form a vacuum and petrol flow slows, the 30lt cans have that indent in the cap to use to unscrew the air bleed valve and the pattern on the side of the can is to give it a bit of stiffness so it does not flex all the time like an old kerosine tin form years gone by, other than that it was very helpful for me.

Good video. But 2 things. One you never touched on fuel preservatives like PRI-G. Two you didn't touch on the easiest way to fuel up a vehicle from one of these cans. I won't use the spouts for 2 reasons. One the can is heavy when full and after a full day is a real bear to hold in place while fueling. Two every spout I have seen leaks. Even brand new ones. So I went old school, I use a siphon hose. You can get a siphon hose with the jiggler end on it for under 10 bucks. Place the can on the car or truck, place hose in gas tank. Jiggler end in gas can shake and before you know it you have flow. You can then sit back and do other things like pay attention to your surroundings. I have found that with the one I use I can empty a wavian can in about 4 minutes or so. The small amount of gas left in the can is minimal like half a can of soup in volume. If your doing multiple cans a funnel is handy to put all the left over in one can to use later. Hope these tips help somone out. Have a merry Christmas.

FYI the DOzt doesn’t not require diesel cans to be DOT approved, but if you’re gonna use a tank in your truck as a 2nd tank, get one that is DOT certified, so if you get stopped by the DOT & they ask abt it you can show em the tag & not have to scramble to for the info on the regs on Diesel dot restrictions.

The Latvia metal cans ... The spout is awkward to use and the spout holder is plastic. So it will break from either use or dry rot in a few years. This handle for the spout appears to be riveted to the can making a replacement holder difficult even if you could get them. And finally the spout once cradled in the holder blocks the carry handle for the gas can. Making it an awkward and heavy five gallon carry. It is for these reasons that these are likely surplus. The Latvia military probably realized their issues in the field and surplused their entire inventory which Sportsman Guide picked up for a song.

Those bendable nozzles got air holes at the side pointing to the handles of the can, that's why the dripping in the video. Going slow may prevent that. Got 4 10l cans for prepping and actually to save on fuel prices, but the forever stinking nozzle spoils it, you don't want to put that thing in your car in peace times, it will stink for weeks to come! That thing with a valve makes the bendable portion unnecessarry, but the complicated mechanism will hold even more gas to stink. Thinking about to go for a funnel...

heating and cooling of metal cans causes condensation. put grease on the end of a stick and stick it in the deepest part of the can. If water is in your gas it will stick to the grease when you pull the stick out. Check your gas if its stored in a metal can.

Like the Jerry Cans....but they are useless without a good seal for the cap and the spout. I have had a surplus jerry can and a new jerry can for several years. The rubber gasket for the lid and for the spout gets hard in a couple months and they will start to leak. Loose your gasket (like I did) and its really bad! Just a reminder, keep extra gaskets handy. Oh, and the design on the side of the jerry can was to strengthen the sides so it wouldn’t bulge under pressure in hot weather. Nice Review!

Turn the can upside down. The vent hole is on the bottom of the spout and will leak if used in the normal position. You can increase the size of the vent hole to speed up the dump.

The one disadvantage I've had with the NATO 20L cans is, No Handle in the back. 20L of gasoline in a metal can, gets heavy when you have to hold it higher than waist height and only have handles on the top near the spout.

Midwest Can Company Jerry Can is made in the same factory as the Wavian can, for half the price. Only difference is the pour spout is a civilian style spout and not the nato spout. But it is of a higher quality than a Walmart epa safety pour spout, and it has a flame risistance fill spout installed.

Also a good way to deal with very heavy gas cans, allows many to transfer gas from a large can safely. Use the larger diameter Jiggler if it will fit in the in the tank you're transferring to, be sure to check before you depend on it.

Great video. Yeah, about those "drips"... PLEASE inform those not familiar the hazards of dealing with gasoline in colder temps. Gas has a freezing temp of about 100℉, meaning it will still be liquid far colder than it takes to become injurious. Those drips can cause frostbite almost instantly! Nothing conducts heat faster than when wet, now you've got an extremely cold liquid in contact with your skin literally sucking the heat out of your flesh. Wear durable waterproof gloves and be extremely cautious!

I acquired new NATO OD green jerry vans from Europe for $89 ten years ago from CTD. They are worth it, the made in China ones will swell and leak fumes. Don’t forget the nozzle! 👍🏻🇺🇸

Does the cross shape recess in the big cap of the 30l can fit onto the bleed screw? So if so it would be a "two birds , one stone" cap. Perhaps the missing bleed screw has a metric thread (made in China) and due to this you can't put any inch screw with an O ring on it. Looks like an M8 (metric screw with 8mm) screw which is very similar to 5/16" screw BUT they differ in pitch and flank angle (60° metric and 55° whitworth). These "markings" are sheet metal beads to increase the stiffnes of sheet metal constructions. Wish everyone a belated HAPPY NEW YEAR and it is always a pleasure to watch this channel.

7:00, Locking Pin: Maybe you could remove that locking pin and use a steel cable and a padlock to discourage easy fuel theft if you have the tank locked to the outside of your vehicle? The gas now days dose not last very long couple months. But if SEA FOAM is put in can then filled it will extend the life of the gas by 5 or 6 times so 10 to 12 months. And it helps to keep engine gas or diesel running cleaner longer. Be Safe

Watch the Video from "Taryl Fixes All" from 08.08.2021. He tested 8 brands of fuel stabilizer for at least 19 months. The results are disappointing. Storing fuel (Premium without/few Ethanol) in an airtight metal can at a constant temperature is the best way to prevent degradation.

Keep it in a can or other sealed fuel safe container. Put fuel stabilizer in it, and preferably keep it in a temperature stable and dry environment. Then rotate the fuel so every few months or at minimum once a year, put the fuel in a vehicle and refill your cans with fresh fuel and stabilizer. Easy as that. No overly long video needed.

@@Athonite also I ran out to the shed to look at one and it is less than 100MON per 100 LL. Lead is definitely not good for Catalytic converters, leaded gas was 2-3 grams per gallon. Although quite a bit less, still lead will destroy the catalytic converters ability to function properly, but in a SHTF situation WTFC? It might be worth the risk to get your family to safety, cars are disposable if your life is in the balance. and my old cockroaches will be running long after the newer cars are in the scrap yard.

My understanding is that winter gas has more ethanol in it to prevent frozen gas lines. It'll attract moisture from the air inside the gas can/condensation and ruin the gas sooner and could start rust inside your gas can.

Gasoline and diesel fuel help me do everything quicker and more safely. I can do with out and survive but am not going to right now.

i have like 6 or 7 of the old cans oldest is dated 44 and newist is dated 87 wish i had gotten more when i had the chance to get them for $5 ea at an estate sale he had 10 of them each with a spout i got 4 of them there and got the rest from people moving or at yard sales

We just purchased Jerry Cans (Wavian 5.3Gallon) and would like to know if anyone has ideas for securely storing them so that thieves will give up if they attempt to steal them using things like bolt cutters. I can't weld but I know there are metal protectors for the cans. How secure are they? Any other thoughts? Thanks from a just-above-beginner-level prepper.

I recently placed orders for Christmas gifts and many of the companies are out of many varieties and prices are way way up, just like ammo, hard to restock when seeds are gone and the harvest just happened . eBay and Etsy still have survival seeds

The good old 20l Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister (Wehrmacht standard canister). Even in Germany, almost nobody knows that the thing is called that.

I went with the gas can that they use for off road vehicles etc kinda pricey but was worth it i think

So these military gas cans are better than your normal plastic gas cans. I have one of these military gas cans never used it

You should buy the green Wavian without the nozzles from Atlantic british. So much cheaper.

Sceptre are the cans used by the US and Canada... Polyethylene. I ave seen them run over by a Leopard no damage.

I got the 50l getting ready fill up go to the lake fill my boat up, hope they checked it and it dont leak

They should have put Cable attached to the caps so you don't loose the caps

I was hoping you would touch on the shelf life of fuel in storage. That seems to be the bigger issue. Do you just fill up a ton of cans and rotate the stock? Sounds like a bit of a pain in the butt to do all the time.
