You can turn the rice and beans into patties too. You can turn that bean soup mix into a beans. Thank you for showing people this. Btw I still think starting with beans and rice is best because it's the cheapest and easiest way to do it. I'm going to suggest buying a dehydrator and dehydrating bags of frozen vegetables too. Stock oatmeal, boullion, pancake mix, canned maple syrup, powdered milk, pasta sauce, and powdered drink mix with vitamin c. For the kids people might want to stock up on school workbooks at each grade level to in case they need to homeschool. Also stock bigger sizes for kids or you'll be sorry. If you garden grow herbs like stevia, chocolate mint, garlic, ginger, oregano, basil, fennel, etc. If you are afraid to can then dehydrate. Plant fruit trees and nut trees if you can. On a side note stock up on something to treat head lice, fleas and worms.
@711600006 жыл бұрын
I would stock up on canned fish. Tuna, salmon, sardines. All are cooked and edible right out of the can. I keep a large shelving unit filled with can goods that I rotate as I use so that at any given time there's canned food with several years of shelf life available. As a matter of fact most canned meats are edible right out of the can. I keep lots of cans of vienna sausages, ham, sandwich spreads, chili, stew, hash, soups, beany weenies, chicken, roast beef, tamales. Lot's of choices to go with rice and beans. If you have chickens you have a steady supply of eggs that can be preserved to last a year or more. Mix in the fresh vegetables you raise at home and you're likely to be better fed than most others.

Beans and rice and water need to be the foundation to any emergency food preparation. Low cost and long term viability are key. Great 2nd tier foods are powdered milk, instant oats, powdered eggs, pancake mix, canned veggies, and soups. Of course veggie seeds are important too for the real long term. Have a nice day.

Groovyman 1968.......It's better to can the beans and precook at least some rice and dehydrate it to save water and fuel, these items need water and time to cook and beans need at least some soaking, then a longer time cooking so I throw half cup of dried but washed beans to a pint canning jar fill to one inch with water and pressure can for 45 minutes. That way if I'm desperate I can eat them out of the jar, again I only can pints and half pints so there is no waste since keeping things from going bad might be a problem.

@@Vicki-sq4jw Cook the rice. Cook the beans. Dehydrate both. Easy to have a variety of beans along with the rice. Black beans, blackeye peas, green peas, etc. Don't need a lot of water. Roughly a cup of hot/boiling water for each cup of dried food. Much, much less than cooking dry beans from scratch. As to canning dried beans and peas, I like to do that too. For the reasons you mentioned. However, I prefer to follow the tested/approved guidelines. If pre-soaked overnight, rather than doing the "quick" soak, very little additional actual personal time is needed to remove doubt about the end product. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially during times that try the souls of mankind. Like you, I prefer to can in pints, too. Opened jars can be consumed before food spoils in grid-down.

@@Patriot1459J I don't eat pork so can't help you but I canned chicken and beef and lamb in pints. Some stews, some plain, some soup. I am scared of those canister things for a stove, (always been a chicken that way) and I'm on my own, don't know if I can get help either. I do have freeze dried food and if worse comes to worse but we still have hydro and water, I'll start with those and anything from the freezer I might have left. I also can (pressure canning) potatoes. I put up 40lbs this past week in jars that are large/small enough for just us 2 ppl. If more ppl are here, we can open more than one jar. So, I highly recommend canning smaller jars as keeping leftovers cool will be a problem. Spices and a large variety of them is an absolute necessity. If for no other reason, when our regular preps are low and we just might have to eat things that we normally most likely wouldn't look at as food, or know that our kids would have a total meltdown eating, I at least want to be able to make whatever it is, taste good... It's all in the spicing if you are going to enjoy your meal, regardless of what it is you are eating. As well as it really helps to keep your spirits up being able to have variation. PLUS spices will most definitely be a huge barter item, same with salt. I have also put away many lbs of canning salt, along with my canning preps. Canned rendered beef and pork fat, both for food preps, soap making, lighting and more. We are fortunate in that we already live off grid and have our permanent food storage in place but, we also have stocked several caches, if we for some reason would have to vacate in a hurry.

I recently packed my first 5 gallon bucket of beans & rice, seasonings, & canned chicken. While doing so it dawned on me that cooking for 20-30 minutes, 3 times a day would not only get old fast and require a lot of fuel for cooking, but also increase the chances of being discovered by looters, opportunists, or worse. So now my take on this is to either add beans & rice to the menu slowly throughout the week, or to simply keep them stored for an absolute worst case scenario. Having a diverse range of foods that can be cooked quickly or simply reheated could very well limit a life or death situation. Just some thoughts.

Keep in mind, those canning seals expire- they have a date on them for a reason-as my MIL found out. All her canning jars were sealed, cooled, and after a week stored. 3 months later, she was getting a bad smell from the storage room, canning seals had started releasing and food spoilage everywhere. She has been canning all her life. All these different foods, different batches were now inedible due to using seals past their expiration date (only one year past date!). She always thought those dates were pointless, not anymore! They dont make them the way they used to!
