I live in Colorado and have dealt with power outages for days, 2-3’ snow storms, fires and tornadoes. Not prepping for black out, bug in and bug out is just asking for trouble.

Lots of thoughts and feels on this topic. I prep for the top 3 most probable situations in my area. 1. Sudden Unemployment 2. Hurricanes. 3. Power disruption. I prepare accordingly for each. I also keep in mind one key principle: Circumstances trump preparedness. Your preparedness, no matter how well done may still fall short based on the situation.

question...DO YOU HAVE A CAR> yes. DOES YOUR CAR HAVE 4 GOOD TIRES? yes. Does your car have a spare tire? YES. Then you are a prepper too.

Well, I live in Louisiana. Prepping here means...do you like electricity after storms knock out the power over a dozen times per year? Do you like fresh fruits, vegetables, and real eggs? Clean water? Whiskey & wine? Fresh fish? Meat? I just planted over a dozen more fruit trees for a reason. I`ve gone broke and hungry before...got caught off guard in a town. Now I`m back in the boondocks to stay. I can feed myself here. I just topped off my solar batteries today...and a storm knocked out the power...again. We had 20 days without power in 2020 after two back-to-back hurricanes. Now my freezers, air conditioner etc runs on the sun. I was raised in the outdoors and on a large family farm. My ancestors were preppers by necessity, like me, and I practice a mix of old and new. My grandfather who helped raise me was born in the Louisiana woods in 1886. My first job was fur trapper.

A F5 tornado ripped through our town a few years ago and nearly destroyed it. Luckily our house got only slightly damaged. However we were without power for almost two weeks. The provisions we had on hand significant helped us.

I'm totally prepped for everything. I have been trying to explain to my born again Christian friend about the wars in Europe and the Middle East and what's about to happen in this world and he keeps telling me about the prophecies. I gave up.

I think when people criticize us that prep, they do so as a cope. In the event of an emergency they have failed themselves and their family. Deep down they know this and so they hope bad things never happen but we all know they do.

Prepping is why I got into EDC. I had a personal SHTF a few years ago. Lost my home amongst other things, well, I have a new home now but it is relevant. "I am still alive, I am still here. If I only have what is in my pockets and SHTF again, and for whatever reason I can't use/get my get home bag/bug out bag, what would I want on me? How can I transform standard EDC (key, wallet, phone) into something useful besides their intended use?" That is what ran through my mind and while I still don't have an answer, I am starting to think that DIY might be it.

For those that think prepping is a waste of time have never been through a natural disaster. Forget about all the civil unrest nonsense. We are talking basic needs for a period of time. Here's an example. I live in the Northeast, Sandy hit and I was without power for 2 weeks. I thought I was ready for that. Turns out I missed a few items. That has been corrected. We got hit with a 36" snow storm. My town had a tough time clearing the streets and we were stuck in the house for 2 days. The question you need to ask yourself is am I ready to handle these events. If not, you are doing a disservice to yourself and your family.

As a side note the CDC has a very comprehensive list for prepping for such events.

Louisiana here. My first life-threatening hurricane was Betsy in 1965. Went through two more in 2020. No power for 20 days. I built my own off-grid solar setup with the stimulus I received late in the year so I can have air conditioning, cook, and keep my freezer frozen. The food in my freezer isn`t from stores. Can`t lose it. I just planted over a dozen more fruit trees (and a big wine making kit).

To me, to be prepared is to have my mind prepared that i cannot be prepared enough for whatever comes. Improvise, adapt, overcome. Sure it all depends on where you live, but you must comprehend that if you must leave your home, all you have gathered to be prepped means nothing. So adaptibility is key. And also your mindset.

I remember I had to do a lot of SIFTING because imo a lot of what people had in their bugout bags were just not practical for me. I'll go over the ones I think 'are' important and ones that are unimportant. Fero rod (unimportant and very difficult to use), instead pack Bics (a pack of 6 ) Much much easier to use and you pretty much will never run out with a pack. Indefinite shelf life. Far easier to make a fire with a Bic. Even easier with a pack of 6. Peanut lighters (NO!!!!) Dangerous and easy to slip off your fingers and start a fire. Do not pack these. Dangerous. Fishing wire (nah). Crank radio (nope) or Crank flashlight (nope). People who pack these have never used a crank radio, it hecking sucks. Pots and Mountain mix (nope). Many of the seasoned veterans say you should bring QUICK FOOD, food you can easily eat and on-the-go because you will have not energy or time to watch water boil. ie protein bars, beef jerky, granola bars, all the snacks you'd actually eat. Signal mirror (nope) Datrex (nope). You will hate eating that. Pack dried food that tastes good. Lifestraw or Minisawyer (yes), car jumper (yes but do not put in a pouch in a backpack, keep it in the car), whistle (yes), compass (no), saw (yes), warm clothes (yes), rechargeable flashlights with proprietary batteries (no), flashlight that take regular batteries with a stack of batteries (yes). You likely will not have access to power. So bring a stack of batteries. Canned food you randomly bought at Costco (no), Canned food you tested a bunch and narrowed it down to ones you'd ACTUALLY eat (yes), Contractor garbage bags (Yes), multipurpose, good for storage but can also be used for cover Tire patch and tire fixing stuff (yes) - but leave it in the car. These do not need to be in a heavy pouch. Keep in in the car. Dude wipes (yes) Toothpaste, toothbrush, cologne, deodorant, dental floss, soap (yes) Firstaid (yes) Heavy backpack that you don't lug around (no), Keep things lightweight

Eating the lats is wild, lol. But yea, pretty sure you do. I remember removing a FULL bladder on a Javelina once. It's a wild pig basically. I was "extracting" it and some sharp shard of pelvic bone was jutting out and punctured it. So yea, if you don't know what you are doing then you'll have a real FUN time when you go up against that learning curve after the SHTF!

4 years ago I wanted canned food, not for prepping but because I wanted to eat it. It was sold out, they had the vegetarian option left. I thought "They must have just taken the meat out, that's still fine" but it wasn't fine, there was something wrong with it, like old milk is still milk just wrong.

When you talked about faith, it reminded me that Jesus taught the parable of the ten virgins. Five were wise and “prepped” for an extended wait, while the other five did NOT “prep” and faced some consequences when they went out to look for resources when they ran out. Faith without works is dead.

I agree with others stating there are different levels of prepping. I'm a first responder (fire/EMS), so it's essential for my family and I to be ready whenever a disaster occurs because I need to ensure my family is okay so that I can go on duty to help everyone else. That said, I keep 30 days worth of non-perishable food and water along with portable stoves and fuel to cook anything. Each car has a 3-day go-bag with emergency equipment and we keep one hanging on the door of our home.

I do have to watch it. Very close to hoarding, but I also gift them and sell somethings when new stuff comes out. That a lot of the issue is new stuff comes out, old stuff still works but damn it if I don't want the new items.

Thanks for this video X! This is definitely something people need to keep in the back of their minds. It's not always going to be unicorns and rainbows folks! What would you recommend for a way to communicate if things like cell phones or the Internet is down for a prolonged amount of time?
@stevecastellarin698
@stevecastellarin698 10 ай бұрын
@2ndPeterVBlack something that would be portable, possibly hand held. The thought is - if cell/satellite/etc communications are down, and you are say 1-5 miles apart from your spouse or kids, etc. What could you use that would have a strong chance of allowing that type of communication to say "hey - meet me at 'this' location", etc.

@2ndPeterVBlack You're absolutely correct Man! I may have more than enough for any typical "prepared" person, but I look it as extra investment. I can and have donated extra food to my friends and the truly needy. So I see it as investing in friends and loved ones. It's not about surviving a shtf global shutdown or apocalypse , it's about sharing through rough times, which are real daily events. Thanks Man. PS. I like your solar setup! I'm jealous.

There are definitely different levels of "prepping". I believe in being prepared for standard emergencies, the types I am likely to face where I live. I should be able to keep my family healthy, fed, warm and protected during things like hurricanes, blizzards and similar. I can't live my life fearing total socio-economical collapse and I certainly don't want to see the end of our government. I think there has to be a distinction between prepping and being a Doomsday level Prepper. Maybe we need a new term.

The truth, those actors on Doomsday Preppers would be dead in the first 30 days of WROL. Preppers was a catch phrase that came out of W2K which people thought if you had a weeks worth of supplies you were good or we're good the goverment is going to help us! Pipe dreams! If you think a weeks worth of supplies is good for SHTF don't waste your time. Survivalist take all scenarios into consideration as a possibility at any time, its a lifestyle. The difference between the 2 is like your house on fire and a choice between a fire extinguisher and a fire engine! Don't be fooled, no one's coming and the gov don't give a crap and when people get hungry they will eat your children! It doesn't take much more effort to get truly prepared for the real SHTF!

I think to each their own prepping, we can't tell people you can't prep for this or that because it's stupid. As long as they have the basics, down they can be planning for aliens, zombies, world total collapse, etc. Let me explain why we shouldn't do that, for example, the people in Ukraine and Israel, how many people potential and theoretically speaking could have had a higher chance of survival if they posted or commented saying hey what do I need incase of an attack from a group of terrorists or a literal country instead of saying stuff like your stupid that won't happen or stop fantasizing we should just say hey do you have a BOB do you know bushcraft, medical care basic, wound care basics and start giving them suggestions maybe that civilian at the concert remembered a vet telling him in the comments how to maneuver while being shot at and it saved his or her life or that young Ukraine teen stumbles upon a AK47 and was shown a video on how to properly use it to get his wounded father and mother out we need to stop berating these type of thoughts prepping is prepping no matter what it is and we should help each other out with knowledge no matter how ridiculous it may sound
