Going solar in any way you can is one of the best things you can do for your home. I started small several years ago with extra solar garden stake lights (screw off the top light and bring it inside if the power goes out). Products such as Biolite are the next step--and they work Much better if you're trying to read or fix something if the grid is down. Not only are solar lights more sustainable, but they are also safer to use if you have small kids, elderly family members and pets. If the grid goes down, the fire department is going to be super busy. Don't become a statistic.

My aunt would have loved this right after Helene. She about wore herself out trying to juggle what her generator would handle, and going to get gas every other hour it seemed. Me, I used my hurricane lanterns and was good to go. A radio would have been nice just for background noise, honestly, but I'm a bit jaded on the new tech after seeing so much of it fail after just sitting in a drawer for a year or more when I'm not using it.

These are great for permanent installations like a cabin or a camper. I tried using a system like this for tent camping but dealing with all the wires was just more trouble than it was worth. I went with battery operated lanterns and then just got rechargeable AAs and a charger that works off a usb so it’s easy to plug it into my solar generator or car cigarette outlet. It’s more convenient and cheaper. The battery charger and a pack of 8 batteries cost me $30 off Amazon. Lanterns were $8 a piece. So for $65 buck or so with tax I can have a light for four people or light up a whole room and not have to worry about the entire system being stolen or a cord being cut.

I was impressed when I first saw BioLite in ads and on prepper channels many years ago, but I am sure they have progressed incredibly far in the last six or seven years. Thanks for bringing it to our attention in its modern form. They are pretty incredible.

I have one and love it. Also when I bought mine, the company says one was given to a family in Africa as well. So that was pretty cool. It would be nice if had a.m. radio as well. But is still great

I think lighting is often overlooked when it comes to prepping. I reviewed this a few years back and enjoyed it. The motion sensor is a good feature along with a radio. I do prefer the deciwatt now light just due to the ability to charge without the sun (using a crank) but this is a good option as well

Great video. I’m remodeling a cabin from the 1800’s on my remote piece of heaven by myself .. it’s hard for a 22 year old with NO experience in construction or anything like that. Not easy but I’m learning a lot. I’m starting a channel too. Take care my friend, greeting from the New England Region.

My house is offgrid , plus I have a 12v battery bank , for cameras, and lighting, as a backup, when you are off grid, backups for backups is a good idea, because you never know when the sun will not be out for a week or two, I'm working on wind turbines also, that's a bit expensive, but for those who do not build it yourself, not too bad!

Do they do a larger version of this? I'm thinking something with a 12V leisure battery with 130ah capacity and a 100w solar panel or more for example. I'm thinking of a permanent install in my house, for when I can't afford to pay the electric bill anymore.
@goodredman2 жыл бұрын
If that was a 12 V lithium battery 130 amp hour with a 100 W panel likely cost would be close to $1000 for a similar unit give you a few LED lights and a radio with USB charging capability. The batteries are the most expensive part. Fortunately the prices are starting to drop, however there’s a bit of a supply shortage and getting some parts and components. I recently purchased a folding portable briefcase style 120 W on sale for $120 has hook ups for fast USB charging and can be clamped onto any deep cycle battery. If I wanted to charge lithium properly I have to get a special charge controller to go with it. This little set up shown in video is good for starting out getting familiar. It’s just very undersized to do much with it. Stay well and be prepared.
@steveclark..2 жыл бұрын
@@goodredman Undersized, can't run a normal domestic household set up on any or most of these solar systems, that's the bottom line isn't it, even the most expensive Tesla Wall system for example. We all take the grid system for granted, it's unlimited power 24/7 for the most part.

So what I did I have a larger battery bank that has a wall outlet socket. It will recharge this 20 times and it has a 100 watt solar panel so all in I am just out of 500.

I fully agree with you but most people are just dumb and some of them are related to us and they will burn down there house or die of carbon dioxide fumes bc they don't know better. I'm not saying the dumb shouldn't be thinned out but this stuff can be good for other things like a big bartering system or maybe even parts when it stops working. Maybe instead of only having skills we have some things for morale boosters bc we know as Prepper's it's not going to last but it gives us a leg up. For example What if you had a make shift clinic and needed good lighting this would actually be needed in a bad situation when seconds counted.
