Why do people have to compare. This is typical of Indians. Pinky is one of the best disciples of Kishan Maharaj whereas Shubh is the torch bearer of the Gharana and needs all support from the elder disciples of Kishan Maharaj jee. Hope all these people will keep Banaras Gharana shining

They're just part of the family. In other gatherings, they may be simulating the rhythm with just their hands to simply provide enthusiasm and support to the tabla masters.

They are mostly students of the performers. It's a tradition in Indian Classical Music that the students often accompany their teachers on stage and observe the performance. That's how they get to learn abt stage performances. Also, in earlier days, the students would make up for the guru if the guru needed any break or wanted to go to the loo. The student would perform till such time the guru resumed the performance, so that the audience don't face an abrupt stoppage in the performance.

Chris Resse - First off both the musicians are disciples of the same Guru Kishan Maharaj. Shubh Maharaj is the Grandson & Sukhwinder Singh is one of the senior most disciple of Kishan Mahraj. The person in the middle also plays tabla but he is a spectator and other than some organizational duties won't participate.

Why would you say this both are great players. Ustad Sukhwinder-ji is a ustad, Shubh is getting there, he is the torch bearer of the Gharana. At the moment Sukhwinder, Kumar Bose are the senior members and he knows how to give them respect as well.
