Shunning - How Jehovah's Witnesses Treat You If You Dare To Leave

This video is in 2 parts.
First of all I recount some of my experiences of being shunned by people I have been friends with for over 2 decades.
The ONLY reason these 'true christians' shun me is that I dared to leave the Watchtower organisation.
The second part of the video was unplanned. (It starts at 22m 40s)
I filmed the entire video while a meeting was taking place.
At the end of the meeting an announcement was made warning the congregation that I was outside and NOT to talk to me, or to be afraid!!!

13 relatives shun me even though I have never been baptised or dis-associated. I left the 'Kingstanding Congregation', Birmingham, 28 years ago yet only in the last 4 years as the shunning started, My mother Jill Fitton has been a regular pioneer for 40 years plus, she preaches love, faith and forgiveness yet she even shuns her own grandchildren that have had no affiliation with the Jehovah's Witnesses. Where is the love in that? Where is the Christianity in that? My voice will never be silenced Governing body, my voice will only get louder till I leave this earth. My story WILL be heard.

Let's be serious...tell him to go to the Catholic Church...no disrespect to their religion... where child molestation cases have actually been broadcasted on the news. @@andronthompson1493 My sister was molested by a Jehovah witness the man admitted to it they told us not to report it and he apologized and wasn't even disfellowshipped. It is an evil religion I was raised in it and at 12-year-old I could see how cruel it was and refused to be part of it. My mother was married to a man who was molesting my little sister beating her and starving me and the elders said she had to stay. My mom left was disfellowship and shunned. The rest of my cousins saw how my aunt and grandparents shun her. All of us were furious over it none of us joined except for two. One of them seriously regrets it. Don't tell me it's a nice religion it destroyed our lives!!!!!!! Check out the Royal commission The governing body and elders protect and hide molesters! Your religion is no different than any other religion including Catholics. You are not the only religion to go to door-to-door I know many Baptists and Mormons that do it. I know many Mormons and Baptists that preach in countries all over the world. You're governing body is full of false prophets who have declared the Armageddon is going to be here in 1916, 1925, and 1975. My grandfather was an elder we have a picture of him going to the convention called stay alive till 75. When I was little my grandparents would tell me how Armageddon is going to happen and if I didn't get my father to become a witness I would have to watch him die. Before you start throwing rocks at other people you should take a look at your own religion. Your comments alone show that your religion is not full of nice people but quite the opposite!!

Karl, thank you for this video and the previous one. I left 3 years ago after 20 years , 19 of which I was baptised . I left when after joining a local charity for people with mental health issues, I have suffered depression for many years and found more support and understanding within the charity than within 'the truth' I woke up when I told people that I would not be attending the christmas dinner because I was one of Jehovah's witnesses , noone challenged me or shunned me for this, but continued to treat me with respect and kindness. The contrast with that and the way we were taught that we should avoid friendships with people who are not 'one of us' made me question who was really being loving . That and other situations within the organisation that I experienced. Knowing that leaving meant my close friends would be put in the position of choosing between myself and their faith , I refrained from any contact with them . I haven't even seen local witnesses around town since I left , so have not been faced with being shunned. I have had a couple of visits from Elders and the circuit overseer trying to persuade me to come back. I have not officially disassociated myself as I refuse to be bound by their rules. I actually refused to write a letter disassociating myself as that would be in some way conforming to the organisations rules . I now have my family back and am happier than I have ever been .

Jesus is good. He loves you and will heal you. Jesus died and shed His blood so that we can be made whole and walk in His perfect plan for our life. You deserve to be loved and there is nothing wrong with walking away from anyone that mistreats you.

I know shunning well. I've been shunned by family and friends for over 30 years. Currently I do "mostly" have communication with my family but they do that at the risk of being dishfellowshipped themselves and usually have me hide if they have witness friends visiting or might run into us when we're outside (thankfully for them I don't live nearby so it's only when I go for a visit) unbelievable but yes, it happens. But I also remember as a young girl being told to shun some people who had been our dear friends but who were dishfellowshipped for "apostasy" which is just another word for questioning the BS they're being taught. I remembered we were almost afraid of them but at the time I didn't really understand why, just that I couldn't even look at them in public. I always wished that I could find them and tell them how sorry I was. It's one of the most wicked practices of this horrible cult. I wish I could share some of these videos with my family who are still practicing but I know that wouldn't go well for me either - and yet I just wish they could see what they're doing with their eyes wide open. I always say, "say it out loud and listen to how insane it sounds." *sigh* But thank you for what you post. I mostly don't care anymore because it's been so long ago and I've moved on - but 4 years ago at my own father's funeral I got the full extent of shunning once again. Some of them are just blind, some are truly horrible - but it was a reminder of how much I hate their cult.

Fantastic video Karl! Seeing this happening is so much more riveting than just talking about it. The announcement made at the end of the meeting is priceless. It's almost like watching an old sci fi movie where the alien commander tells the alien drones to not communicate with the humans and to not fear them. Nobody can make this up. Unbelievable! Watching the drama unfold. It was wonderful to watch you have some fun and by laughing at this crazy situation of shunning. It is a good lesson for all of us to watch this video and keep things in perspective. As we can see Karl is not under their control any more! I had to show this video to my husband who has never been a Jehovahs Witness, but has had to deal with them because he married me and I was raised in a Witness environment. My mom is just now seeing how people who are Witnesses act and she is waking up slowly! This was so brilliant to do back to them! I was never baptized and when I was in and out of this so called religion I was treated horribly! To this day they still treat me horribly, but now I don't care. How ironic that on the phone the speaker says they know right from wrong,kind of like when Satan said from the day you eat from the tree, you will know right from wrong.What this really means is obey the governing body no matter what. They have an insane fear of people who left,and it's really because they are afraid of the truth that those who woke up know.What a sad dysfunctional hopeless cocoon of intolerance they allow themselves to be wrapped up in. Karl, I chuckled along with you on your video but also felt sadness. My mom and sister's family are JW's. I have seen them shun a former member. That former member looked to be in agony. My mom and sister would lose every friend they know if they left the watchtower; I feel that fear keeps them following. It is emotional bullying and very cruel.

I came back early from my father's funeral after a group of Jehovah's witnesses crowded in a sofa would not go over to me to say hello or sit in the same long sofa where I was sitting. After the 3rd person passed by and said hello to everyone except me I got up, left and didn't go back. My own father whose funeral I came from shunned me for decades. I honestly wish I knew HOW they can ignore Jesus Christ's request to love one another as yourselves or to not judge others. A few men in New York is who they worship as their Gods. A person's relationship with God or Jesus Christ should N E V E R be intervened by ANY man! Shunning is the LEAST Christian thing anyone can do and I'm sure the fear of the Armageddon is held over their heads to ensure their shunning and control are done as planned. I would say that definitely sounds as evil as you can get!

Not just talking about it, but actually catching it on video. They're taking their time leaving hoping you leave first. You've shamed them by holding them accountable for their behavior. Hi Karl, thank you for your informative video, however this behaviour from the witnesses doesn't surprise me. As a practicing muslim we are taught to be respectful and anyone who questions us about our belief we have to respond if we have knowledge about the matter. I'm in regular contact with the witnesses in my area and invite them to my house for dialogue. The funny thing is after one sitting they don't come back.

Think we should have a convention with shunning experiences !! I dissassociated myself 6 months ago after 40 years ! I had a good friend while active , both on our own . We laughed together and cried together for many years . She had cancer and horrendous treatment , I had a cruel marriage and eventually thrown out of my lovely home by my unfaithful witness husband ...to name just a couple ..... But we found a lot of strength in our friendship !!! I now work in a shop and she came in the other day with her daughter ( none JW ) and her beautiful 4 year old granddaughter . They both ran up to hug me and talk while my old conditional friend walked round with her head down ! The both shouted goodbye when leaving while my " friend of 30+ years slunk out !!!!! Poor thing !!! Captive !!!!!! She probably thinks I'm doing drugs cos I look happy , or drink , or I'm insatiated with many WORDLY lovers ....... But I'm just sooo happy to be free ! ..... Hi Karl, just looking at your youtube video and was inspired what you said.I too used to study this when i was in a vunerable situation about twenty-six years ago but could not bring myself to doing it i always felt something was not quite right,I think you are amazing for standing up to this. You are right ,the JWs do shun worldly people and there are a lot of fantastic people out there. I know a so called witness in Telford,Shropshire. is so dodgy but still goes to meetings (what a joke). I have seen him numerous times outside my local shop buying a lottery ticket for his step daughter, don't think jesus christ would of done that, do you. Wow to see these adults running back inside the Kh as if they feared you were contagious very enlightening , up until 3 weeks ago I was studying with some jws however after much research I believe they are not going to accept me as I am which to me is the mark of a true Christian showing unconditional love and acceptance towards one another wether it's a neighbour or stranger u find it shocking to see how so called religious people can turn on their fellow Christian with no real justification just because you now longer attend Kh and are not a witness any longer does not make you bad or wrong friend turn against friend brother and sisters turning away it's so sad really I truly admire your courage and sensibility you are not causing trouble but are free to stand wherever and whenever you please you seem such a kind hearted and generous man keep up the good work !

I think you are a brave and nice person. I’m being put through hell for the last two years by my hmmmm family. I have been led to believe I am mad, been terrorised 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for two years solid. Followed everywhere, goaded for months on end to commit suicide! I will not give in to these people!!! They are still doing it and saying they will suicide me! I have had a street full of them turn there backs on me!! They are a sick evil cult! Those people in the Kingdom Hall WILL NOT STOP shunning you because they've been brainwashed to believe Jehovah will destroy them if they talk to you. Making Jw's squirm when their reality butts up with the rest of the universe's reality is, I believe, effective. I'm not D'fed or disassociated. I went through a divorce from a sister a few years ago after i had a brief affair & now i'm fully shunned by all the witnesses i know in the town i live in. I find it bizarre as I was publicly reproved but they take that as grounds to shun. Unsurprisingly i not been back to the hall for some time as this attitude makes my skin creep and also needed to protect my mental health from this mindset & liked your point at 13:50

Funny how they know who you are. My wife is a witness. I have been very outspoken to my wife regarding my concerns about the sex abuse. A brother confronted me at a gas station in my home town while he was conducting field service. I asked him about the sex abuse and expressed my concerns. He replied "Wait a second, you are Sister so and so's husband aren't you and he walked away when I confirmed it. Funny how tight knit the JW community os and amazing how my wife would use me as an example to the congregation.

Hi. It's early days but it gets easier with time. I was a Witness for over thirty years. Ive been out now for over twenty years. I was shunned by members of my old congregation, people I had know for years and years, since I was a child. I'm still being shunned by family. It doesn't bother me anymore. I actually feel sorry for them because they've totally lost the ability to think for themselves. Keep smiling. You're doing well.

I'm long time inactive and not going to meetings, so I'm not being shunned, but eventually I will disassociate myself, but I'm married with kids, so now is not the time. I'm not religious or have anymore interest in god or religion, but I do think this religion is wicked. I wish my wife would see that. Hey Karl, we became witnesses around the same time (baptized in November of 92) and we're the same age, just a cool coincidence. Thank you for sharing this video, I have the JW's calling on me and I told them more than once I had my own faith but they still returned and I felt I got roped in to having studies with them from their ''Good news'' book , I sent them an email telling them I don't want any more studies, I had a reply saying they understand, but may see them around in the future .

I been shunned and went to meetings anyway and discovered that I had been marked. They all were gossiping about me questioning the discreet slave. I told them I wouldn't get Baptised until I understood it and shown the proof from the bible. Well, no one would even speak to me at the meetings.

I shunned those disfellowshiped as a young man and baptized member. I never felt that it was right and served the purpose that they preach. They proved to me with scripture that it was how i must now relate to them, and it served as a way to protect the flock, ect. Treating others, who were often still very good people, in that manner is one of my biggest regrets in life. It does not reconcile them back to the flock i think in most cases. They claim that there is love behind treating them that way. For the last thirty years i have been on the receiving end of being shunned. It has served to bolster my self esteem and made me stronger. I truly feel in my heart that thier sin is greater than the one that i commited . I celebrate my release from the burden of being a witness every day and do not worry about my fate.

I've been shunned by 2 people since I left, and I wasn't even disfellowshipped or did I do anything to them personally!! Ironic isn't it? The JWs have fought for their right to practice their religion, for religious freedom, but they do not allow their own members the same right, which is actually against many countries' laws in the western world. It is an extremely harsh punishment for people who have not in many cases committed any crimes. When Jackson testified at the Australian CSA Commision, he said that 'shunning' was left entirely up to a publisher's own conscience. How can they lie like that in a court? He knows full well that this is NOT the case! And 'theocratic warfare' is no explanation for this; he was basically LYING about his religion's own doctrine. The report about the jws that was released condemns them completely: they are a disgrace. They are supposed to be BETTER or the BEST of all other religions: really?! It makes me feel sick that I was ever a part of them. I don't regret the time that I spent with those who were genuinely good, some who still call regularly on me. I feel so sorry for them and I try to drop the odd thing into our conversations to try to make them think, but they don't think for themselves, that's the trouble. I'm glad that you've been able to come to terms like you have. It's not been the same for me as I still kept my faith, not in what the jws teach, but I kept studying. It's a good job that I did because some are vulnerable to being enticed back, and I had to know for sure that I was doing the right thing. In doing so. I've strengthened my faith greatly, but after 15 years I'm still finding out lies that they taught; some of those things were very important to me in relation to my faith. Recently I became very depressed when I found out a certain lie that they teach because it is vital to a person's faith. I cried for days afterwards and was depressed for many weeks. Keep up the good work anyways. Like you say, it may galvanise some of them in their faith, but I was glad that you got a smile out of 2 people there; perhaps they are waking up too!! Many are and involved with leaking info as you're already aware.

As an ex-college lecturer and a life long Atheist I have seen this unpleasantness in many other cults. I had in one particular cohort a most brilliant student who, was not only academic but also very social. However this student had to leave academic studies because the parents did not like the ethos of the college which was and still is very liberal. My sympathies go out to all victims of this religious persecution.

Then they shun you because they heard it from a reliable source or an elder. So much for their precious confidentiality that they love to trot out when it reveals horrid things happening within ‘the truth’.

You know you made the right decision leaving this organization after seeing how they treat you. There are those who are needing of belonging to a religion and those who are completely happy without it and do not require all that dogma cluttering their thinking process. All these tax-free buildings that we all have to pick up the slack for , so in a way we all support their delusion whether we are a member of their club or not.

+Karl My parents were in there untill they died. They were not grandparents to my kids. They missed out on SO much. I just don't understand how they couldn't see how we are all still good people; just not their religion. I saw them 5 times in the 25 years since I left untill they died. It's so easy to love people for WHO they are, and leave the WHAT they are out of it. But the organization steals that from families of good people. That's why I pray for all the lost ones still in there. It poisons families. Apostle Paul wrote that thete would be people with different beliefs and the strong in faith should have nothing to fear from their activities or foods. That's why JW's don't go into other churches or such. They have not much faith. Romans 14.

I was brought up as one, I never got baptised and i stopped attending meetings when i was about 19. But have you people noticed how much depression there is among JWs? i think its because of the coldness and constant way you are judged. Even if you do not go for field service, if you do not turn in a report card, if you are not in the Theo sch.... to much bondage. I really thank God that i saw the light.

It is unrealistic to think that people in a mind-control organization like the Watch Tower should behave in a mature or healthy manner after a member like yourself chooses to leave. Shunning is standard practice toward apostates by JWs throughout the world. It takes courage to face this kind of abuse once you have departed. There is hope for you to build a new life. Ave Maria.

Karl, I get your frustration with the shunning mindset,I've seen it powerfully in action while I've been D'fed & when I've not attended the hall some some time. Currently just treading water so to speak and not D'fed The main reasoning is loyalty to Jehovah via scriptural indications. I think within the organisation & within life generally there are judgmental people who will treat other individuals in such a manner but from the experiences I've had i've been shunned by JW's but also by so called apostates who when faced with logical calmly discussed points refuse to air or give time to listening to pints I make. Mate, I live down south but am up in the north east regularly so wouldn't mind a meet up a for a drink and a chat,know Whitley Bay well so if you wanna meet there it ain't far from Blyth. I am genuinely sorry to hear about the separation from your wife and have recently gone through a divorce so the pain of separation for me is all too acute.

Good luck, thanks for the lesson. I've been in a study for some time, I've always believed that the Witnesses were (are) wonderful people and I really do love the ones that I know well. I have, however, recently been feeling pressured by my study partner to move closer to baptism but all that pressure has done is push me away. I've started to do some research and I don't like what I'm finding out. I suspect my bible buds will want to be around me less once they learn that I will never be baptized (don't want to become unevenly yoked - ya know). Shunning has always been void of all communication. I'm disfellowshipped and I don't say hello to any brother or sister because I know the rules. I've thought about everything in this video and I understand. Jesus didn't treat anyone like that but I know it's to do with 1 Corinthians 5:9-13 (throw the wicked one out from amongst yourselves, not even eating with such ones). The shunning doesn't bother me, I actually like ignoring them as they do me, I don't give them that power, maybe it's more in my head or how I am as a person, one thing that did get to me, I went to a meeting recently and one brother I've known for years decided to sit next to me, it was a full house and there were two seats free next to me, an elder who is on my committee walks up to him (back row) and tells him not to sit there, so before he sits down he has to leave and sit somewhere else... my question is, is this an overreach of his authority? Ignore me, fine... give me a dirty look... fine, but treating me like I'm diseased and cannot sit with me?!? Has anyone else experienced this?

I was deliberately shunned and excluded from the first day I joined.at first I gave everyone time to accept me as a stranger. But after a few months I thought something wasn't right,but I continued to tolerate their snobbish behavior.and then one day I woke up and realized 5 years had passed.and they had treated me like a leper. Their is a scripture that you will never hear them use,because it refers to themselves.that scripture is James chapter 2.

Hey Karl, Greg from Australia checking out video. Haven't read all the comments and your current standing. Just hope you haven't 'shunned' Jesus and have been able to find a body of Bible believing Christians who are sincere about their faith. I wouldn't need to tell you that there is much to be ashamed of in Christendom and many of the JW criticism's of the Christian church would be valid. However as a Christian for many many years I just have a wonderful fellowship with so many who attend various churches and are a part of the body of Christ. We may express our worship differently, we might differ in our practice of communion etc but we truly love Jesus and one another. I never 'shun' JW's when they come to my door and I don't believe Christians should be rude and turn them away. Always at least try and show the love of Christ and be courteous even if it's a 'no thanks don't have time to talk ... but have a nice day'. So much else I'd like to say ... but I'll leave it there and pray and hope you can now enjoy the wonderful 'freedom' we have in knowing a loving God who sent his only Son to die for our sins.

I attended a festival , had a great time in which some ex JWs attended and another recently disfellowshipped individual was also joining in and I knew they were not rapists murderers or peodophiles, they were simply individuals who had changed their minds about the religion and the other one was divorced because he and his wife got married way too early in their JW lives and now couldn't stand being married to one another but are great friends. Why are these things deemed to be crimes? In fact the rapists and peodophiles have maintained membership in some circumstances depending on their rank, take the Elder named Bill O'Neil in Australia, his wife was well aware of her husbands criminal behaviour and so were his fellow elders in the Narrogin Congregation all of whom appeared at the Royal Commission, they indeed did protect this individual from punishment by Law and Brothers Letts GB Member, you are a liar and you do protect your peodophiles just like the Catholic Church.
