Ima explain the plot that shunsui's bankai tells: So some context, his shikai is based on children's games and his bankai is based on theatre plays for adults. We know this because the play shunsui is telling is a suicide story of a couple, a man and a woman. Lillie Barro is the man, Shunsui is the woman. In Act 1: because the man hit the woman, he feels great shame as if the wounds he inflicted he can also feel them (and it becomes real damage). Act 2: the man starts feeling even worse for what he did and develops a sickness because of this great shame. Act 3: as a way to atone the man drops into a endless ocean hoping to drown and the woman also drowns with him because she pities him. However, the man becomes a coward, starting to swim up to the surface abandoning his promise to drown along with the woman. Act 4: As a result of all this, the woman wanting to get rid of the man's regret and cowardness, cuts his throat and then she drowns, as if the promise they made was never broken.

As a Shinigami born and raised in Japan, I will explain the references of Shunsui's ability. Kage Oni is a game of tag in which you win if you step on your opponent's shadow. Bhodidarma Fall Down(Daruma san ga koronda) is exactly as described and is identical to the one in Squid Game; in fact, the Japanese sub/dub of 1st round of Squid Game was translated as “Daruma san ga koronda". Kage Okuri is a game played on a clear day when you gaze longingly at your shadow, then look up at the sky and enjoy seeing the afterimage of the shadow. And Bankai “Katenkyokotsu Karamatsu Shinju” is probably based on a Kabuki performance called “Sonezaki Shinju” (I heard it is called The Love Suicides at Sonezaki in English.) Kabuki has been an adult pastime since the Edo period, which contrasts with Shikai which is the realization of children's games.

[Tidbits][Lotta Reading] - The Game Shunsui is playing at the start called “Daruma-san ga Koronda” is basically red-light green-light - Lille Barro’s ability of “Intangibility” was hinted at when he fought Oetsu, If you recall Oetsu at one point attempted to slash him yet the blade went through. [As an aside, the battle between the 0 Squad and the Schutzstaffel gave at least 1 hint at each member's ability, so for those interested you can go back and watch that battle and see how they did it] - Many fans have mixed feelings on Lille’s Volstanding look, however, I think it’s very fitting when you understand what Kubo is going for. Quincy obviously have biblical influence, Lille upon his transformation gains 4 pairs of wings, meaning in regards to the bible he’d be a Seraphim (Angels with 8 Wings) [Seraphim angels are primarily responsible for constantly praising and worshipping God, specifically by repeatedly proclaiming "Holy, Holy, Holy" while circling around the throne of God, signifying their intense devotion to God's holiness; their main function is to glorify God through their unceasing worship and remind others of God's sacred nature.] - We finally see why Shunsui couldn’t use his Bankai when he fought Starrk. Those within the area would have been pulled into it and it would have killed several of his allies. I feel it’s a very fitting Bankai in that it somewhat mimics the dangerous aspects of Yama’s who also couldn’t use his Bankai however he pleased. (Some lines are removed that better express what Shunsui Bankai feels like, it seemingly instills negative emotions conjuring a sense of darkness, dread, and despair. It’s chilling and makes even the most stubborn characters uncomfortable) - Shunsui’s Bankai is a Play (A Kabuki Play to be specific) with the opponent being a performer and it’s composed of 3 Acts. A play can’t go on without its performer, therein if the enemy dies during an act, the Bankai will of course end immediately (fans likely questioned this because the title of the chapter covering his Bankai was labeled “The Theatre Suicide”) There is a lot of context revolving around the Play that Shunsui’s Bankai evokes but it would make this comment too long so I opted to cut it. - Anime fans who watched the Zanpaktou Rebellion Filler actually got the opportunity to see Shunsui’s Zanpaktou Spirit a long time ago, but it’s good to see it in canon. - Shunsui's personality often switches swiftly between playful to serious. I believe his Shikai and Bankai represent this well. His Shikai forces people to “Play” children's games, while his Bankai forces you to take part in a Kabuki “Play”. (I feel Shunsui as a character somewhat embodies this, human life is a play, a play in which we are often forced to act, forced to face conflicts no matter what we wish. We’d love to have life be more relaxed and unserious like games, but we know that when the games are done we have to return to reality.) - Sidenote: Nanao being able to keep up with Shunsui’s Shunpo without getting tired is a nod to the Soul Society arc when the opposite occurred. - Sidenote 2: Just a reminder cause I’ve seen some confused comments in other reactions, but Shunsui can in fact (albeit not intentionally) enact several games at once during Shikai - Sidenote 3: Reikaku are the senses used to detect Reiatsu - Sidenote 4: Kabuki plays are about historical events and moral conflict in relationships of the heart.

His bankai is a play about a man and his wife. The theater suicide. They have to play according to their roles in the play, so that's where the rules come from. Japanese tradition usually has that "yooooohh" before the play begins. It has 4 acts like an actual play or similar to how yamamoto has North south east and west

It's bit more nuanced than that. The 4 acts aren't similar to ZnT's 4 forms. Rather, it's "karamatsu shinju" which is similar to those 4 forms. Kyoraku's bankai name is the same as his shikai "katen kyokotsu". And he can use different act than just "karamatsu shinju". Similar to how yama's bankai is ZnT but he can use west/North/East/south.

Shunsui didn't use his Bankai in his fight against Starrk because Ukitake was there to tell him to not use it & helped him battle Starrk, Starrk battled 4 captains in total including Shunsui, if Shunsui had been fighting Starrk alone throughout the entirety of that fight, he would have resorted to use his Bankai like he said he would

I'm wondering, would Starrk have made the same mistake Lille did by immediately attacking? In terms of intelligence Starrk has Shunsui beat figuring out his tricks on his own and what Shunsui hides from him meanwhile Lille was working with data from everything he had gathered from the Starrk fight. Personally part of me believes that Shunsui appearing in front of him not attacking would make him feel cautious so he wouldn't immediately attack which would then make the 1st act unusable then the second act doesn't work either. Third act comes down to both of them having their spiritual pressure drained but Starrk is a monster when it comes to that so he'd outlast Shunsui there the question is the last act would that still work on Starrk or not?

Shunsui's afterimage is different cause it's projected and hardened by his reiatsu . If you remember in SS arc , Kenpachi's reiatsu can be projected like skull and skeletons, Ichigo's like his hollow mask while Yachiru's looks like a fierce cat , but those are not materialised , just people only can feel the pressure.

-Ziliel means something like "judgement of god". Lille was, actually, a super prototype for the concept of Schrifts. It's kinda interesting that his Vollstandig form does resemble Arceus from Pokemon, which has a move called "Judgement". -Kyouraku's Bankai references the "suicide theater", in which two lovers make a suicide pact. It's not as known in the West as is in the East, which is foreshadowed when Kyouraku talks about different cultures. But you see it here and there in Japanese media - Ace Attorney has an example where two lovers made a pact of swallowing poison if they ever suspected one another. -Kyouraku's Zanpakutou appeared on the (mostly filler) Zanpakutou Rebellion arc, so basically they canonized the design. Even then, her VA is different from that time, now voiced by Ami Koshimizu (also known as Yukiko from Persona 4, Mai Shiranui from KoF and Konohana Sakuya from SMTV Vengeance). -Remember when, during the fight with Starrk, that Ukitake didn't let Kyouraku use his Bankai, calling it "ill-suited for such a place"? That's why. It involves everyone at the vicinity, without distinction, like Shinji's Bankai. Also Kubo clarified in a Q&A that, if anyone died in one of the "acts" prior to the final one, the Bankai would automatically end because there wouldn't have enough "actors" to continue the "play".

Nah, you shouldn’t extrapolate Shunsui’s sword spirit being the same as shown in that arc as every design also being canon. That’s not how it works. Most swords spirits are not humanoid. We know for a fact that Zabimaru is a Baboon with a snake for a tail and not a monkey woman with a child on a leash as we saw Renji manifest it during Bankai training during the Soul Society arc. We know for a fact Hyorinmaru is a colossal Ice Dragon and not a human as well.
