Shunt Modding the Wired eBike

For those curious, the shunt mod takes two resistive connections that are meant to reduce strain on the controller components, and bridges them together to increase amperage. It's a common mod and usually safe, and the KT controllers are fine with it most of the time because their output transistors use the controller housing as a heatsink. The power increase is about 200 to 300 watts, but does not show on the display because the controller calibration does not account for the change 😉 The battery discharge current is controlled by the BMS (battery management system), and will limit how much power the controller can get. The exception of this is the BMS is mismatched, defective, or uses direct output which is unmanaged. If the battery or controller show signs of overheating, you can "undo" this mod using the soldering iron and solder wick, then bending the wires back apart if they are touching. Have fun!

"The power increase is about 200 to 300 watts..." Is that relative to this bike, its battery voltage and controller amps or just in general? If I did this to my Emove Roadrunner, which is 48v with a front controller of 15 amps and rear controller of 20 amps would I still see 200-300 watts per controller? That would make a huge difference vs the Wired Freedom.

​@@Werk4Cashyou can still do it , I wrapped copper wire around mine and then soldered it , sounds like you have a 22 amp controller,I recently upgraded my controller to a 30 amp ,but haven't done the shunt mod , I feel it doesn't need it , it has plenty of power as it is .

I tried just putting some solder by itself on the single bar and it appeared a lot faster but forgot to unplug the battery before putting the controller back in its housing and it caused massive sparks and shorted out. Tried unplugging the battery and reconnecting it and the damn battery wires sparked so much they basically fused together and crumpled apart totally messed up my kugoo m4 pro :(

Awesome video. I just added some Max Epc potting compound to my controller and I feel zero heat. The bike is even quicker than it already was! I have done about 1k miles since doing the shunt mod with zero issues. Unfortunately, a lot of these commenters have no idea what they're talking about and are giving bad advice to your viewers.

A shunt mod on an e-bike involves adjusting the current measurement resistor (shunt resistor) in the controller to alter the amount of current that the controller reads and limits. If done properly, the mod won't destroy the controller for a few reasons: The controller is designed with a built-in current limit to protect its components. By modifying the shunt resistor, you're changing the current sense feedback, but as long as you stay within the controller's maximum rated limits, it will continue to function safely. If the shunt mod is done carefully, the increased current draw will be within the limits that the controller can handle. This ensures that components do not exceed their thermal or electrical limits, avoiding damage. E-bike controllers often have built-in mechanisms to handle excess heat and prevent overheating. As long as the increased current doesn’t cause excessive heat or stress beyond what the cooling system can handle, the controller should remain safe. Controllers are generally designed to handle a range of operating conditions. As long as the modifications don’t push the controller beyond its design specifications, it should work correctly without damage. It’s crucial to understand the risks and ensure the mod is done by someone knowledgeable. Excessive modifications or improper adjustments can lead to overheating or failure, so it's essential to proceed with caution and always remember.... That may make the battery terminal overheat if you feed it more power. My battery started melting the inside terminal and I didn't even do a shunt mod.

My own experience on my shubt modded 2024 Wired Bike: seemed to pickup a few watts in lower pedal assist. For instance Pedal assist 1 used to be about 230 watts now its 250. I had a hard time riding under 18 mph in pedal assist 1 now. Bike just seemed to have a bit more juice on the same setting. Off the line power a little more snappy, the top end I hit 41.6 peddling with full throttle on flat with no wind so maybe 1 mph gain or so on the top end. Based on this a worthy mod and its probably not going to affect any reliabilty

I have a 48v 1500w peak bike. The stock battery is 48v 11.6ah and i installed a dual battery balancer with a 20ah 2nd battery. Will the dual battery system help any gains with the solder mod ? Also will it help with not overheating a battery since the balancer is supposed to balance power?

the solder mod will pull more power from the battery so having 2 batteries should help, it will probably have less voltage sag. My guess would be that having more capacity to pull from would also help keep them cooler

All because of your reviews I've bought my ebikes , first one was a Hiiwiway cruiser (I loved) I owned it until I realized that it accelerated way too slow to run with traffic . Here in Indiana cars will just run you over or off the road while they curse at you(f____ing idiots). I was really excited with your review of the wired freedom and it's top speed so I bought the late 2023 model and really wish I would have waited a few months for the 2024 model because I can't take advantage of the mid suspension , it will rub against my controller box so I have to extend it all the way out to avoid this . I have plans on buying the new model that way I will have spare parts and battery if needed . You are truly "De Man" 🏆on all things ebike related , keep up the fantastic work !

Shut mod only changes so much, to really push esc, E-Bikes you would have to change gearing, use higher output batteries but just shunt modding the controller and regular riding should be fine, motor can handle it, esc usually a good brand can handle a little more.

It would be more insightful had you clocked before the mod, then clock it again after to get an accurate comparison. Also, all the YT videos of the WIRED Freedom speed runs never show or mention whether they are pedaling to assist (increase speed) when reaching these 40+ mph figures. Could you explain how the mod change in the Ctlr circuit is furnishing more power? How did you discover which wires to alter? Also, it would be a good idea to measure (and monitor) any increase in the temperature inside the Ctlr since more power is likely inducing more load on circuit. I would be reluctant to try this mod without first consulting a seasoned electrical engineer who is familiar with this particular circuit. I have had many encounters with Chinese manufacturers over the years, and I am very leary of Chinese electrical/electronic circuitry. They are notorious for using under-rated gauge wires in their electronic devices that tend to over-heat. The majority of the Chinese wire sold on Amazon don't have the gauge, voltage, amp ratings printed on the insulation, that are required in the U.S. I could on and on with specific examples. but nobody really cares about such things anymore.

I do know that CA Cycle Analyst have done some testing with e-bikes power, my first build 9 years ago was with CA and a 1000 watt drive had a lot of fun and 16,000 miles. sold it last year. Have a new bike now lower watts but just as fun. 75 years old and enjoying life.

Yes, can easily be done on the 5 Star however it voids the warranty. It increases the power the controller provides to the motors and also causes a lot of heat because the controller is not designed to handle that much power

Needs a soldering lesson. The idea is to heat the wires, that are going to have solder pushed into the heated wires, so it flows into the wires. This is so cringe.😂 His is literally dripping melted solder onto room temp. wires, then a big blob, lands on the PCB

You have to monitor how hot the mosfets get with the mod, you dont want them getting too hot for too long, if you heavily mod the shunt you might need different mosfets and upgrade the busbars or solder tracks from fets. Surprised you didn't check the heat of the controller at all, you just have to put your hand on it.

You really should add the caveat (or, maybe you did but I missed it) that modifying a bike this way might void your warranty. Also, a lot of states/provinces have speed limits on ebikes in public areas. So, anybody looking to do this modification, be aware.
