Love these practical 成语 videos. So often you are taught really philosophical ones that are fun, but not useful for daily life.

Organized so well in terms of how learners think. I find the hand gestures useful too when you described "talking" at the beginning and towards the end of your video when describing other videos.

I am very confused about it. I asked my Chinese friend and she told me just one meaning. She said it’s very complicated but I’ll understand later🥺and I keep seeing and hearing it several times...please help me.

a very interesting way to introduce 成语 would be, I guess, to start from the English expression, and then to demonstrate how Chinese express the same idea. When you know enough to understand a bit of chinese, you struggle even more to translate from your occidental way of speaking to Chinese (at least it is what I experience now) maybe it would be easier like this, before going to next step, which is thinking directly in Chinese. 您觉得对不对?
1)third one is acceptable (的 x 地 o) the first one is grammar error. the second one look like not finish yet. 【In order to go to the beach, I can't wait (for something or to do something)】 2)first and second is acceptable, third one we don't use "把"

I like how you explain how the 4 characters lead to the meaning. How can I ask natives to give me these kinds of explanations? When I ask if someone can explain the characters of an idiom, I usually get the answer that “there’s nothing to explain, it’s an idiom, that’s what it means”. I feel like something is lost in translation. I usually ask “能不能一个字一个字的解释吗”

The "bottom line" is that even if you try to explain an idiom, you're "not out of the woods" because the two of you are probably "not on the same wavelength". So it's like "casting pearls before swine". :-) :-)
@dawsonlo72133 жыл бұрын
Typically, idioms can be explained by looking into each character's meaning, though it is very hard to explain it well because knowledge of 文言文 (old Chinese) is required. But Chinese idioms actually have several forms of compositions that not all can be explained in the way you suggest. For instance, "东施效颦". Many idioms actually originated from stories.
@harshmnr2 жыл бұрын
Maybe they respond that way because when you ask them to explain it character by character, there kind of really is nothing to explain since each character just means one word/concept. It's like if someone asked you "Can you explain word by word what 'finding a needle in a haystack' means?" In that case you might respond, "Well, a needle is just a needle and a haystack is a...stack of hay...?" But maybe if you asked them to explain the concept as a whole, they would be more likely to explain the symbolism for some of them. But I feel like some idioms aren't really that symbolic and maybe that's also why they would be confused. Like the first example in this video. It goes about saying it in a slightly different way but it pretty much literally means "I can't wait (for that urgent/exciting thing)". So in the same way if someone asked you in English "What does 'I can't wait' mean?" you might be a bit confused and be like "It just means...I can't wait..? Or I'm excited?" and that's about it. (I'm just theorizing, but of course I don't know which specific idioms you've asked people about.) The same kind of thing happened to me in Japan. The station by my friend's house was called 西船橋 (I'm sure you guys know what it means, same meaning as Chinese, but just for kicks and giggles-"West Boat Bridge"-pronounced "nishifunabashi" in Japanese). Out of curiously and naivete I asked my friend 'What does West Boat Bridge mean?" and she was really confused. West Boat Bridge just means West Boat Bridge. 😂 ~:~

@@harshmnr Yeah, that definitively gives me perspective as to what it’s like from their point of view. I think asking for the “concept” (概念 gai4 nian4) of the idiom is a good idea

Sentence 2: 我被选中参加比赛,很受宠若惊. A bit weird. We normally do not say "I am flattered." Perhaps I should have said: Did they make a mistake? "他们弄错了吗?"
Chengyu are such a common feature of colloquial Chinese I think it is only fitting that you dodon't a regular weekly video on the subject. Start off with 100 most common idioms and present 5 ~10 idioms per video possibly. Just an idea
