I've decided to try and speak with people from various parts of China so I can train my hears to adjust to the different accents there. Even in the United States, in the South alone where I'm from, there are many different kinds of accents. So we can't expect everyone to have the exact same accent or use the same dialect. Also thank you for your tips!! I hope I'll be able to say all of this again someday in Chinese. 😭

Thanks for sharing, great learning material and many interesting points. I mainly stick to drama source (variety and easy access) and must admit that adjusting to fast spoken speech is doable, but trying to listen to poorly articulated sentences is an exercise similar to climbing Everest 😅 IMHO best actors are ones who work in dubbing industry (gaming, audio dramas etc)

Hello! I liked your explanations. I want to and will learn Mandarin. I have been studying as a self-taught person, watching many videos with different approaches to teaching Mandarin. At the moment my difficulty is in "putting together" an understanding of the pronunciation of words, associating them with the characters, without looking at the pinyin. In short: I want to learn Mandarin to communicate with native speakers and to be able to read characters. My native language is Portuguese. I would like your advice/suggestions. Thank you.

Well, I ve seen many students have the same problem with yours. Actually this also happen to me when I speak English. I regard this problem as one reason: I am not used to the language. So if I can listen and speak more, I will get used to this language, then I will understand more. So keep going, you will find you understand more and more soon.

At 9:50, when you say "我也听不懂", it sounds to my ears like you pronounce 也 with the 4th tone, but I thought it should be the 3rd tone. Am I hearing it wrong? It's not the first time that I notice 也 pronounced like that.
@chinesemandarincherry2 жыл бұрын
haha, you are right! In Chinese we always change 3rd tone in conversation, when 3rd tone combine with another 3rd tone, sometimes for convenient, we will change 3+3 to 2+3. In this sentence 我也听不懂,the original pinyin should be: wǒ yě tīng bù dǒng, I changed “wǒ yě” to “wó yě”, sometimes which makes students feel confused, but you were right, I do change the 也 tone, but I changed to yé when I speak fast. The rules of 3rd tone change should be: 1. 3+3👉2+3: 早点 zǎodiǎn 👉záo diǎn 2. 3+1 or 3+2 or 3+4 👉 half 3rd + 3rd:好听 hǎo tīng 👉hǎo(down, no rise)tīng; 打折dǎzhé👉dá(half 3rd)zhé 3. 3+3+3: depends on the word meaning,we will change to 2+2+3 or 3+2+2…… But I must say, the rules are not for you to remember and follow them. they are for you to understand Chinese in a short way, There is no strict rule that you must follow about the 3rd tone change. if you don't change when you are speaking, we still totally understand you. when you start to speak Chinese fast, you ll find yourself naturally following these rules too! haha that‘s interesting, right?
