They did mr. buck, the windscreens intended for the SM7B both fit tighter, as well as doing a better job rejecting plosives by putting more distance between the screen and the capsule! Try it out and let us know your results!

Thanx for this review! A call would have made the phone sending. While during watching a video the phone is more on the reciever side. And another thing - sorry for that: The amount of „background noise“ or room sound that the capsule of a mic pics up depends on the polar pattern and the frequency response, NOT on the type of soundconversion. If a cardioid should reject the sound in a 90 degree angle by 10db, it will do exactly that, no matter if its a dynamic or a condenser mic. 😃👍. I love your reviews! Not only the well researched info but also the calm and relaxed way of presentation 🍀.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Klaus. The practical difference in how much room sound a microphone picks up has to do not with the polar pattern so much as the fact that one *usually works closer to a dynamic microphone. This increases the signal to noise ratio. And the reason one generally works closer to a dynamic mic is the lower overall sensitivity.

I just got this microphone and while it's not exactly the SMB7 and I don't expect it to last the same as one, for the price it can't be beaten. I've tested many USB microphones and this one is the best sounding by far. As you mention, the limiter is practically useless and the plosives are a thing to look at, but other than that it's a great piece of gear for the money!

As a hapless victim of the Blue Yeti, I am blown away by the quality of the MV7. Your review also covered all bases and I was very impressed by your professionality while you did not go into needless details (like complex studio measurements which makes no sense in this price class). Also skipping the XLR makes perfect sense as it really makes little sense to buy with this mic and one would only use if you already own it, in which case a SM7B plus cloudlifter for 200 bucks plus audio interface for at least 180 bucks would be the play.

USB micro was designed with expectation of cable breaking. That's why they have springs on the cable connector. Better to have broken cable, that broken socket. Thank you for this fantastic review Curtis! For those that are puzzling over Shure's decision to use micro USB - I think I may know why. Take a look at Shure's "MVI" audio interface and take note of the control panel and USB connectivity - it's nearly identical to what you see with the MV7. From what I can see the application used to enhance the MVI experience is the same as what comes with the MV7 as well.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd Жыл бұрын
So perhaps they saved some engineering effort by re-using the same panel?
@DeletedRedactedConfidential
@DeletedRedactedConfidential Жыл бұрын
@@curtisjudd This is definitely not my area of expertise so I likely have it all wrong. What I'm meaning to say is I wonder if the MV7 actually has the MVI interface built right in to it. I really like this mic (thanks in no small part to your very helpful review of it) but have gotten hung up on making the purchase due to the price and the Micro USB connection. I started researching XLR mic + USB interface options that have the features I'm interested in and ended up right back with Shure products - the MVI and the MV7X. That combination in my area at least costs more than the MV7. For me it seems that all paths end with the MV7! My original comment was perhaps just my attempt at determining why.

@AnthonyGoodley
@AnthonyGoodley 3 жыл бұрын
If you have a good enough XLR interface that can drive a Shure SM7B and you can afford it I don't really see much reason to consider the MV7. For most people any condenser mic like the MV7 is going to pick up way too much background noise and reverb. Unless you're house is quiet as a mouse and acoustically treated your much better off with a Dynamic mic imo, any dynamic mic. SM7B is one of the best ones out there, but may need a Cloudlifter to go with it possibly which adds another $150 to its $400 cost. A USB much would be good to take on the go with a laptop or if you're just starting out otherwise nah.

@@JStream From my exerience: No. In this case you are probably much better off with a P48 powered condenser, something like a KMS105. SM7B is not a cheap overall solution - it only shines when combined with higher end preamps. It will work in terms of gain, but the FetHead is not helping with overall sound quality / noise floor from my experience.

I noticed this in the samples of your and Emma's quotation samples. I inverted the sections of the MV7 that were "below the line" to "above the line" and the samples looked almost identical. To help prevent the popping, don't talk directly into front of the mic. Talk into it at around a 45-90 degree angle. It's mostly the air from your mouth hitting the diaphragm that's causing the popping and not the sound waves.

Two questions...hopefully you still get notifications for new comments on old posts 📫! 1. Are the magnetic connectors pretty reliable, so you could just leave the micro-USB in, using the universal magnetic connector for the cord...protecting both connections, the micro USB, and the port on the mic, from foreign materials, or bending? 2. Do you see much difference between podcast needs and voice-over needs? (I am intending to learn voiceover work, part time. )
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 жыл бұрын
1) The USB-micro port works with friction. You can leave the cable connected to keep the port protected from dust. 2) Often for voice over, VO artists will prefer condenser microphones in an acoustically treated space as the idea option. But if you're working in a space that isn't acoustically treated or doesn't sound great, a dynamic mic like the MV7 is probably a better choice because you work up close to the mic. This improves your signal to noise ratio so you pick up less of the reflected sound in the room.

Nice review, Curtis. Seems VERY sensitive to handling noise. Compared to the SM7b, it seems a little more hyped/boxy in the upper mids. SM7B has a smoother mid-scooped sound. Without the comparison though, I don't think I would've thought it was too much. Those app presets are pretty cool.

Is it possible to use both USB and XRL at the same time? For example, if you wanted to record to the computer via the USB, but then also record a backup track to a handheld recorder via XRL.

If you can afford the SM7B and an interface with enough gain to support it, why not go that direction? Then you'll never wonder. And if you hate it, you can surely sell it and recover most of the cost.
@1Patient

@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions I was looking at them today. $519 CDN plus 13% tax on top of that along with some type of booster, many people keep telling me the Cloudlifter, but I have found out there are more products out there that may or may not work better. Any thoughts on that Curtis? Thanks for the reply, by-the-way. I really enjoy your channel with the content you provide and the quality of the content is top shelf. Take care, have a nice day.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 жыл бұрын
Then the MV7 seems like a really good option. 🎙 I've used the Fethead which is similar to the Cloudlifter. It's pretty good. But if your recorder or interface supplies enough clean gain, you don't need one of those in-line microphone amplifiers.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Learner Forever, yes, -23 LUFS is the loudness standard for TV broadcast in the European Union. The reason I use it here is so that the loudness is at the same level as my other microphone reviews AND perhaps more importantly, to get the audio to that loudness, no other processing such as compression is necessary. I think it is really important for people to hear what a microphone sounds like without any processing so you know what you're getting into. Hope that makes sense!

Hi Curtis, nice video - Interesting about the RF interference. I have a new MV7 coupled with iPad Pro 2017 (10.5” w/lightning port) and works well. I was told by Shure that it’s not compatible with newer USB type C ipad pro’s (too bad). So I guess my upgrade path will be the MV7 with a MacBook Air or pro down the line.It’s a huge improvement from the Samson Go Mic that I started with. Shure ipad app was buggy, so I manage gain using the mic.

Fantastic review Curtis. One question...when using with XLR will the Shure 'save' it's settings after it's been unplugged from the app? I run a podcast and we have 4 Shures....but not 4 iphones or laptops! Therefore we record direct with XLR into a Zoom H6 recorder and use the limiter in that...then edit the sound in post on the computer. Many thanks for your reviews. You've helped me spend literally eye watering sums of money!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think it does because it would need a power source to do that. However, the effects are not that great. The limiter in the H6 is as good as the one in the MV7, which is not very good, so you're not losing anything there. The main things are the EQ and compression. Are you post processing your audio or streaming live?

when you record the samples, is there any treatment at all in the room? and maybe a stylus would work on the touch surface? also, the mic on a different table is a really good idea. you could probably do a whole course on video and audio for conference calls alone. im guessing its a big market, especially right now. just from observing one person who does 1 or 2 conferences a week, about an hour each...there are a lot of problems that come up with regard to audio and video, mostly audio. anyhow, thanks for another great video!

Hey, great videos. I discovered your channel recently and I must say, I love the way you present your videos. Always straight to the point, pros and cons of the products before you even talk about the mics. Also, very nice intros with motion titles. What plugins do they come from? Finally, on this particular video I have one comment based on what you say in your introduction. I fully understand you want to show (well, to have listen to) the raw audio of each mic, without post processing. Now that said, once we make our mind on a mic or another, I sometimes feel we may be left with unanswered questions. If I choose for the budget Mic amongst the ones you present in a video, and I clearly understand that the audio is not as good as the more expensive you may suggest (because its response is too bright, too warm, with too much ambient noise, or internal noise), I still wonder if I can accept the compromise by making corrections in post. A budget Mic can be acceptable with some post corrections and make the investments worth, I would imagine?. Again, when the choice is for a budget mic, especially for budget reasons, I would definitely need to know the result in audio quality coming out from post. For sake of a comparison, listening to the raw audio totally makes sens to me. But once I decide for one model, I need to know its capabilities, without and with post corrections. I wish you could complete your comparisons with samples of post corrected audio, that would be great. Anyway, thank you again for all your videos, I have learned way more by watching just your channel, rather than browsing too many different channels, with sometimes opposite or incomplete views.

Thanks Claude, the intro was custom created by a graphic artist. I'm not sure which app he used, but likely after effects. Thanks for the feedback. I struggle with keeping the videos short enough so that I don't get a lot of criticism for making them too long. I have another video showing how to EQ to sweeten the sound in post: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJ-ZmnVniLOpiLM as well as several others on the channel covering other post techniques. Note that some microphones are a bad enough fit for some voices, that recordings can end up with saturation or distortion that CANNOT be removed or fixed in post. This is pretty rare, but does happen. I'll try to include some samples in future reviews, balancing that with the need to stay concise.
