*The SM58 is slightly warmer sounding than the SM57 **do7.pl/SM58** which I also own. Once you've EQ'd each mic you'll find less difference between the two. Essentially you're given a wind screen with the 58 which isn't in the 57. This allows the 57 to have a brighter sound at the sacrifice of "pops" from air. In comparison to other mics in this price point there's no competition, this is an easy buy.*

great mics! For live use, I prefer the beta58. For studio use, I think sm58 is better.

Been using the 58 since the beginning of time... and, even then it was approximately the same price as it is a half-a-millenium down the road !! In coming upont the Beta 58 and comparing the two I was told that the SM58 is more for older analogue kind of recordings/sound/instruments (like acoustic-trio jazz with vocals, for example) and that the Beta58 was more for electronic (DJ) music. The Beta has an extra 6 DB output which will definitely, catapult the user into being the loudest background singer on stage, or also vocally being able to hold ground with the massive sounds of any performing DJ's set-up - as compared to the original 58 which blends in perfectly with a warmer, more 'old school' sound. However, I find the tone of the Beta to be more 'metallic' than the iconic SM58. Each one serves a purpose, but they are not exactly interchangable if you're expecting to get a similar audio presence within a specific musical genre. The Beta is not 'jazzy' at all... but, it IS louder and will cut through a wall of electronica, when called upon to do so.

ninjabluewings sennheisers even above this price range into the 200+ dollar range are made in Ireland. The german ones are beyond at least 400 dollar price range. Consider the results when you compare apples to oranges.

Curious about the Beta58 because I often got such good results with the SM58, which I use for home-recordings (which isn't that usual, probably), for that direct, live sound which a condensator mic sometimes doesn't give me. The only thing is that I have to use quite an extreme EQ setting to give it the clarity and expressiveness that's needed. Maybe the more expensive Beta58 doesn't need that, so it can be used with more subtle settings(?)

I actually like the Beta 58 sound better. It's crisper. It's brighter. I love bright mikes. I've heard the Beta 58A on a Zoom h5

Ok... These two mic's are on sale right now, all I want to know is, which one sounds better live and on recording and will last me forever?
@hankshepherd58346 жыл бұрын
Tom Laveign I can't believe nobody has posted a response in 5 years. Beta-58 is much clearer and more directional. You have to sing directly into it. The SM is rather forgiving and you can sing sideways into it. Both mics are built like tanks. They last forever. I have been using one of each wired version for 29 years.

If you're gonna talk about mic sensitivity patterns, you really need to learn what the terms "Cardioid" and "Super-Cardioid" actually mean. It's not hard, just google it and you'll see diagrams!

ehh AKG P5 ftw, and beta is way beter than the sm58, i personaly use AKG's P5 supercardioid and its only 55 bucks, I use sm58's at a theatre i work at and i hate them. waste of money, theyre all muddy, and the feedback like a sun of a bitch, its so hard to get control when you got the people prancin around the stage with a cardioid mic. hate em.
